Actor Kiran Karmarkar is a true-blue Maharashtrian, married to actress Rinku, who hails from Punjab. Due to this the actor cannot converse in his mother-tongue Marathi at home, something he sorely misses. So, the actor has made it a point to carry a transistor with him to the sets of Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan and tune it to a Marathi station. He reveals, "I listen to old Marathi songs whenever I am not shooting. It is so revitalising to listen to familiar melodies. My co-stars often pull my leg for being such a sucker for Marathi."

Besides Marathi songs, the actor also tries to catch up with Marathi literature in his free time on the sets. "I am a great fan of great Marathi writers like Pu La Deshpande, P K Acharya Atre and Vinda Karanadikar and carry books written by these authors to the sets. It's great recreation when I'm not shooting and I also get to cultivate my love for literature," he says.

But that still leaves out Marathi movies. Does the actor find time for them? "I watch a lot of Marathi movies," says Kiran. "I just make time for them when I can at home."

So, is his young son inheriting his love for the language? "My son is still is just a kid. But, whenever I am at home, I try to teach him a few Marathi lessons so that he can be close to his heritage," he adds.

Thanks for the article. It must be difficult for Kiran to have a balance between Marathi, Hindi and Punjabi at home but its fun to learn more than one language.

I would love to learn more languages too. I only know five languages: Hindi, Sanskrit, Punjabi, English and Urdu. My kids are learning French and I try to learn with them and my tenants are Gujrati's and now I can understand Gujrati too but I cannot speak any of the languages I didn't learn in my Childhood or in school. You can only learn proper language in school.
