Thunderlight lighted the sky again,and the dark shadow with the raised knife stealthily approached Prithvi from behind...
"Sorry?What did you say Mr. Shukla?I did not hear you.."Prithvi walked further into the darkened corner of the haweli,unaware that he was inviting more trouble by doing so..
The man was just behind him now,his sharp knife again glinted as thunder lighted the dark night sky,and the man slowly raised his knife higher,ready to strike his target..
"PRITHVI BETA!!!QUICKLY COME INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!"Called out Ramu kaka,and Prithvi turned instantly,but the man was quicker,and hid in the dark bushes,unnoticed by Prithvi..
"Ok..I'll talk to you later about this..Ok..Bye.."Saying this Prithvi disconnected the line,and quickly walked back into the haweli,as the first drops of rain started falling..
"Where is Kanhaiya?Did he eat?"Prithvi asked as he sat at the dining table..
"He ate,and is sleeping now.."Replied Ramu kaka as he started serving him his dinner..
"Beta,don't walk alone in the dark..It's not safe.."Said the concerned old man,as he served Prithvi the food.
"Why kaka?Are there murderers hiding behind bushes?Don't worry so much,kaka.."Prithvi reassured the old man with a smile..
"You should be careful beta,you should always be careful..You never know what,what miight happen..."Muttered the old man,as he walked away to bring in more rotis from kitchen,as Prithvi watched him retreating with a thoughtful frown..
Meera was lost in confusing thoughts as she tried to sleep,cuddling her teddy..She recalled Jeevan Lal's words...
"Dost!Prithvi is such an awesome guy!He saved Kanhaiya today,and that fat Moti Lal was scared to death today!You know he just doen't have a car like those heroes!HE IS A REAL HERO!"Jeevan Lal had announced in a satisfied voice as they had sat by the pond together.
What is he really?!Meera thought to herself,chewing on her bottom lip...
He saves my dad,he saves Kanhaiya.He also saves me from breaking my bones..And then..And then he kisses me!!!Meera thought,coloring up..
Is he the good guy?!Or the bad guy?!!Meera thought in confusion as sleep engulfed her senses slowly..But her last memory before going to sleep was a flash of Prithvi's aroused handsome face as he lowered his lips to kiss her,and Meera cuddled her teddy tighter and let out a soft sigh,as she went into oblivion...
"Thank God!Everything went well with the puja!"Said Sudha to Ramdhari Singh,who was sitting on the bed,as she got ready to change her clothes.
Sudha noticed,after a quick peek at her husband,that he was lost in thought with a grim expression on his face...
I've to break the wall you've created around your heart to prevent Prithvi from getting in..But in your heart you know,that you already care for him,Ram,and I'll make you face the truth.Sudha decided with determination.
"That boy,Prithvi is such a treasure!"Sudha said forcefully,and spared another look at her husband,who still was not reacting,and sat with the same grim expression.
Letting out a slow sigh,Sudha turned back to the dressing table mirror,and went on with removing her earings,as she continued with her one sided conversation..
"Prithvi truly reminds me of Pramila didi, a lot.And he also has a bit of Rajeev bhaisaab in him.."Sudha's face was turned away from Ramdhari,so she did not see the shadow of pain that passed through Ramdhari's face,at the mention of Rajeev Khanna.
"That is one fine boy,that Prithvi,I tell you..You'll like him Ram..."Sudha had turned to face Ramdhari,while saying the last part softly..But Ramdhari's only reaction was clenching his jaw tightly in anger..So Sudha let out a long sigh and went into the bathroom to change,without continuing the topic anymore.
Prithvi is staying..There will be time enough to break the wall slowly that Ram has built around his heart for so long...Was Sudha's last thought..
Sudha finally left the room quietly,to look into her household duties,and so she did not see Ramdhari getting up to open an iron safe at the corner of the room.
Ramdhari Singh took out an old fragile looking diary from the safe,and taking it back to his bed,he carefully opened it.The yellowed pages,clearly indicating that the diary was more than twenty years old.Ramdhari carefully turned the pages,clearly looking for something in particular...
Finally he stopped at one page,that stated:
15th May,1984...
Today,is the happiest day of my life!Pramila bhabi gave birth to a handsome son..MY GOD SON Prithvi Khanna is born today!This is the greatest happiness I ever had,and I already plan to keep Prithvi with me at most times,and make him just like me,even though ,I know,my best friend Rajeev will kill me if he knows of my plan!
An involunatary chuckle escaped Ramdhari's lips,as he read his writings of 27 years ago..Then as if of its own accord,his hand moved to the back of the diary,and from a small pocket at its back,he took out an old picture...
The picture showed an young Ramdhari laughing together with another handsome young man,looking at the camera.Gently Ramdhari caressed the face of the young man with him...
"Rajeev.."He murmured in a choked voice as a tear fell from his eyes...
Prithvi sat rocking on the rocking chair of his room,lost in his thoughts,still in the white kurta and pajama,he had dressed in for the puja..
It'd been a chaotic day at the haweli today,with the puja rituals and all..And he thanked God again,for giving him someone loving and caring in the form of Sudha Kaki,who helped the puja ritual go smoothly without interruptions or problems.And then the bhoj arranged for all the pandits,had gone on well and without a hitch too..
The only hitch or awkward situation had arised,when Prithvi had been walking Sudha kaki to the door,when she was finally leaving,after taking care of everything..
"Oh!I almost forgot to ask!Prithvi beta,is your back alright now?It's not troubling you anymore,is it?"
Sudha asked a confused looking Prithvi.
"Back..?"Prithvi mumbled frowning in confusion.
"Yes..Yesterday,you said you'd back ache,and so you could not-"Sudha was interrupted by Prithvi.
"Oh!That!Yes!It's gone..I'm..I'm fine now..Thank you for asking kaki.."Prithvi replied coloring in embarrassment,at yesterday's embarrassing situation..But then the nice lady had left with a smiling acceptance..
Yesterday's episode suddenly reminded him of his encounter with Meera again,and that in turn reminded him of his vow to stay away from her and also his reason for being in Baragaon in the first place,and then he remembered the notice the lawyers had sent today..It was regarding that document and letter again..The document and letter that had brought him to Baragaon...
"I've to read that last letter again.."Prithvi murmured to himself,letting out a long sigh...All ready to face his destiny...He had to open the pandora's box again...
