CHAPTER 9

Maan's mind was stuck in a trance. All he could think about was, what he could do with Geet. After so much of debating, he concluded that he would just try to taint her image in front of her husband. And this one time alone with him would be sufficient for it. But that question that followed in his mind was- could he really do this to her?

He had always seen her as a fragile porcelain doll, and he hated to admit, but even now he felt the same, even after her betrayal. There had been moments- the memory of which burnt him now for his naivety - when he's seen her hiding behind her mother, looking uncomfortable, meeting new people.

That was 1st time he'd seen her, Geet Handa. Her father was working under his dad and hence the entire Handa family was invited for the party at his mansion. They were a part of the family and Geet was dad's favourite- he would call her his daughter.

Maan and Geet had always met formally at the beginning, but as time passed, the formality paved the steps for friendship which passed onto to liking and blossomed as love. But none of them had the courage to own up.

They met everyday, but only as friends. Maan spoke to her of things he'd never told another soul. He shared with her the experiences of emotional isolations which he felt of never getting the live of his mother. Each day Maan became more and more consumed by Geet Handa. More and more entranced with her delicate beauty which was driving him senseless with growing desire. Yet he always maintained his distance, even when she would hug him to comfort him.

The depth of the sensual and sexual tension building between them tipped over on that day- the day his dad died.

When Maan arrived at the party to find Geet waiting, he didn't speak, nor did she. In a trance they had started walking towards the beautifully lights-lit lawns of the mansion. The air quivered and vibrated with the awareness around them, and she was in his arms before he'd streched them out to pull her into them.

His mouth was on hers and she was clutching him as if she was drowning. They had finally shared their 1st kiss. But it did not last long as they were soon interrupted by Madhu Handa. And then she was taken away...

**********

The evening had finally arrived and as promised, Maan had sent a car to pick Geet up. She was dressed in a white long gown. Though being inappropriate in size, it still made no hindrance in making her look heavenly.

Entering his living room, Geet tried not to let Maan Singh Khurana see how affected she was by watching him walk towards her. He still had some spell over her, which was constantly trying to push her toward him. He smiled, playfully, as if ensuring her that he would not eat her up. But she didn't trust his urban charm, even for a second. Or perhaps she did.

His eyes were like shards of ice and she shivered imperceptibly." Why did you invite me here?" She asked as he stepped closer to her.

Quick as a shot he spoke. "You look...beautiful."

Geet flushed. Of all the things he could have said, he uttered this. She was sure he was up to something, seeing his pleasant side. But what?

Ignoring the fear she felt and Maan's constant glaring, she started walking towards a silent, dimly lit living room, full of luxuriously stuffed couched and rosewood furniture, making her way to get seated on one of them.

Suddenly she felt hot breath on her nape and a hand sliding through her waist. Her breast thumped hard in her chest as she realized his touch and presence behind her. Seeing Maan up so close, like this had affected her more deeply than she liked to admit. Her legs suddenly felt weak, and she found herself loosing her balance.

Maan sensed this change in a body and held her more tightly. He did not want to admit, but holding her up so close was madding, it was making him forget his real motive. He called up every shred of self- control and smiled. But it was brittle.

Not leaving Geet's waist, Maan guided her towards the garden, which was beautifully lit by lights and at the centre a round table and two chairs were placed, with candles flickering and leading to a seductive atmosphere. He made her sit on one of the chair and spoke in best fake-caring way he could. "You should take care of yourself, specially in such condition." His jaw was gritted of being reminded of her pregnancy.

Geet looked up at him confusingly. Firstly she was irritated with her heart and body responding in a total opposite way she wanted it to- boiling hot at his touch. Secondly, his out-of-subject comments which were driving her mad.

The food and the wine was served and the two started eating, stealing secret glances of eachother. Maan watched as candlelight played over Geet's skin, casting her skin into mysterious shadows. Her cheekbones stood out. Her lips looked ripe and full. The white cloth on her chest, made her assets look beautiful. He was transfixed by her natural beauty and innate earthly sexiness. But all of a sudden those thoughts broke as the image of her with Kabeer in the same bed crossed his mind.

Maan's mouth quickered." So what have you told your husband, whom are you meeting?" he smiled, mischievously. " I'm sure you've not told him that you're meeting me." he asked playfully, feeling confident about what she would answer.

But much upto his suprise, she looked up at him, with an expression Maan couldn't understand. "Is this some kind of joke?"

Maan was innocence personified. " Why would it be a joke?"

