And then he kissed me..

"Jaldi karo,"shouted Rishabh, "if you are going to take so much time, we will reach way beyond the muharat.""Rishu bhaiya, just 5 minutes more," was the reply from Tina, Rishabh's teenager cousin. "Arey Rishu, if we reach there on time, no one will regard us as the baraati," said Rishabh's aunt, resplendent in a bright orange saree. Rishabh just rolled his eyes saying, "vanity thy name is woman." "Oye vilayitee, keep your vilayitipan to yourself, this is how it happens in India."

All these hustle-bustle was for the preparation of Karan's baraat, Rishabh's elder brother. Karan was getting married to Jeevika, the elder daughter of Shamsher and Padmini Malik. Everyone agreed this couple to be made in heaven, the moment they were seen together for the first time during Sangeet party. Karan's parents, Mohan and Radha Kundra were in the seventh heaven, as they had found the perfect match for their elder son Karan in Jeevika. Karan has always been the more responsible and obedient of the two. He joined his family business after completing his management studies.

Rishabh has always been the rebel, though the Kundras never complained about that. Rishabh had always been disinterested in the family business. He was among the nation's top rankers in his school final exams. He chose to go to UK to pursue reservoir engineering. The Kundras had never before heard of this branch of engineering, but they had full faith in him. As evident, Rishabh passed as the gold-medalist and bagged the most lucrative job offer in one of the world's largest oil and gas production company in UK. There also he outshone others with his performance and attitude and very soon climbed the managerial ladder. When this company decided to open a technology center in India, he was among the few chosen leaders who had the responsibility of setting up this center successfully. It was a double-bonus for Rishabh, a huge raise, and more importantly, getting back to his family.

But due to this relocation, he missed out the activities involving Karan's wedding preparation. No wonder, as it happened all of a sudden, within one month of receiving the rishta from the Maliks, the wedding day was finalized. Rishabh could barely make it to the mehendi and sangeet ceremonies before the wedding.

Anyone seeing Rishabh's restlessness today would think how anxious he was with the baraati's proceedings, but in reality, that stood second in his list of priorities. His main reason was none other than Madhu, the exquisitely beautiful younger sister of Jeevika. The first time he saw her at the sangeet party, his jaws dropped. He had been with many beautiful and charming girls before, but never had he seen such purity in one's visage. She had a divine aura around her beautiful form; added to it was mischief and sensibilities, a very rare combination. She danced around and enlivened the atmosphere in a matter of few minutes. Rishabh never believed in love at first sight, but this sangeet party had changed all his perceptions.

"Chal Rishu, itni der chilla chilla ke sabka dimag kharab kar raha tha, now what are you waiting for?" asked Radha. Rishu shook his head and tried to calm down his racing heart with the hope of seeing his angel soon again.

Maliks residence was full of people, everyone running around with one errand or other. Madhu entered the bride's room and announced, "the baraati has finally arrived!!" All this was happening so fast, that even for a pragmatic girl like Jeevika, this was quite nerve-wrecking. The Kundras were greeted with all rituals by the Maliks and the wedding proceeded.

Rishabh's eyes kept on looking for her and when he spotted her, the vision was enough to make him gasp aloud. Rishabh kept on following her at a distance and smiled at her childish antics. It was time for the saat pheres already, when Rishabh came to his brother at the mandap. Karan looked nervous. Rishabh asked, "what bro? Any problem?" "My shoes are missing, must be Madhu's mischief. Go get it from her." As if his brother sang the sweetest song in his ears, Rishabh gave him a smile of contentment and said, "don't worry bro, I'll get it back in no time." Everyone had come near the mandap by that time to witness the holy bonding and Rishabh soon spotted a giggling Madhu near him. He sneaked behind her and whispered near her ears in his huskiest tone, "give back the shoes, or else.." Madhu jumped at his words and startled to find him so close, but instantly hid her jolt and replied, "no money, no shoes honey!!" "Aahaan, now that you have made me your honey, return them quickly, or else.." "Else what?" "I'll kiss you in front of everyone." Madhu had never imagined anyone could threaten her that way. "Trust me Madhu, I am a shameless man." Rishabh gave her his naughtiest smirk.

The pheras were complete by then. Madhu hesitatingly asked Rishabh to follow her. The smirk on Rishabh's face grew into a suspicious frown when Madhu pulled him inside a room and animatedly started explaining how her cousins would kill her when they find about her betrayal. Rishabh was no way interested in the shoes, nor in her eminent trouble caused by himself, for that matter. He put his index finger on her lips. "Shhh..you talk too much." Madhu's eyes became bigger in comprehension of the situation and asked him, "what do you want?" "You almost killed me with your looks tonight and now asking me what I want!!" He closed in more towards her, his hot uneven breath could be felt by Madhu as much as her thumping heartbeat was audible to Rishabh. "Stop Rishabh, please," and after a pause of a fraction of a second, she blurted out, "I am engaged!!"

