I am glad somebody wrote about this.

I dont think the Indian society has changed to such a big extent and the change has been more positive, with women getting more education and using it by working even after getting married. But there still exists in the Indian society oppression of women.
I always thought that soaps would be a good way to help women by empowering them with information to deal with oppression. As most of these soaps are watched by women, they can teach them the laws and let them know that they can get legal help to get out of the situation where there is abuse.
Instead, these soaps show women in such poop light, so weak, so vulnerable and abused, these soaps do not good.

Soaps can be a powerful tool if used well and ofcouse Ekta will never get it into her thick skull. I am sometimes amazed to see actors like Ram Kapoor who are experienced to act in such rolls that are demeening to all humans. They should let Ekta know that such a storyline will not be tolerated.

MAYBE if you had stayed behind, you could have been an example for some people at least. To make a difference starts within.

The soaps do things to get rating, it is not necessarily what goes on in the country, mind you some of it actually happens. However, I feel that India has advanced so much from the 50's and because of this advancement, along the way some morals and values were lost. It is still not as bad as some countries, but just the same people and things have changed. In the villages things are much simplier and better and there is alot of values still intact, but for the cities, I was amazed when I went back a few years ago and saw such a huge difference.

The ones who have values and morals have a strong foundation at home and so like the Lotus flower which grows in dirty water, still rise above and blooms so beautiful, they to can be in the environment but still live a respectable life

i live here...have been born and brought up in a city. As much as we say these serials influence us, the point is they are not supposed to!
also i dont agree with nina when she says most of this happens. IT DOES NOT. its mainly superficial and extreme wht they show on tv.
the values are intact though the society has become 'modern'
somewhere down the line people are becoming 2 extremes.
Either the respect and love for the country is there and in a huge capacity or people are so busy aping the west they have forgotten their roots...

il give a simple analogy which is known to be true to india now

the rich are becoming richer and the poor, poorer!!!

I do try and counsel people at least in my family and friends circle as much as I can. What I was refering in my response was that the medium of television is extremely powerful. Those who write for the soaps, those who direct them produce them and act in them, these "talented People" need to feel the power of the medium they work in. Generally speaking, people can distinguish between reality and television. You can see it in the forum, when the members get very upset with the storyline when it gets ridiculous. THe sensible ones know what reality is and will not do things the characters on serials do. But there are a lot of women are not perviledged with education or sense of worth, that do need some help.

Another thing that is worth mentioning is that most of the soaps have similar types of characters(villian) very similar type of storyline. It is very easy to get bored with them. My interest lasts for a few months only. You can so predict what will happen.

I feel some type of censorship has to be instituted as they do for movies to soaps also.
