CHAPTER 23

"You love to annoy Arnav right?" Khushi asked, as they walked out of the Vicar's office. The Church compound was empty except for the two of them, strolling under the huge Mango trees sheltering on either sides.

Ranvijay shrugged his shoulders, pretending to be oblivious to what she was talking, but when Khushi glared at him with a I-know-what-you-are-doing look, he was forced to smile sheepishly at her.

"And you annoyingly love him right?" Ranvijay shot back cleverly, while Khushi halted in her steps to look at him. For a second, she simply stared at him and then, looked away at the doves eating bread crumbs strewn by one of the kids who had attended Church.

"He makes me happy." Khushi finally replied, still looking away from him, while Ranvijay chuckled back, "Oh, he makes me happy too." He replied as quick as a sly fox, and she had no other choice than to laugh at his words.

"Ranvijay, can I ask you something?"

"Shoot."

"Have you ever loved someone so much that you would do anything for them? Anything to make them happy?" Now it was Ranvijay's turn to be silenced by her question.

"Define 'anything'." He asked, his eyes for the first time, lost in deep thoughts.

"I don't know, sacrificing your happiness for theirs?" She answered, looking down on the ground.

"Khushi, if you love someone, I'm sure they wouldn't want you to sacrifice anything for them." Ranvijay replied, reaching out to hold her hand. "And if they still expect you to, then they aren't worthy of your love."

"But what if it is the right thing to do?" Khushi continued, now resuming their walk, still holding on to his hand.

"Nothing is right or wrong in life. These rules, cultures, traditions and images were created by some jobless people who had nothing else to do in life." He chuckled, squeezing her hand tightly. "You should do what your heart tells you to. After all, we have only one life to live."

And as Khushi raised her eyes off the ground, all she could see was her life standing right in front of her, leaning on the iron gates of the compound with a little smile, a bit towards the grumpier side greeting her.

"Oh ho! Look who is still here. Bad boy, not listening to your grandma!" Ranvijay's voice broke her reverie, while Arnav's smile turned into a scowl.

"Arnav, you are still here?" Khushi asked surprised, the excitement simply betraying in her voice. It had been nearly an hour at the Vicar's office, discussing the Nuptial ceremony's arrangement and she couldn't believe that Arnav had been waiting for her all this while at the gate instead of going home with his family.

Suddenly she felt her cheeks glow warm as he pushed himself off the gate and walked right towards her, not even bothering that Ranvijay was standing right next to them.

"Go home buddy. My sister must be waiting for you." Arnav said without even the slightest hesitation, not taking his eyes off her, even for a second and all they heard was Ranvijay chuckle, finally leaving the two to themselves. "And you may take the car. We can manage without it, can't we?"

And she didn't realise when her throat had felt dry, all of a sudden, finding it too hard to string together mere words.

Before she realised what was happening to her, her back was firmly pressed against the wall and the loveliest pair of warm molten brown eyes were staring right into her, his breath fanning her face. Unable to bear his strong gaze, she shut her eyes tightly, her heart beating rapidly through her chest, so much so that even in the cool weather, she could feel sweat trickling down her back.

"Someone will see us." Was all that she whispered, while his lips started tracing a path over her creamy face.

"Who? People? They've all gone home. And the only one left is God. But hasn't God himself told us to love thy neighbours? Technically, you are my neighbour and I'm sure he won't mind me loving you." He sniggered, while her eyes immediately snapped open, a laugh escaping her own lips.

"I still can't believe that you waited for me." Khushi replied, trying to push him off her, but in the process, she only ended up, entangling herself in his arms.

"Kukku'" he whispered, only for her to hear, in an endearment specially and exclusively reserved for her. And in return, when her fingers reflexively clutched his shirt, he couldn't stop his heart from simply melting in sheer and pure love for her. "You waited for me for fifteen years. How could I have not waited for you for a mere hour?"

He was rewarded with hazel eyes, gazing right into his soul with an indescribable expression, as if searching for answers within him.