Radha had seen the gleam in her Rishu's eyes on the evening of Sangeet. Although both her children were equal to her in affection and motherliness, but Rishabh being younger has always gained more of his mother's concern. He was never demanding from his childhood, but once in a while when he would put forth his wishes, which were never unwarranted, Radha would try her best to get him his wish. She had never seen such adoration in his eyes for any of his friends of the opposite sex. Of late his ardor for his job had planted some anxiety in Radha's mind about his keenness to marriage. And after seeing Jeevika as the perfect blend of culture and modern thinking, she had no doubt about Maliks upbringing. Could she ask for more?

The wedding went perfectly alright. The guests were happy. Although a few whispers from the relatives about food, decoration and bride's jewelleries could be heard here and there (that is what relatives are for!!), the ceremony was concluded with a note of overall satisfaction. Before the vidai ritual, the two families and some close family friends sat together for dinner. Radha found this to be the most apt chance to make her proposal to her new samdhan. "Sab kuchh bahut achcha raha, hain na?" asked Radha. Padmini was prompt in her answer saying,"ha Radha ji, this happened all so fast, yet with such perfection. My daughter is blessed to have you as her in-laws." "No Padmini ji, she is now my daughter, a part of my family; we are equally blessed to have bonded with your family." Padmini could feel tears of joy in her eyes. Without anymore delay, Radha questioned Padmini, "are you thinking of Madhu's marriage next? I know it is too early to ask, but.." "Radha ji, her marriage is already fixed." It took some moment to digest the fact. "But you never mentioned that before when we were having marriage talks about Jeevika!" "Yes Radha ji, I apologize for that. Actually Madhu has been engaged to her childhood friend Mukund early this year. They had studied together from school and have been fast friends since then. When Mukund got a transfer to the US early this year, his mother came to us with this rishta and wanted this engagement to happen before he left for US. But that time we had nothing fixed for Jeevika, and fearing people would say we are getting our younger daughter married off before the elder one, we kept that a very secret occasion, just within the family. Now that Jeevika is well settled, Madhu's engagement will be announced." "So Madhu must be very happy with this rishta.." "To be frank, she did not say no and we thought who could be more suitable as a life partner than a friend, hai na?" Radha was not listening to her any more. She could foresee the pain in Rishu's eyes. Suddenly she felt frantic and wanted to know about Rishu's well being. "Excuse me Padmini ji, I need to remind Karan's papa about his medicine." "Sure Radha ji."

Rishabh was nowhere to be found. Radha could see the signs of omen. She hurried to Karan who was busy chatting with his friends. "Karan, where is Rishu?" "I don't know Ma. He came to give back my shoes and after that I have not seen him. Why Ma?" "Chachi, Rishu bhaiya went back with Bua. Said he was feeling tired." "And that spilled the beans. Radha knew why he must be feeling "tired" so soon. "Koi baat nahi beta, it's time for the vidai. We should hurry."

On their way back home, Radha and Mohan were coming in a separate car than the newly weds. "So did you speak to Padmini ji about Rishu and.." before he could complete, Radha stopped him and narrated the whole incident. Mohan Kundra's forehead furrowed in deep contemplation, as he was no stranger to his younger son's disposition.

Next morning the Kundra residence was shining with the brilliance of their new member. All the mausis and buas were nudging each other to have a sneak-peak of the bride and the groom's newfound proximity. Radha was busy showing her household to Jeevika and explaining her how she would have to take over as the 'badi bahu' of the family. After all the rituals were over, the relatives retired to their rooms and Karan called all his brothers and sisters to have a first time one-to-one interaction with their bhabi.

Rolls of laughter and jokes could be heard from the living area. Tina said, "bhabi, do not feel sad, now that you are away from your family. This place is nothing less than a circus. Karan bhaiya and Rishu bhaiya are two jockers who will always keep you entertained." "I will not feel sad, but will definitely miss my parents and sister. They are the ones who are feeling lonelier after my vidai." "But they should be getting used to this, as another round of wedding bells is just round the corner!!" said Rishabh. Although Jeevika could not detect the subtle caustic undertone, Karan immediately warned his brother silently not to divulge anymore. Rishabh realizing his mistake deviated into some stupid and embarrassing childhood memories (related to Karan off course) which turned both Karan and Jeevika beetroot red.

Two weeks had passed without much ado. Meanwhile Radha had a chat with both her sons about Rishabh's feeling for Madhu. It was an open and shut case, so anymore rambling on the same topic was prohibited further and Jeevika was to be kept completely unaware of this fact. Radha did not want her bahu to feel pressurized by this situation, as already she was giving her best to get accustomed to the Kundra household.

At the dinner table, Radha noticed that Jeevika was a bit withdrawn than before. "Beta, mummy-papa ka yaad aa raha he?" Jeevika by now had understood that her MIL was a very sensitive woman and there was no need to hide facts from her. "Ha mummy ji, 2 weeks I have not seen them." "Radha, now that everything is settled, why not invite Malik saab and his family for lunch this weekend?" suggested Mohan. Rishabh's spoon shook a little at the mention of Malik's family and immediately those words rang in his ears, "Stop Rishabh, please. I am engaged!!"

It was still a puzzle to Rishabh as to which was the main cause of his indignation on the wedding night; was it Madhu's refusal, her betrothal to another man or his own foolhardiness in baring his feelings to her unabashedly before knowing the truth? Anyway, he had to avoid that scene again. He started contemplating various plausible excuses he could put forth to be away from home that day.
