Chapter 14
"Maan, I wanted to know why you were so angry this afternoon? You were fine initially dunno what happened to you later on. As soon as you see me- you get angry, why?", she asked.
Maan turned to look at her. "Geet, its almost 12:30 am now. And you're questioning me at this time. Shouldn't you be sleeping and shouldn't I be sleeping?"
"Well, yes, you should be sleeping- cos I'm sure you wouldn't have slept while we were not here", she said, "If you're sleepy, you can sleep. We can talk later", she said.
"What's your question?", he asked.
"Why were you so angry?", she asked.
"Shouldn't I be?", he asked.
"Why is every answer to my question a question again?", she asked, "But I'll answer it", she said. "You can be angry. Well, that's how you are- short tempered. But I sometimes feel you get angry more often on me- rather than anyone else", she said.
Maan smiled at her question. "Aap has kyun rahen ho?", asked Geet, surprised. "Mujhe dekh ke aapko hasi aati hain? Comedy circus lagti hoon main aapko?", she asked.
"Geet, tum bahut khoobsurat ho aur jaise bhi ho aache ho", he said.
"Phir?", she asked, blushing a bit at his compliment.
"Your question is like that Geet", he said, pausing for a few seconds. "Geet, it's not that I get angry only on you- if you think so, then honey you're not watching me close enough. I lose temper on almost everyone and make his or her life a living hell. In fact at times- I feel only with you, my anger is at bay and I try not to shout that much. But even that control at times is lost because you may say something or do something that might infuriate me more", he said.
He looked at Geet- who kept staring at him quietly. He smiled again and asked, "you're upset that I behaved rudely with you in office?"
"Hmmm, well yes, at that point I was. But I got over it", she said.
"Anger is a very powerful emotion Geet- whether in love or hate- in either cases, it can be devastating. The other person who is subjected to this anger will not realize what the angry person is going through. However, I am surprised and happy you have understood that and also got over it. Good! You are getting used to Maan Singh Khurana's ways!", he said.
"Why are your ways so different, difficult and strange?"
"Geet, that's because at every phase in life- I've had to make tough choices that made me different, difficult, and strange. I had to discontinue college to take up family responsibilities; I had to manage not just myself, after my parents' death but three other people whom I love very dearly. I've seen my family heartbroken after mom and dad's sudden death. I've seen the family business go from bad to worse. However, I've revived it and I'm happy that my family is very happy today and my business is very prosperous- there are always problems and compromises that I have to make- no one sees it. People only see the angry, rich, and handsome person in me. No one sees the struggle that went into building the empire that was and is my grandmother's dream".
Geet listened quietly.
"But that's the past. Something that had hardened me, makes me difficult. Today, I do not tolerate carelessness, irresponsibility, and negligence. Because I wasn't like that and I am not like that. I only give people one chance to make a mistake- the second time, I tear their lives apart".
Geet opened her eyes wide in shock.
"You're wondering what a mean husband this marriage has gotten you?"
"No!", she said, honestly, "So, Maan this marriage also must have been a tough decision for you, isn't it?"
Wasn't it tough for you?", he asked.
"It was! But whatever has happened before the wedding was for the first time I was going through crisis in life. But I see, you've been a very senior player in playing through various crisis in life"
Maan laughed. "Geet, I think we should" and paused trying to think if he was making sense or if what he was trying to think was a sensible thought
"I'm listening", she said.
"I wanted to say, whatever has happened before the wedding to you- I'm not sure what it meant to you- you never told me and I never asked you". Geet was about to say something, when he lifted his hand up as a gesture for her to listen.
"Like I said, you never told me and I never asked you. I will never ask you too- until and unless you want to come and talk to me about that".
"Maan, it's not that I never wanted to speak to you but'" and stopped not understanding how she should explain to him.
"But you were never comfortable. Right?", he asked. She nodded her head in a "yes".
"Geet, I understand we are married for just 3-4 month now. But you have known me as your boss for quite a few years. I agree professional and personal lives are very different. But do you want to start getting comfortable with me or do you just want to be the way you are- casual not so concerned and living like acquaintances?", he asked.
"Whatever is your choice- I will respect it and accept it. I might force my ideas and thoughts on others outside but not on anyone at home and you are no different", he said.
Geet became quiet again wondering where the conversation was heading. Her thoughts were disturbed by the buzzing sound of Maan's phone.
"Gosh, raat ke do bhaje bhi log chain se rehne nahin dete aapko?", she asked.
"When you head great responosibilities people will always be there to disturb you and trouble you. It's just that you need to know when to let them disturb you and when not to", he said. "Like, I will not see that message or email now. I will only see it tomorrow morning".
"Chalo ab raat kaafi ho gayi, so jao. Even I have a busy day tomorrow", he said.
"When are your days not busy?", she asked and laughed.
"Never", he said and laughed back. She turned the other side and closed her eyes and heard Maan say, "Geet, I dint want to hurt you this afternoon. I'm sorry for that", he said.
She turned back to face him, "Aapko sorry bolne ki zaroorat nahin hain. Aapko yeh saare words, "sorry", "thank-you", "please" etc etc, suit nahin karte" and smiled.
He smiled back too. Even in a small dim light in the bedroom- in the darkness-, her smile was so radiant and captivating, thought Maan.
"Good night", he said.
"Good night", she said.
Geet was at the Ganesh mandir close-by to Niharika's home at 7 in the morning, next day. She sat at the marble staircase at the entrance of the mandir after her darshan, waiting for Niharika to come.