Innocent eyes'

He noted, as pure as the flakes of the first snow of the season, as warm as the embers of the burnt out coal. And he knew, he wanted to spend the rest of his life, with the owner of those eyes, in that one gaze.

"We have lived apart for too long. Now, I won't let you get away from me easily." Arnav firmly pulled her hips against his, loving the way she was getting affected by their intimacy.

"So does that mean you are planning to spend the rest of your life, pinning me against this wall?" Khushi smiled, her cheeks clearly crimson, but she was not the one who easily accepted defeat.

"Oh Kukku, you are too naive. You have no idea about the things I would want us to do." He groaned, as he brushed his lips against her ears, and slowly moved away, to find her staring at him in sheer shock at the suggestive meaning of his words.

When she still stood rooted to the ground, he reached out to hold her hand comfortingly, and pulled her along, and together, they began on a slow stroll towards the meadows on the far end.

"What? Kukku, we are two grown ups now. Not just ten year olds Annyav and Kukku." He finally broached the topic, letting her know of his intentions, so that she knew where exactly their relationship stood.

"I know you are a girl and well, girls love to act all bashful and shy, but Kukku, itna bhi na sharmaao ki gulaab bhi sharmaaye tumhare gaalon ke rang se." Arnav laughed at his own corny dialogue, speaking in his highly anglicised Hindi, trying to cheer her up, pulling her hand towards his mouth, while he delicately showered her knuckles with soft intermittent kisses.

But for some reason unknown to him, Khushi continued to remain silent.

"Kukku?" he called out her name in worry, trying to break her silence, but instead only found her little finger reaching out to entwine his own, and this one gesture was enough to convey what words couldn't.

They continued to walk in silence, basking in the comforts of each other, just like that, without a care of the world around them.

Like free birds in an open sky.

As they walked by, they saw a bunch of kids, racing each other on their bicycles, their laughter echoing the entire valley, managing to infuse their enthusiasm to the two grown ups who were still kids at heart.

And that one scene was enough to break the ice for Khushi as she enthusiastically turned towards Arnav with a huge smile on her face. "Arnav, remember?" she asked excitedly, while he was all smiles for her.

"I remember everything Kukku, I remember every single thing about us." Arnav replied, immediately encasing her shoulder, pulling her towards him.

It had been the first day of a long summer vacation and the Raizada kids had decided to take out their newly gifted bicycles and go for a ride down the Camel's Back road. It had been a brilliant way for them to spend their time, except for one problem.

While little Arnav and Anjali had a bicycle each, little Khushi was unfortunately left out of their fun. And she would stand in one corner and watch them silently, smiling for her friends, feeling happy for them, inspite of her little heart yearning desperately to be part of the fun.

Until one day, little Arnav had finally realised what was missing in the picture and had approached her stealthily, nearly frightening her, catching her red handed in her silent act.

"You want to ride?" He had asked, holding out his bicycle for her and being the bashful kid that she was, she had simply shook her head.

"Annyav, I don't know to ride a cycle." Little Khushi had explained innocently, laughing at his impossible suggestion.

"Am I your best friend, Kukku?" The nine year old Arnav had asked, crossing his hands, glaring at her with narrowed eyes.

"Annyav, you are the only friend I have apart from Anjali." She had honestly replied, wondering why he was questioning her friendship.

"Then, come with me." He had reached out to hold her hand and before she knew it, he had pulled her towards the bicycle, lifting his legs to sit on it and when finally seated, he had patted on the bar in front of his seat, gesturing her to sit on it.

And when she had still hesitated, he had lifted her holding her shoulders and made her sit on the bar, trapping her effectively between his arms.

"Annyav, I'm going to fall!" the scared Khushi had shrieked out in horror realising what she was doing, only to be silenced by Arnav, as he had guided her hand over his neck, so that she could hold him for support.

"Kukku, I will never let you fall." He had reassured her and together, they had started on their journey that ran all the way down to the valley, and soon, the entire Mussoorie echoed only the laughter of these two kids, as they cycled down the slopes, carefree and happy, without a worry in the world.

