The thing with Ratan is, she has never had to put herself in being Veera's mother and this is something she isnt comfortable with it, thats what she hasnt embraced that part of Veera, Ratan does accept Veera as part of the family but to give and accept her as a daughter is something Ratan hasnt managed to do... and this is what Veera constantly wants from Ratan, and Ratan knows she cant do what Veera wants, be the mother - when her heart isnt in it.
Sampooran leaving affected everything and tie in with Veera's arrival... hence not accepting Veera AS a daughter, this is the constant struggle we see coz Veera wants her as that...
Ratan doesnt treat Veera like an evil stepmother, like many others would
And the past 5 yrs, Ratan has just merely existed rather then living, its only recently ever since Nihal arrived and the search for Ranvi in Amritsar, we have seen Ratan get abit of colour in her face and life and then snatched away again with Sampooran's death etc...
Not only does she live with what Sampooran did, but also the guilt of him leaving, and what she said - even though it wasnt her fault, but she still blames herself etc
