Panditji did not reply immediately,not knowing how much Prithvi should be told and how much should be hidden from him..
He doesn't know about his mother,does he?!Panditji thought again...
"Why are you asking this beta?"Asked Panditji in a tense voice.
"I'm asking because I want to know..I have to know..It's necessary for me..Because I came to this village to break the curse..!"Prithvi's quiet voice rang in the haweli..As Panditji sat staring at him,with a shocked look.
He came to break the curse?!Thought a shocked Panditji.
"I'm waiting Panditji."Prithvi said impatiently..."Please tell me about this curse..?I need to get over this.."Prithvi said in a grim voice'
"The curse never gets over...It just brought deaths..It just brought pain and separation to all involved..And it gives on bringing death and pain..."Panditji muttered distractedly looking away from Prithvi.
"Nevertheless I want to know everything about it..It's mandatory that I do..I only have a few days in my hand Panditji.."Prithvi was getting really impatient now,which was not his ususal character..He wanted to get on with all the unpleasantness of the curse,and all that needed to be done to break it..He did not have time to wait..And the more he would wait,the more he would be pulled towards his temptation..
A pair of brown doe like eyes flashed in his mind along with soft pouty rosy lips..
Stop it Prithvi!He scolded himself..Those are forbidden waters!Don't go there!Prithvi thought to himself.And with a sigh turned to look at Panditji,who seemed to be lost somewhere.
"Panditji?"Prithvi called out softly.
"It had happened many many years ago.."Panditji started relating still looking away from Prithvi.."No one knows the specific time..But it was during your great great grandfather's time..The village of Baragaon ad been prospering very well..It was one of the village festival time..When it had happened.."Panditji turned to see if Prithvi was listening..
"Please continue Panditji..I'm listening.."Prithvi said with a nod at him asking him to continue..
Letting out a long sigh,and once again looking away,Panditji continued with his narration..
"It was another festival time..And as usual the village of Baragaon was busy in celebrating their success of another year of good harvest and cultivation..The usual festivities had been arranged by the two leading families of Baragaon-the Khannas and the Thakurs.."Again Panditji turned to look at Prithvi,and again Prithvi asked him to continue with a nod of his head..
"The usual festivities had been arranged..The village fair,with all the trimmings..A circus team had come..People from distant places had come to attend the fair..Games were arranged,with dollshows and merry go rounds and lots of entertainment..The whole village was buzzing with entertainment..The Thakurs and Khannas were family friends who were also getting ready for the usual competitions..It was a trend of Baragaon at those times,that the two leading families had a friendly competition of hunting..It was the most looked forward part of the village celebrations.."Panditji stopped for a moment,and then went on with his story..
"The eldest son of the Khanna family,Jaideep Khanna,and the eldest son of the Thakur family Ranvijay Singh,got ready to compete in the hunting expedition..As usual the villagers were all very excited about it..But on that fateful day.."Again Panditji stopped,and turned towards Prithvi.
"Please go on,Panditji?Why did you stop?"Asked Prithvi impatiently.
Panditji turned away,and went on with his story..
"That fateful day instead of killing the deer,both the Khanna and Thakur were chasing..A young boy of 5 years old was killed..His mother had been nearby looking for food for his hungry son,when she came running hearing the gunshots..But she was too late..Her 5 years old son was already lying dead..His small body,lying lifeless in a pool of blood,while both Jaideep Khanna and Ranvijay Singh stood shocked still on their horseback,on which they were hunting..The woman was a widow who had been drifting by the village,and had taken shelter in the forest for sometime..The enraged mother,weeping mother looked on at the two hunters with guns in their hands..None of the two were sure,whose gun shot had killed the innocent kid.."Panditji let out a long sigh,and continued..
"The villagers,some of them,who were the audiences of the hunt watched on ,as the heartwrenchingly weeping mother gave her curse on the village of Baragaon..She said as she looked at her hand which were red with her dying son's blood..THE VILLAGE OF BARAGAON WILL NOT SEE ANY HAPPINESS ANYMORE!AND YOU TWO!YOUR FAMILY WILL BE COVERED IN DEATH AND BLOODSHED IN ALL THE COMING GENERATIONS!AND BARAGAON WILL SUFFER FROM BAD HARVEST,AND ONE FAMILY AMONG YOU VILLAGERS WILL MOURN YOUR FAVOURITE CHILD'S DEATH EVERY YEAR!With this curse she left weeping with her dead child in her arms,and was never seen again..And till now the curse has taken many lives..."Panditji finished with a long sigh,and turned back to Prithvi..
Prithvi ofcourse did not believe that the deaths were really related with the curse,but knew it would be futile arguing with these superstitious people..So he went on to asking,the next most vital question..
"How can this curse be broken?"Prithvi asked in a calm voice..
Panditji looked at Prithvi with a startled look.As if he had not expected Prithvi to ask this question so fast..
"Breaking the curse..?To break the curse you-"
"PRITHVI BETA!KANHAIYA HAS A VERY HIGH FEVER!PLEASE COME AND HAVE A LOOK?"Panditji was interrupted by an agitated Ramu Kaka..
Quickly Prithvi walked with Ramu kaka,into the room that was prepared for the little orphan boy Kanhaiya,leaving Panditji sitting in the hallroom...
It was night by the time Prithvi had settled the little boy for the night,with medicines,and a check up by the village doctor.Panditji had left,soon after Ramu Kaka's interruption,as Prithvi got no time to talk to him anymore,due to getting busy with Kanhaiya.
Prithvi stood staring at the dark night sky,as thunderlights flashed the sky open..It was one rain filled season,with thunderstorms almost every night..
Prithvi turned to retire for the night,when he heard a muffled scream.Quickly he turned to scan the darkened premises with his eyes,when he saw two struggling figures,at a corner close to his window..
Without further ado Prithvi quickly jumped out through the window,not wanting to be late,by going to unlock the door..Stealthily he walked towards the struggling figures,who were standing on the left side to his window...
He could not even make out what was happening in the dark night,when the thunder flashed,and for a fraction of a second,he saw the familiar profile of a beautiful face,which had gone white with fear,and her mouth was closed by a man's hand!
Prithvi's blood started boiling in anger,when the thunder flashed again,and this time he saw,that she was struggling to be free of the man's grasp,while the man had a sharp glinting knife held at her throat!
Prithvi's blood ran cold in fear!Another flash of thunderlight,and he saw the guy,press the knife into her throat!
"One more sound or movement,and I'll slit your throat open,right now!"The man sneered out...