As if the world consisted of only him and her.

And no one else.

"Arnav! What are you doing?" Khushi screamed out in utter shock, snapping back to the present as she saw him running towards a man riding a cycle and talking something to him. And within seconds, her question was answered as Arnav borrowed the bicycle, sitting on it and peddled towards her with a sheepish smile on his face.

"Want to go for a ride?" He asked cheekily, cocking his eyebrow, while she laughed at him as if he had gone bonkers. However, when he didn't laugh along with her, she knew that he was serious.

That he wasn't going to accept a 'No' for an answer.

"You're crazy!" she huffed, chiding away his offer and tried walking away from him. But from the corner of her eyes, she could see him riding beside her and before she realised it, he had caught hold of her arm and yanked it, sending her crashing onto him.

"Ah, I see, you've become stubborn." Arnav replied, bending down to peck her already reddened nose, which turned crimson as she flushed with embarrassment. "Well then. I'm no less stubborn either."

And without any warning, he pulled her on his lap, her shrieks of protest dying down her throat as she soon found herself reaching out to hold his neck, burying her face on his chest, just like the old times, only this time, she became acutely aware of how close she was towards her grown up best friend.

A full grown man.

And someone, who made her stomach flutter erratically these days, at such close proximity.

All she could feel was the wind slowly whipping her hair as the wheels began picking up the speed. Her forearms turned icy cold, only to find warmth from his body to soothe her.

"You're mad." Khushi punched his chest lightly, moving apart a bit to gaze at his face. Instead, she only found the warmest pair of molten brown eyes, bending forward to silence her lips.

"And you're the reason for my insanity." He whispered, against her lips, causing her to instantly avert her face from him.

She tried really hard to focus on the deodar trees whizzing past them, but her mind was only concentrated at the havoc his lips were creating on her neck where they rested. And when she tried to close her eyes and focus on anything else to divert her mind, his intoxicating after shave began to fill her nostrils.

She didn't realise when his slight five O'clock stubble had slowly started rubbing against her cheek, teasingly pricking her face. Nor was she aware when he had completely moulded himself onto her, leaving nothing untouched between them.

All that she knew was that she felt happy, excited and never alive like this before.

"Hold on tight." He whispered and she didn't even have to see to know what would come ahead.

The great 100 metre steep road down the valley and nothing else was heard except for the loud screams of two grown up kids, as their lungs were suddenly filled with an enormous rush of air, while the cycle plunged into the steep depth within seconds.

Her eyes were suddenly wet and burning. Was it because of the adrenaline rush or were they tears of joy? She didn't know. She didn't want to know either.

And when he finally halted the bicycle, all that she knew was that she was holding on to him and sobbing uncontrollably.

"Aye. What happened, Kukku?" Arnav held onto her tightly, patting her shoulder, but she only responded by hugging him even more fiercely than before, immensely surprising him. "Since when did you start getting scared, eh?"

"I'm not scared." She managed to mumble, amidst the tears. But when she tried explaining more, her feelings didn't materialise into words.

"Khushi, you know that if you cry, you make me sad too. So do you want me to feel sad?" He asked, as if he was talking to a little kid and in reply, she simply shook her head.

"I'm not crying. The wind just made my eyes water." Khushi lied blatantly.

"Yeah, right. Liar." Arnav smirked at her, and in no time, his lips found hers as he hungrily devoured her. He didn't know why he felt such a desperate need. Even the salty tears on the corner of her lips weren't enough to put him off. Instead, it was an urgency, a desperation to prove to her what she meant to him, to cast away all doubts from her mind regarding his love for her.

And when they finally broke apart, exhausted, the sight of her swollen lips made him smile at her, as he caressed the edges tenderly with his thumb.

"Want to have some coffee at that shop on Mall road?" He suddenly asked, taking her quite aback by her question.

And Khushi could only stare at him in awe at his suggestion. Her best friend did remember everything about them, the realisation dawned upon her.

