Kamalendu Bhadra, TNN | Aug 20, 2013, 06.31 AM ISTFor a moment, Mukherjee thought someone was playing a prank. "Someone on the other end introduced himself as Aamir Khan and asked in a very sweet and modest voice if he could speak with me. I did not recognize the voice and said 'sorry, I can't place you'. He laughed and said he was 'Mumbai ka Amir Khan'. I was dumfounded," Mukherjee told TOI on Monday.
"I was thrilled to talk to him," said the schoolteacher who has been the face of the Kamduni protest. The rape-murder victim was his student and Mukherjee has been zealously fighting to get her killers convicted and free Kamduni of fear. He was part of the delegation that met the President on July 15.
Mukherjee has been showcaused by the government for taking part in a Kamduni rally after school hours and has also been targeted by a Trinamool Congress poster campaign but he is unfazed, like the women of the village who have also braved threats from goons.
The story of a small village taking on the might of the government caught the attention of Aamir Khan who decided to showcase it in his hugely popular and thought-provoking show Satyameva Jayate. A three-member crew from the serial visited the village on July 30 to film the episode. Mukherjee had sent a message to Aamir through the crew and the actor got back on Sunday.
The actor invited Mukherjee and four others to the Mumbai studio for the episode. The others could include the victim's brother and her friends Tumpa Koyal and Mousumi Koyal, who dared take on the CM and have braved threats by goons. They have already been interviewed for the episode.
