Why do you always associate yourself with dance reality shows? Earlier it was Dance India Dance and now Jhalak.
What excites me about dance reality shows is the kind of creativity that choreographers have to showcase. I enjoy their work and it helps me learn a lot. When it comes to Jhalak..., I love to see a celebrity's journey from being uncomfortable about dance to putting his best foot forward. For a creative guy like me, watching and judging makes a big difference. It keeps me charged up.
Your directorial ventures F.A.L.T.U and ABCD Any Body Can Dance were appreciated by audiences. What's next as a director?
As a director, I want to surprise the audience and entertain them. It is good to see that Indian audience are accepting hatke movies now. I'm coming up with an action-based flick next with Siddharth Malhotra as lead. The shooting of this movie starts in September.
What's closer to your heart? Choreography or film direction?
Well, choreography will always be close to heart as it has given me a lot and made me whatI am today. But, I will say film-making is better off than choreography — as a choreographer, I direct the dance sequences as conceived by the film-maker. Whereas as a director of movie, I get a chance to do both. Each film comes with a set of new learnings for me and matures me as a film-maker.
It has been a struggle for you to reach the position where you are today. Have you earned good friends in industry?
I've no friends in the film industry. But, I can say I have three godfathers in Ahmed Khan, Anubhav Sinha and Hansal Mehta. They have always been my guardian angels and I can call them my 2 am friends as well.
You never talk much about your wife Lizelle. She has been a strong support for you, isn't it?
Absolutely. We met on sets of a dance shoot. Over the years, she has become my support through my ups and downs. She's the one who keeps me grounded — she constantly keeps telling me not to change. And not only that, she is my biggest critic. I prefer spending my free time with my family as they mean the world to me.
You have a strong Gujarat connect.
I belong to Jamnagar and I miss everything about it. I recently visited the city and I was surprised to see that the city has changed so much! I do miss the ganthiya a lot, and even treated myself to it recently when I was in Ahmedabad for the shoot of a dance sequence for upcoming film 2 States.