That she was the wrong one who had assumed that he had forgotten everything about them.

"Yes." Was all that she said in reply, reaching out to hold his arms, steadying herself, as she prepared for another ride on the bicycle, her heart elated with happiness and only lots and lots of happiness.

Was that a hop, a skip or a gleeful jump? She didn't know, but it was different than all other days. Or rather nights, because she never went to her best friend's bedroom at night, to wish him a goodnight, before heading back to her cottage.

But today, she did, her heart suddenly overwhelmed with a strong urge to imprint his face in her mind as she lay down for the night.

She had spent the best day of her life with the one whom her heart revered the most. What else could she probably ask in her life?

Standing outside the huge oak doors, she raised her hand to knock on it, but for some reason, she withdrew her hand, instead reaching out to turn the knob, like she had every right to enter his room.

Instead, when she suddenly stepped into the room, she heard a loud 'Whoa!' nearly scaring her out of her wits. Her eyes immediately went to just a boxer clad Arnav standing in the middle of the room, gazing at her with quite a surprised look on his face at her stealthy intrusion.

"I'm sorry. I should have knocked." Khushi instantly murmured, and turned around to leave the room. However, before she could reach the door, his hand blocked the door.

"No, it's alright. It's just that I wasn't expecting you." He replied, stealthily locking the door behind him, so that no one else could intrude them.

"I just came to wish you a goodnight." Khushi meekly replied, still looking away from his nearly bare body.

"Oh!" he drawled, moving her face to meet her eyes. He noticed how her eyes scanned over his naked torso momentarily, before she forced herself to look away and the fuzzy feeling inside him, returned back all over again. "So'. Goodnight." Arnav moved away, crossing his arms over his chest and looked at her with an amused face, wondering what her reaction would be.

"Goodnighttt' " Khushi stammered awkwardly and turning around, she was about to open the door when she suddenly realised that it was locked.

Her face turned around to face him in confusion, nearly making him chuckle with amusement at her state. "What?" He asked innocently, as if he was unaware of what her question was.

"No' nothing. The door is locked." Khushi replied even more confused, and tried to unlock it by twisting the knob. However, before she could complete it, she found Arnav's palm, holding her dainty one, stopping her mid way.

"Just a goodnight?" His voice fanned her ears, and instantly found herself pinned against the door by his body.

"What more do you want?" Khushi asked, looking away from his face, impressing him with her confidence and brave face, inspite of clearly being nervous at that moment.

"You never told me how you found spending the day with me today." Arnav whined, pulling himself from her, only to hold her hands and lead her to his huge four poster bed.

"I really enjoyed it Arnav." She replied and he could see the honesty in her eyes and words. After all, even he had enjoyed the coffee with her in the Mall road and the walk all the way back to their house. Yes, it was a tiresome journey. But somehow, the journey hadn't been that exhausting in her cheerful companionship.

Suddenly, he remembered something he had wanted to give it to her for a long time. The diamond earrings he had purchased in DehraDun for her. Somehow, the moment seemed perfect for him to give it to her.

As he walked towards the drawer where he had carefully stored them, he could feel her curious gaze following him. Picking up the velvet box, he walked back to the bed where she was seated.

"Ok, close your eyes." He ordered only to hear her protest out loudly with a loud "Why?"

"Sshh'" his finger immediately found her lips and silenced her, leaving her no other choice than to obey him. And after making sure that she had indeed shut her eyes, he proceeded to delicately remove the jhumkas from her ears.

Her lips quivered as her cheeks brushed against his palm while he started hooking the diamond earrings on her ears. He noticed how her breath suddenly turned shallow at their close proximity, along with his own. Using all his efforts, he tried to sanely execute this one mammoth task and when he was finally done, his lips didn't fail to chastely kiss her each earlobe.

Her eyes slowly opened in surprise at the loss of contact between their two faces and it took her a whole minute to realise what had happened between them in that two minutes, before her fingers immediately rushed to touch her new earrings.

