Chapter 3
Adham Khan & Maham Anga
"Is this what we have come to?" Adham Khan barged into his mother's chamber angrily.
"What's wrong?" asked Maham Anga
"It's Jalal, Ammi. Look at his stupidity. He has left the kingdom of Amer and Bhaanpur for a woman! Not only that, now there will be a hindu temple and bhajans inside the palace? I will go and talk to Jalal about it. We can still take Amer. If he wants that girl, she is married to him now. What difference would it make?"
"STOP RIGHT THERE you unthinking fool! Have you no brain at all? How could you possibly even think of doing that?" yelled Maham Anga. She could never believe that she had given birth to such a fool.
"Give your tiny brain some rest. I will show Jodha her rightful place when the time is right."

Jodha & Ruqayya
All the women were curious and had gathered to catch a glimpse of the bride. Just as she was about to be shown her personal palace by her servants, Ruqayya stepped infront of her, blocking her way.
"A very warm welcome to the princess of Amer. Make sure she is well looked after." She ordered her servants.
"She is Jalal's most recent acquisition, after all. I'm sure he would want her in good condition and happy. All that sadness on her face doesn't look too good."
"I'm not some acquisition. I'm married to him, just like you are. Being Jalal's first wife you should have known that he has brought me with my consent, fulfilling my conditions or did he not tell you that? Clearly, you weren't enough for him. " retorted Jodha.
Her vanity wounded, Ruqayya was speechless. Jodha's words ringing true, she stood motionless as Jodha walked away.
"Never imagined Ruqayya could be at a loss of words." The women whispered. "This is a welcome change. Looks like her wits have left her too."
"You'll have to be careful." warned Shaheen, one of her maids as they walked. "You have insulted her infront of everyone. She isn't very forgiving."
"I was too harsh with her." Admitted Jodha "But she knew this was hard for me.. and don't worry Shaheen, Amer's Jodha isn't afraid of anyone and I knows how to handle such people."

Jalal & Abdul
Jalal carefully retrieved the payal from the jewellery box, reminiscing the first time he had seen her.
"Pardon me Shehenshah, but why do you still have this payal? She is yours now, probably waiting for you." asked Abdul no longer able to contain his inquisitiveness.
"You are right Abdul, its time I return it." His eyes still fixated on the payal, Jalal proceeded towards the harem as a perplexed Abdul watched him leave. "Ya Allah, he is getting more elusive by the minuet. What on earth has taken over him?"

Jodha, Jalal J & Hamida
Her palace was indeed grand. Bigger than the one she had at Amer. All other maids had left her alone as it was her first night. She didn't want them to leave but she could barely speak. What will happen now? With each passing second, her fear increased.
She heard someone walking towards her room. It must be him. What should I do? Without giving much thought, she hid behind the huge curtains in one of the chambers.
Where on earth is she? "Jodha?" he called out.
Jalal was slowly walking towards her hiding place. Realizing her stupidity, she jumped out of her hiding place and blurted "You will not touch me!"
"What makes you think I want to?" he scoffed. Although surprised at first, he was slightly amused at her behaviour.
"I believe this belongs to you." He said as he held out her payal infront of her.
The confusion on her face was momentary until she remembered the night she had seen Jalal for the first time.
"You have been.." she raced towards Jalal to snatch her payal from him. In her hurry, she slipped and fell right into Jalal's arms. Something in her stomach fluttered while her heart pounded as if it would jump out of her chest. Lost in each other's eyes for a moment, their gaze was suddenly broken with the realization that they weren't the only ones in the room.
Jalal let go of her, dropping her on the ground. "Apologies my dear princess, I'm not supposed to touch you."
Jodha's cheeks turned pink with embarrassment, she was now more annoyed at Jalal then ever.
"Stop torturing my daughter-in-law!" scolded Hamida.
"But Ammi Jaan, all I have done is fulfilled your dear daughter-in-law's wishes. Your accusation really hurt me."
Jalal was thoroughly enjoying this. Hamida gently picked her up and asked Jalal to leave.
"Let me look at you." She said. "You are indeed the jewel of Hindustan. Masha Allah! I have never seen a girl so beautiful." Jodha smiled at her mother-in –law and looked down shyly. Hamida could see the sadness concealed behind her smile, hidden in her pretty face.
"I have something for you." With that, Hamida presented Jodha with a beautiful idol of Radha-Krishna.
"Thank you Mallika." Jodha was touched by her genuineness. Something she had never expected from Jalal's mother. "I'm like your mother Jodha, call me Ammi."
Jodha's eyes welled with tears. All her feelings that she had been holding inside for so long came to surface. Hamida pulled her closer and hugged her. Even in her vulnerability, she somehow felt Jodha exuding immense strength. At that very moment, she knew Jodha was the one.
"I understand what you're going through. Jalal is not as horrible as he seems. His heart has only known darkness. I hope you give him some time."

Maham Anga had somehow convinced Jalal to send Adham at Malwa but was anxious. She knew how her son could be an indulgent, impulsive fool. She was hoping winning the war would increase his chances marrying Jalal's sister.
The news of the victory at Malwa had reached Jalal, along with a few elephants without a detailed report of the war. Jalal immediately recognised his impertinence and was enraged at his foster brother's behaviour.
Let him face the consequence. Any kind of sedition will not be tolerated. With that thought, Jalal decided to personally march to Sarangpur to teach him a lesson.
Maham Anga, realizing that she had to do something to control the situation, sent her personal messenger to warn Adham.
