Top 10 Movies Based on Real Life Women Characters

Finally B-town actresses are breaking the Bollywood stereotype. No more sati-savitri, damsel-in-distress or koi-mujhe-bachao roles for them. Kudos to the directors who are making heroine-oriented films, that thankfully don't involve running around trees! With Vidya Balan portraying the role of South Indian siren Silk Smitha in soon-to-be released The Dirty Picture, we take a look at other actresses who're all set to play powerful characters based on real women.

Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives! This month iDiva celebrates Women's Month and we are more excited than feature ordinary women who've done extraordinary things! These are women who've gone the extra mile to do something out of the box whether in their businesses, workplaces (breaking stereotypes) or even promoting causes through innovative methods. Read their stories and other interesting features all of March on iDiva.com!

Actor: Mahie Gill
Real woman: Maria Susairaj
Ram Gopal Varma, who is making a film on the sensational Neeraj Grover murder case, has signed none other than the talented Dev D actress Mahie Gill to play the role of the accused Maria Susairaj. The movie tells the story of struggling actress Maria who along with her naval officer lover, murdered Neeraj, chopped his body into pieces, and tried to dispose it off by burning. That's not the appalling part. What's shocking is Ram Gopal Varma is going to call this movie Not A Love Story… like it's not obvious!

Actor: Madhuri Dixit
Real woman: Indira Gandhi.
A biographical movie based on Indira Gandhi should have been made a long long time ago. Anyway better late than never.
Director Krishna Shah plans to make Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story in two languages, Hindi and English. Since the canvas of her life is too big to be contained in one film, he'll be making it in two parts. According to him Madhuri was the perfect choice for she oozes the charm and tenacity required for the role.

P.S: Helen Mirren will reportedly reprise her role as British monarch Queen Elizabeth II in the English version of this movie.

Actor: Katrina Kaif
Real woman: Sonia Gandhi
Katrina won several awards for her role in Prakash Jha's political thriller Raajneeti. And why shouldn't she? Playing the role based on Congress President Sonia Gandhi was no easy task.
P.S: Reportedly even Italian actress Monica Belluci is going to play the role of Sonia Gandhi in Jagmohan Mundhra 's next project based on Rasheed Kidwai's book Sonia - A Biography.

Actor: Kainaz Motivala
Real woman: Deepika
22-year-old Delhi girl Deepika was the inspiration behind the Pawan Kripalani's horror film Ragini MMS. The movie's main plot might have been ripped-off from the Hollywood movie Paranormal Activity, but the MMS scandal happened for real and Deepika was the girl who had faced it.

Actor: Vidya Balan / Rani Mukerji
Real woman: Sabrina Lall and Barkha Dutt respectively
Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, No One Killed Jessica revolved around Jessica Lall's murder case. While Vidya's role was based on Sabrina Lall (Jessica's sister), Rani's character was inspired by NDTV's Barkha Dutt.

Actor: Aishwarya Rai
Real woman: Marilyn Monroe
Madhur Bhandarkar can hardly wait to give a desi take on the life of Marilyn, who is the epitome of Hollywood glamour. While his first choice for Heroine was glam doll Kareena Kapoor, he has now settled for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Apparently, Madhur read a lot and watched every documentary based on her life and approached Aishwarya only after he was sure that he could translate every aspect of his research into a story.

P.S: American actress Mira Sorvino played Marilyn in the movie Norma Jean & Marilyn and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role.

Actor: Divya Dutta
Real woman: Shivani Bhatnagar
Recently released Sushen Bhatnagar's movie Monica, was based on the life of Shivani Bhatnagar, a journalist who was found murdered in her Delhi flat in 1999. Although the movie didn't do well, Divya Dutta was critically applauded for her role. Especially for the lesbian scene with co-star Kitu Gidwani which she carried it off beautifully

Actor: Mahie Gill
Real woman: Arundhati Roy
Once again, Mahie will portray a strong woman character in Vivek Agnihotri's Buddha in a Traffic Jam. Her role in the movie is based on that of writer-cum-social activist Arundhati Roy.

Actor: Sushmita Sen
Real women: Benazir Bhutto and Rani Laxmibai
Before you gasp let us tell you that both projects (which are going to be made under Sushmita's home production) are indefinitely on hold.
The biopic on former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, tentatively titled Benazir Bhutto: The Movie, is on hold because the filmmakers are yet have to get permission from Pakistan People's Party's (PPP) permission.

As for Rani Laxmibai they have everything ready - the script, the storyboard and the cast, the only problem is Sush doesn't have enough money to produce the film. Well good luck to her for we would love to see the feisty Sushmita in the garb of spirited Rani Laxmibai!

Actor: Vidya Balan
Real woman: Silk Smitha
Vidya is famous for her bold choices of roles and this one is no different. In Ekta Kapoor's The Dirty Picture, she is all set to portray Silk Smitha, a South Indian actress who featured in a string of soft-po*n films in the 80s and early 90s. While we are eagerly waiting for the release, we do hope Vidya's Sabyasachi-clad wardrobe doesn't take the zing away from Smitha's character.

Are there any other real life heroines whose lives you would like to see on the silver screen? Leave us a comment and let us know.