And as quick as the lightening, she was up and rushed to the mirror to get a look of her new gift.

"Arnav, are these diamond earrings?" She shrieked out in horror, unable to believe her eyes.

"Nope." Arnav shook his head, walking towards her and standing right behind.

"Liar. I cannot accept them." Khushi refused, her hands automatically reaching out to remove them. But his hands held her firmly, preventing her from doing so.

"Haww' You don't believe me? I swear I found them at a shop in Lal chowk, for three hundred rupees only." Arnav lied, enjoying the myriad of expressions flitting over her face, hearing this information, her eyes finally narrowing at him suspiciously.

"You can pay me three hundred rupees. I know you don't like taking presents from anyone." Arnav instantly suggested, confusing her even more.

"But, they look like the ones I had seen at the jewellers." Khushi wasn't convinced with his answer.

"Are you crazy? Why would I spend my fortune on diamonds for you!" Arnav laughed it off, hoping she would buy it, but instantly regretted saying it, as he observed her face fall flat at his remark.

"Oh' yeah." Khushi instantly looked away, and murmured. "Thank you, I'll pay for it tomorrow. Is that ok?" she asked in a low voice, turning back to face him. But this time, he was sure he saw signs of hard controlled tears threatening to spill from her eyes at any moment.

Arnav didn't know what to do. If he told her the truth, she would still refuse to accept them and when he had told her the lie, she was indeed heart broken.

Sigh! Women and their complicated feelings!

"No, it's not ok. I need my payment now itself." He replied stubbornly, only to find a tear finally tracing it's path down her cheek.

"I really don't have money with me right now." She replied innocently, and her innocence simply melted his heart, while he reached out to hug her.

"Kukku, silly girl! I don't need any money from you ok? Can't your best friend gift you something just like that?" he asked, tucking the loose strands of hair behind her ears, admiring how perfectly the solitaire adorned her.

Khushi was silent for a while, until she finally looked up and whispered the sweetest "Thank you," to him, reaching out to kiss his cheek.

He didn't know what it was about that one 'Thank you', but the fact that he had managed to bring a little bit of happiness in her life simply burst open the floodgates of his feelings that he was restricting within him all these days.

And her lips which were supposed to meet his cheek, met his own lips, his muscular arms instantly reaching out to her waist to raise her up on her toes, as he kissed her senselessly until exhaustion, like a madman on a quest to regain his sanity.

And the next thing that he knew was that they were toppled over the bed, as he hovered over her, refusing to part away from her lips.

He kissed the little mole on her collarbone. He kissed the swells that followed below. He kissed her till he was out of breath and his brain refused to function.

The following seconds simply blurred away in a haze as his hands reached out to pull down the zipper of her dress. One tug was all it needed, as he pulled away the kameez from her body. And then , he was all over her as he began ravishing her in ways directed only by his primal instincts and nothing else.

Her fingers crazily wound into his hair while his lips traced down to her navel, as he treaded on a dangerous path of marking her as his own for eternity. His mind forgot all rationality, as his hands tugged the cords of vestiges of her clothes. Only one thought roamed in his insane mind.

That he had to have her at any cost, otherwise, the insatiable thirst burning within him would combust him into ashes.

But then, as rapidly as the fire had ignited within him, the flames were doused by water, as he suddenly noticed her petrified eyes staring right into his soul.

Haunting, dead, vulnerable eyes.

Eyes so terrified, eyes of a person right before his death.

And that was enough to shake his entire core and bring him back to senses, as he was suddenly transported to the incident fifteen years ago, that had changed the lives of two innocent kids.

His Khushi, his Kukku, his best friend was gazing at him with the same petrified eyes that she had gazed that monster on that fateful day. And the chill that ran down his spine accompanied with this thought was enough to put a full stop to whatever his insanity was making him do.

And instantly, he felt shame flood into him, as he saw his best friend, lying half naked in a vulnerable state in front of him, unable to even to speak a word of refusal against him.

