It started with an SMS. Late on Saturday night after an awards event, Kangana sent me a message which expressed great emotional vulnerability in spite of her just having won an award. "Will I be able to live up to expectations?" she seemed to wonder. I've never seen Kangana being anything but super-confident. I've seen her go through much stress on account of her sister's shocking injury. And then one day she just broke down. I was taken aback. Somehow emotional vulnerability in stars is always suspect. Are they faking it?
But nothing prepares you for an actor's complete emotional collapse. Hence when a few years ago Kareena suddenly broke down after I accused her of doing faltu roles I was speechless. I learnt my lesson.
A question that I'm often asked by star-gazers is, do stars keep acting all the time. "When Shahid marries Kareena, will he do the pheras the way he did them in Vivah?" Hmmm. Must ask Shahid how filmi he intends to get in real life. From what I know of him he's down-to-earth and rooted.
I've often seen stars with their defences down, and know that they bleed emotionally. I've seen the very brave face Jaya Bachchan kept up at the hospital when her husband was taken ill. The only time she broke down was when her father-figure Hrishikesh Mukherjee passed away. In other instances you wonder if the stars deserve the privacy they demand. When Ravi Kissen, involved with an actress, gave an interview saying she was never going to replace his wife, the actress was hysterical. "He has promised marriage. How can he talk like this? I've my reputation to guard. I've my parents to be answerable to. He'll have to marry me." Stars are prone to be extremely silly in love.
Such encounters make you wary of stars' emotions. But that is a tragic mistake. I've seen Kamal Haasan and Raakhee Gulzar on the verge of an emotional collapse for reasons ranging from loneliness to heartbreak. I've seen Viveik Oberoi's ex-girlfriend (now happily married) waiting at home for him when he had already moved. Then I've seen Oberoi going through the same experience later.
And then I've seen the ultimate dream girl, Hema Malini, admit in a vulnerable moment that she was lonely. And then I knew. Stars aren't acting all the time. They are often acting to hide
their real feelings.