Geet was vibrating with tension now. " You're saying I'm married? Who told you that? You are testing my patience Maan." She put down her spoon and stood up.

Maan's hand snaked out and caught her wrist. " Sit down. Please." She looked at him and tried to pull her wrist out of his grip. He smiled ruefully. " I think i have the wrong information?"

Geet pulled her wrist free finally but didn't sit down. She looked at Maan with the most haughty expression. " Of course you do."

Man frowned. This information changed everything. " So you're not married to Kabeer." He spoke, but mostly to himself. A smile crossed his face. This time it was a genuine one. He felt happy and relaxed.

"No." Snapped Geet. " Kabeer is my good friend." Seeing his facial expression which looked calm, she added. " I think the one who gave you the information, did not do his homework properly and provided you with the wrong name. Kabeer is married to Misha and they are soon expecting their 1st child." Speaking about the couple brought a smile to her face.

Then Maan's comment, ' You should take care of yourself, specially in such condition' played through her mind and she sat down abruptly and started laughing.

Maan's eyes were focused on her face. He was horror struck by this new development. He felt guilty about his earlier thoughts to destroy her image, but seeing her laugh, he couldn't help himself from smiling and asking. " What happened?"

"You thought i was pregnant." It was more of a statement than a question. " Do i even look like one." And she again bursted out laughing. Maan nodded a no weakly but soon started laughing with her. It was after a very long time the two were laughing together. They were so lost into eachother that for some time they forget the bitter memories.

Maan inclined his head and thought of asking her about those messages. "So what did you do these years and why are you here now?" Probably this was the best way to start a serious conversation, Maan thought.

Geet smiled. " After working for you, i had to leave abruptly for some urgent work." She was in no way going to admit that she was broken when Sasha had reveilled Maan's cruel intensions.

"I went to Pune and there met Kabeer and Misha. I don't know whether or not you remember Misha. She was my school friend, but due to her father's transfer they shifted to Pune." She looked at Maan, trying to get through his emmotions, cause it was after a very ling time they were discussing past, and that too without any complications. He was busy thinking something, but she couldn't deciphers what.

The name Misha triggered some images in Maan's mind of a young gorl, crop- short hai, slim and beautiful in her own way. She was a tom-boy then. And this was something unexpected that she was married now. Maan smiled.

Getting a green signell by Maan's smile Geet continued. " There i worked in an orphanage which Kabeer is running and i also helped him in his business in the finance department, untill..." she stopped. Suddenly it struck her that according yo Kabeer, Maan was responsible for that game plot which led to his business downfall. But now, sitting here she did not want to believe it. Whatever he wanted to do with her was out of revenge. Revenge for a big loss in his life. He might hate her, but could never do wrong with otjers. This much she knew about him. He was always the kind-caring-helping one.

Carefully Maan asked. "Until?"

Geet wanted to refuse, to tell him its nothing, but she herself wanted to know if Maan was anyhow responsible for it. "Until you payed money to the union leader of his company to go on strike. The strike took a violent turn and the infrastructure, the machines were all badly damaged." Her mouth tighten. She did not want to elaborate the scene cause she knew, being in business he would understand such things prerty well.

Maan's face was expressionless. He knew he was not a part of any of such things. Of couse he was interested in that land, but never intended to get hold of it in such a manner. It was against his principles. " What about those messages?" He asked, not caring about what Geet thought at the moment.

His sudden question about those messages was enough for Geet to confirm that Maan had no clue about the entire thing. She smiled. It was an assurance to her tgat it was the same old Maan. No matter how ruthless and heartless people called him, he was none of those. " Due to the damage Kabeer suffered a huge loss. And at the same time pressure was put on him from your side to sell off his land to your company. He was reluctant, and then those messages stating that if he doesn't, things would turn out fatal." She spoke.

Maan's hands tighten into a fist. " Geet you've got to believe me, i never sent those." He uttered the same in low pleading voice. For dome reason dod not want to taint his image in her eyes. " I think i know who it is, but would confirm it for myself." He was very furious now, over Sasha. How could she take such a drastic step, without informing him. He had to look into that matter soon.

"I know."

Maan looked at Geet's face, not believing what he'd just heard. Her face had a smile on it. It was a relief to know that she believed him, inspite of the not)-so-good things going on between them. " But since it was done by somebody from my company, I'm equally responsible." His principles mattered a lot to him. " Tell me, what can i do to help you guys?"

