Chapter 59: Truths and Lies
He felt her body tense and before she could give words to the resistance that was always beneath the surface, he spoke, "I did some research into this thing – this astrology thing that you have. You wouldn't believe it, so I know I will have to show your proof, but it turns out that I too have this manglik thing on my horoscope."
He waited for her to speak, but she remained utterly still in his arms. He gave her a few moments before he said, softly. "This means one thing evidently. Being equally cursed actually has a way of cancelling each other out. Just imagine, we were actually destined to be together, even in bad fortune."
He attempted a laugh, but she suddenly turned around in his arms, her face contorted into a mask of rage.
"You're a liar!" she said, pushing at his chest.
Before he could reach for her, she had climbed off the bed and had fled to the door that led to the balcony.
She fiddled with the lock in anger for a moment, the lock that he had the key to, before slamming it against the door and yelling, "Open this damn door, Arnav! I can't breathe in here!"
He hadn't known how she would react to his news, but it was Kashi. He should have known she would fly off the handle.
"Open it!" she screamed now and suddenly he was angry too.
"I will marry you, Kashi, and if I have to f**king curse myself with your stupid superstition to do it, I will, so be damned!"
"You're a stupid fool then and I don't marry stupid fools!"
"You'll evidently only marry men you want to kill!" he yelled back as he watched her turn towards the door leading out of the bedroom into the hallway.
He fought the urge to go after her and drag her back to him. She would resist, and this time she would mean it. He had to make her see reason another way.
"I saw her." He said suddenly and saw her stop just as she unbolted the door.
She waited a pause before she asked, "Saw who?"
He waited just the same length before he answered, now quietly, recalling those moments that misty morning when he had looked up towards the upper story windows of Kalarikkal house.
"The woman from our dreams." He replied, gave another pause, and then added slowly, almost apprehensive to invoke the name.
"Devaki."
He could hear the almost inaudible draw of her breath before her hands lowered from the unbolted door. She made no move to open it now.
There was a long silence when she leaned her head against the door.
"No one has ever seen her before, Arnav. Only Lakshmi. Not ever Devaki." She said finally.
He had figured that. He didn't know its significance, however. In fact, he had tried actively not to think about seeing the woman at all, although he knew the more he resisted consciously, the more his subconsciousness fought him, threatened to regurgitate the entire incident nightly.
"You don't know that. It doesn't appear that anyone knows what Devaki looks like, seeing as how she lived 150 or so years ago. So, even if anyone did see her, they would not have known."
It was an explanation that seemed reasonable enough to him, although he knew intuitively that it rang false.
"What is your tie to my family? Why has all this happened to you?" she asked on a tremuluous sigh, turning around finally and leaning back against the door.
He knew it was a question that she had long wanted to ask. A question that he had been afraid to voice up until now.
He had no answers for her. He wasn't sure that he wanted to delve into those questions himself.
"You're mine. That's why this has all happened to me. Kalarikkal House will not surrender its most precious gem without expecting something in return."
She raised her eyes to him then and he saw unshed tears brimming their edges.
"I will go mad if I lose you." She said with a shocking candidness that made him want to claw and rip out whatever intangible villain that lay between them.
Instead, he found himself walking over to take her in his arms.
Whatever part of him that had not thawed before her melted now when she yielded and softened into him, her fear and grief making her seek solace against his chest.
"Then you know just how I feel." He whispered as he gathered her into him.