"Kukku'" he sighed, reaching out to cup her face and it was only then, that she finally blinked her eyes, at the touch of his warm fingers on her face. And without saying any other word, he pulled her up from her laid down position and taking the kameez, he pulled it down her dishevelled state, covering her up.

"I'm sorry. I guess we are not ready for this yet." He said, as he rested his forehead on hers, enveloping her in a hug. She didn't move, nor did she say a word. Only after entire five minutes had passed, he felt a slight tug on his shoulder.

"It's late. Your Buaji must be waiting for you. Come, I'll walk you home." He explained, getting up, pulling the zipper of her dress.

She didn't refuse, nor accept. It was just complete silence from her side. But as they walked out of the room, when her little finger entwined with his own, her feelings were finally conveyed.

As they walked through the dark night towards her cottage, he desperately tried to engage in some conversation with her, only to fail miserably at every attempt.

And when they finally reached the doorstep, he pulled her for one last hug. "Hey, no worries ok? Everything is fine between us. You don't have to feel awkward or embarrassed at what just happened in my room. Sometimes, things like this just happen. Goodnight, Kukku." He kissed her reassuringly one last time, and watched her silently walk into her house, nodding her head.

Sighing, he retreated back to his house, hoping that all would indeed be well tomorrow.

o0o

It was a new day, a chance for new beginning and Arnav woke up with enthusiasm, looking forward for another day to spend with Khushi. He smiled sheepishly, remembering all the times they had spent together, especially the previous night.

But then, as he remembered the details, he realised that it was time he had the much needed 'talk' with her and tried to remove the fear from her mind. Honestly, he had no clue how he was to proceed with it, but the image of petrified Khushi staring at him, as if he was that monster, sent chills down his spine all over again, aching his heart.

So putting on his slippers, he rushed to the bathroom to get ready and when he was done, he rushed downstairs to grab breakfast, knowing that Khushi would also be present there. Maybe after the breakfast, he would get the opportunity to talk to her, he realised, his mind already planning on how to start the much dreaded conversation with her.

He was still busy thinking about it, as he climbed down the stairs, when suddenly, he heard Mami's voice boom towards him, halting him midway.

"Chottey, look who is here."

And he felt blood drain his face while his heart completely stopped with a loud thud as he saw the sight of a smiling Lavanya, his girlfriend whose existence he had conveniently forgotten rush towards him and kiss him.

"Baby, I missed you so much."

And all he could see ahead of him was Dadi's angry, disappointed and anguished face at the sight in front of her.

CHAPTER 24

Apologies if you didn't like the update or found the standard of writing not up to the mark, but this is what happens when I write a chapter bits by bits everyday. Like I said earlier, I'm super busy with hardly any time to breathe. So the delays will continue for the next few months.

Thank you for patiently waiting.

Hola

I was really happy to see you finally updated 😛
The update was nice.

You showed a new side of Ranvijay. Till now you showed him lika a happy go lucky, hilarious and naughty guy. But today he was so much practical and down to earth. Like a philosophe !
Really loved his interpretation of love and sacrifice.

It's always great to read Arnav and Khushi's part. It's so relieving !

"Who? People? They've all gone home. And the only one left is God. But hasn't God himself told us to love thy neighbours? Technically, you are my neighbour and I'm sure he won't mind me loving you."

That completely cracked me up !!
And I've realized only today, that Arnav is suh a funny guy when he's with his Kukku 😉

Arnav and Khushi get more and more intimate, and it was obvious that Arnav won't control himself for a long time but I'm very much happy that he did realize that Khushi wasn't enough comfortable.

Overall I enjoyed the update but I'm sad to see that Khushi didn't really accept the earrings : she should realize that Arnav bought them for her and it would hurt him if she refuses. It's sad to see that Arnav need to lie to make her accept them.

Hope Dadi gives Arnav her piece of mind because even if Lavanya is a 🤬 what he's doing isn't right !

q : Was Arnav's boxer yellow ? 😳😆 (really couldn't prevent myself from asking ^^")