Geet felt greatfull but shook her head. " I don't think Kabeer would take your help. He's a self-made man Maan and for him his pride is the top most priority."

Maan was furious at Kabeer's name. He was jealous of him cause she spoke so high about Kabeer. Friend or not, Maan did not like that guy, specially since he'd touched Geet. They didn't seem like friends the way he'd toughed her with such authority. Ok, he was Misha's husband, but that did not give him the license to touch Geet. And the way he was trusting her with his business, Geet being here with him, when Misha was not, all this way no way normal. Right? What if their relationship was more than just friends? Even Kabeer had said in the party that Geet was important to him. These questions and thought and thoughts flooded Maan's mind.

Somebody had rightly said ' Jealousy is the biggest evil in human life.'

" Its good we have sorted out many things. I think i should leave now, its getting late. Thank you so much for the lovely dinner." Geet wanted to leave as soon as possible. The confirmation about Maan not being involved in the entire incident had made Geet's heart flutter with happiness. Her heart was going somer-salts in her chest. The entire time she was fighting not to let Maan see how he was affecting her. Without thinking much, Geet got up from the chair and started moving, only to be stopped by a hand on her wrist. Her heart jumped at his touch. Oh not again! She thought.

Maan flushed as he pulled her towards him, facing her, their bodies almost touching. Uncomfortably, looking into her eyes he spoke, " Why is Kabeer so generous with you Geet? Its more to you two that you're reveilling, right? You like him?" he said bitterly. He went cold for a second before he spoke." Or perhaps you seduced your way to let your living and his generosity?" He had never behaved with a woman like this. But no other woman pushed his buttons like this one did. The problem was that Kabeer and Geet sharing some secret relationship was turning the senses in his mind up side down.

For a moment it looked like Geet wouldn't answer. But then she did. Her voice was syiff. She shook with impotent rage. " That's right Maan. I seduced him into giving me a living. I'm that good in bed, that he's so generous to me." Shr crossed her hands over her chest.

His eyes narrowed on her. Driven by the wave of ambiguous anger, Maan spoke." You did not." It was only a statement to himself.

Geet just stood silent. So this was how he rated her. He thought her to be so cheap. " YES I DID." She spoke again, but with more force this time, making her each word herd correctly. If this was what Maan thought about her and wanted to hear, then this was what she was going to say. And saying so she turned to leave, feeling rage and humiliation.

"Not so soon, Handa. We have unfinished business-" Maan pulled her back, harshly. He smiled, and it was the smile of a predator. Before Geet could have even registered his act and properly taken his words, his head descended and his hard mouth pressed against her. For a second Geet had no reaction except numb shock. And then the sensation exploded in her body- hot and urgent.

Desperately she tried to cling onto reality and not let that hot urgency take over her need to stay immobile and unresponsive. But the overpowering urge took away her rationale thinking. Her hands clung onto his biceps, her whole body arched into his...

Their tongues dwelled needly, in a hoy swirl. And then abruptly Maan put her away from him with both hands. " I got my answer. You were right." He spoke bitterly. " Get out of here, Geet." He shouted.

Geet looked up, shocked, hurt and bewildered. She saw blood on his lips. She had bitten him. He was just trying yo satisfy his need and thinking and that's why he'd kissed her. She turned and without looking back, ran out of the mansion, with heavy eyes.

Chapter 10

"So all this is true?"

"Maan...I...I only did that because you wanted the land." Sasha spoke. Fear of being caught was clearly visible on her. She was clueless as to how Maan got to know about this and what was the need to be angry when he wanted that land. He was getting it, then why think her method to do it as wrong.

"It's SIR, Ms. Dutta. Don't forget that." Maan shouted. " I never gave you the right to do things on my behalf. You just need to do what I say. As i say. Don't put your stupid brain in something i've not asked you to. Do you get it?"

There was silence in the room, complete silence. It was the first time Maan had scolded anybody. He had always been intelligent enough to get his work done and hence there was never a need to shout on his employees. But as they say- there is always a first time, and this was that time.

"DO YOU GET IT OR NOT?" Maan tone got higher on finding no response from Sasha.

Frozen with shock, she just nodded.

"The Rathode's are suffering from a very bad time." Maan's voice turning to a more calmer side, upon thinking about their condition. " I want you to get me the entire information about their how n where abouts, by this afternoon." He waited for his mind to relax before he continued. " Though they would never take our help, i would still like to do whatever i can for them. But don't let this thing out." Maan closed his eyes and spoke. " Now go!"