She looked around the people who came to the mandir with no specific observations or thoughts. She then saw Niharika running up the stairs, panting. She sat down beside Geet and said, "Geet meri maa, if you want to meet- please give atleast one or two hours notice, man. What is this- you texted me at 6am and simply told me to meet you here. I have'nt done a thing since morning except for taking a shower and rushing here. I'll be late to work today", she cribbed.
"Oho relax. you will not be late to work. I got lunch for you. After you have your darshan- we will go to the restaurant near-by and have breakfast. I will drop you to office and get back. All you have to do, is listen to me and advice bhai", she said.
"Ok- sounds perfect! When you are doing so much for me- why cant I do what I've always been doing?", she said, winking.
"What have you always been doing?", asked Geet.
"Arey listening to you! You will never give me a chance to speak- so what other options do I have?", said Niharika and Geet hit her playfully on her shoulder.
"Chalo I'll go have darshan and come.then we can head for breakfast", she said and walked into the temple. Geet walked behind her into the temple again for a second darshan.
They walked out of the temple towards the car park and Geet unlocked the car and sat at the driver's seat.
Niharika got in beside her and said, "Phir se ghaadi change? Last time tu black color Mercedes mein aayi thi. Ab red color skoda mein aayi hain. Kitne cars hain bhai aapke pati dev ke paas?"
"Pata nahin yaar. Jo ghaadi milti hain- main drive karti hoon. I bother neither about the brand nor the color like Maan does. He loves cars and likes having all imported ones- different models and makes and colors- right from small cars to sedans to SUV's to jeeps".
"Hmmm, kafi interesting hain", said Niharika.
"Anyways, tell me now. What have been summoned here for?", said Niharika.
Geet raised her eye-brow at the formal language used by Niharika and started laughing. "I know I know- that's the problem of having a lawyer as your fiance", she said and winked.
"Nihu actually'" started off Geet and narrated the incident with Maan the previous day afternoon and then the conversation they had that night. Niharika listened carefully, while looking at the road ahead.
"Hmmm", she said, after Geet finished talking. "So, what is your confusion and question, meri jaan?"
"Nihu, Maan's not wrong in expecting me to tell him my past. But like he said I'm not comfortable talking to him so much. I talk to everyone at home at ease, pata nahi why I cant talk to him or open up to him so freely. Even when I would work for KC I would avoid him as much as possible- though it was a great learning experience to work with him. But you know'.", she said, driving into the parking lot of the restaurant.
"Subeh ke aat baje parking nahin hain?", said Geet, irritated as she drove through the parking. "Valet parking bhi open nahin hain, abhi".
"I always wondered why people kept saying India is highly populated, densely populated , very tough survival etc etc. AAj dekh li. Weekday pe, subeh subeh itni beed"
"I guess there is some function here. There is a finction hall adjacent to this restaurant", she said and luckily saw someone backing out of the parking slot. She quickly pulled into the parking slot and took a deep breath.
"Chalo, bach gaye", she said, getting out of the car.
"Maan ke paas agar koi choti gaadi hain, to next time woh le aana. In bade bade ghaadiyon ko parking nahin milti", said Niharika and Geet smirked.
"So", said Niharika, after placing the order and returning the menu card to the waiter. "Geet, I think its high you should start accepting this marriage, Maan and move on".
"I understand that, Nihu, but how?", she said, "Like I said I'm not comfortable. I try to avoid him"
"Geet, what's there to feel uncomfortable? Will he eat you up?", she asked.
"Its easily said than done!", said Geet, looking away.
Niharika took a deep breath and realized it was going to be easy. "Did you tell him that you are meeting me for breakfast?"
"No, I just told Daadiji and came", said Geet.
"Why haven't you told him?", asked Niharika.
"I dunno", said Geet.
"Geet, this is what you should start doing first. Keep him informed. I'm sure he will not question you about where you are going, with whom you are going and why you are going. But it is a matter of courtesy. Like how informed Daadi, you should have informed him too", she said.
"How is that connected to this?", asked Geet.
"Geet you nitwit", said Niharika, angrily. "That is how you start making a conversation with him and try to ease out the discomfort. How else would you start talking to a man who absolutely doesn't speak at all?"
"I don't get it", said Geet.
"Tu Geet Maan Singh Khurana nahin, Geet buddhu ban gayi hain", said Niharika.
"Thanks for the compliment", said Geet rolling her eyes.
"See Geet, listen now! We don't have time to argue as I have a meeting at 10:30. I need to be in office by then".
"Go on", said Geet.
"Geet, start talking to him casually, small conversations- like where you are going, how you spent your day, ask him how his day was and'", she said and paused for some time thinking, " may be some general conversations- like sports, politics, travel, food etc etc and keep him informed about things happening in your life- like shopping, or driving, partying- yaar, in short job hi tum karte ho. That way- you'll develop that comfort with him slowly and he might start contributing to conversations too. May be you could also narrate conversations that you had with Daadi or anyone else if you think it was funny or might interest him", said Niharika.
"Hmmm", said Geet.
"I can't believe I'm teaching you talking, Geet. Ghor Kaliyug hain bhai", said Niharika and started laughing while Geet scowled.
"You are such a b****", she said, and Niharika laughed, "I know I know, love!".
"Now, eat in peace and Geet, please for heaven's sake- start moving on"
"That's what I want too- I mean, sometimes, you know we don't talk a word for days and its like not so good. But may be I should start being more nice to him. After all, he does so much for everyone and never asks for anything in return. For the first time, he asked me if I wanted to stay the way I am, or move on and walk with him".
