TOI: Why telly actors opt for regional films-ST/KV

Many television actors have bridged the great divide between big and small screens. But with a dearth of exciting offers in B-Town, some of them are trying their luck in regional films. And it has worked in their favour too. Popular telly actors have tasted success in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Malayalam, Marathi and Bhojpuri films. TOI takes a look at actors who feel that regional film market has great potential and is giving them their due.

Surveen Chawla
Telly show: Kahiin To Hoga
Acted in a Kannada movie Paramesha Panwala. Also starred in some Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi films

Karanvir Bohra
Telly Show: Just Mohabbat, Dil Se Di Dua...Saubhagyavati Bhava
Acting and producing Punjabi film: Love you Soniye
Since Karanvir owns a production house, he felt it made sense to capitalise on the growing Punjabi film market.

Barkha Bisht

Acted in Bengali films Dui Prithbi and Ami Shubhash Bolchi.

Manasi Parekh Gohil
Telly Show: India Calling, Gulaal
Tamil film: Leelai
Manasi denies that she did the film because she wasn't getting any interesting offers from television or Bollywood.

Acted in Kannada film Jogi and became a popular star in Kannada films.

Punjabi film: Saam Lavange Aape
While Vikram Bhatt's 1920 London is yet to start shooting, Vishal Karwal is trying his luck in a Punjabi film. He feels it is just another way to reach out to more people.

Karan Kundra

Karan has a hit film Pure Punjabi to his credit. In addition, he has also acted in Jatt Romantic and yet-to-release Mere Yaar Kaminey. Further, Karan has a three-film deal with filmmaker Vikram Bhatt.

Why the shift?
Require more challenges and don't want to continue doing cliche roles on TV

Bollywood films take longer to start and projects sometimes don't happen

Regional film market is less competitive than Bollywood

Opens up other avenues like endorsements and apperances at local events in smaller towns

Better than inconsequential offers in B-Town

Many regional films have viewers overseas as well

I love Punjabi films these days... the industry is definitely growing a lot! regional films are finally getting their due which is good!