No matter how much rage was filled inside him for Kabeer, due to some obvious reasons, he had to do his best to support that guy and his family, including Geet. It was his company responsible for the illegal downfall of his business.

Maan opened his eyes and glanced around his room. Sasha was about to open the door when his voice stopped her. " I'm sorry for shouting. But don't repeat such things Sasha. If i'll ever find anything against you, ever...i'll make you pay. Now go." The cold voice was enough for her to understand the depth of threat.

************

Maan sat in his office chair. His thoughts occupied by the incident of previous night. He was frustrated with his mind. On one level he remembered the way she'd kissed him back, biting his lip in her ardour. And on the other he couldn't fathom how he'd just let Geet go.

Kissing Geet had reminded him vividly of loosing himself to her again. When they had met 5 years ago, he had trust her with pathetic ease. Only to reveal in the end how she'd really felt about seducing him.

Something very private and vulnerable in him had been destroyed that day. He'd become hardened. Impenetrable. No one since then had managed to challenge his cynicism. The way she'd kissed him back, for once he'd thought that the kiss was pure, only for him. But then he realized he was again spilling and sliding to her. And probably that was what she wanted.

No he would not let her play with him again. This time he would have her- but on his terms. If she did not mind the closure with Kabeer , just to gain her living, she wouldn't mind the same with Maan. And this time, for Maan it would only be physical satisfaction. Nothing else.
**************

A couple of days later Geet was sitting in the hotel room, looking at the pictures of Misha and Kabeer in the hospital room. She smiled absent mindedly cause her thoughts were focused upon the letter in which Kabeer had informed her about a man being interested to support them during their hardships. He wanted to be the fifty percent partner in the Rathode business, only till the time they were incapable to stand on their own foot. The only problem with this offer was that the person refused to disclose his name. Since Kabeer was not sure about this deal and man, he'd asked Geet to visit todays gathering at the Oberoi Trident and to convince Jeh Khurana to invest his money in their company.

Geet wondered who could that person be and what were his real motives to help these unknown? Her heart was badly leading her to one name only, knowing he would be happy to help them without any gain, but her mind prevented her from moving in that direction.

Maan was nothing but a heartless monster for her now. She still felt cold when she remembered the way he'd aborted their kiss and pushed her from him, the other night. She hated Maan Singh Khurana for thinking so low about her and using her for his own desire.

Geet couldn't understand the reason that after knowing the way he'd humiliated her, her body was still craving for his touch. Her heart was thumping and she felt disgusted to even think about him after so much. She wanted all this to end soon now, so that she could return back to her children in the orphanage. They being her only family.

Geet was aware that Maan would be present in the party too, so she decided not to show him any weakness.
************

Maan didn't like the sense of anticipation firing up his blood. This fizzy expectancy. He realized it was all because he knew she would come here today, but could not see her anywhere.

Just then he spotted a familiar face in the crowd, the face he'd been looking for and he smiled warmly, welcoming the distraction that would put a full-stop to his lingering thoughts.

Geet cursed the dress, though it did fot her well but mercilessly was too reveiling. It was one of Misha's dress, which she'd sent for Geet. Navy blue, it fell to the floor, with ling sleeves and a high neck...but a long slit, exposing her one leg, much more above the knee. She'd cursed after she's discovered it in a package With the letter; when she would return back to Pune, Misha was in big trouble.

At present Geet just hoped that nobody would notice it. But her hopes were shattered cause then she saw Maan across the room, looking at her. She hated the awful feeling of excitement that danced along her veins at seeing him again. God! Please take this feeling away. I should hate him. She pleaded to the almighty.

And then, to her horror, he started walking towards her, closer. Geet had never felt so alone or exposed. She should have never come knowing he would be here too...he'd take any opportunity to humiliate her.

"Geet..." Maan came closer to her, smiled and out if ni where planted a kiss on her cheek. " I knew you would be tempted to come here...to meet someone."

Geet's voice wouldn't work for a long moment to reply back. Lately Maan was surprising her a lot with his actions. But still somehow she hadn't expected this kind of behaviour from him, specially after their last meeting.

Geet flushed and tried to ignore the warm feeling of his lips which still lingered on her cheek. She decided to say the truth and leave his presence as soon as possible. " What other choice do i have? I have to meet somebody for Kabeer, so please excuse me. " And she took the opportunity to flee the ensuring crush, grateful that she didn't feel a strong hand on her arm.

Now she had every intention of talking to Jeh Khurana as possible and staying away from one person in particular
