'Supernatural' Season 9 Spoilers: Misha Collins Says Show is 'Gratuitously Misogynistic'.

A recurring question by both Supernatural fans and critics asks whether or not the show tends to have misogynistic tendencies.

Misha Collins, who portrays the shows' recently fallen angel Castiel, fielded such a question by a fan at the Salute to Supernatural in Whippany, N.J. in early May.

What Collins concluded is that, at times, the CW show can be "gratuitously misogynist."

"It seems like there are certainly small ways in which the show is sort of gratuitously misogynistic when it doesn't mean to be," Collins said. "It kind of makes me cringe sometimes."

"I'm frankly surprised by the show," Collins said while also backtracking to try not to offend any of the people who help to create the show. "There are stupid things in the show that they shouldn't do. Why do they have to say "b----" and kill all the women?"

The crowd cheers for this statement. Although all those who flocked to the panel are fans of the program, many wish to see a few changes in the way female characters are handled.

If you are an actress and you are cast Supernatural, you can generally assume your part will not last too long. Even if you do have a recurring appearance, such as the demon Ruby (Genevieve Padalecki and Katie Cassidy), Dean's love interest Lisa Braeden (Cindy Sampson) or fellow hunters Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Jo (Alona Tal), you can expect to die or be written out.

Fan's were particularly bothered by the way in which Meg (Rachel Miner and Nicki Aycox) was summarily executed during "Goodbye Stranger" after having survived all eight current seasons.

However, there is one female character that currently seems to be holding her own. Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day), first introduced in season 7 is still living following her last appearance in season 8's "Pac-Man Fever."

Collins points out that this is because Charlie is uninterested in men and posses no threat to the Winchester boy's close-knit relationship.

And that is what a lot of Supernatural is based on, the bond and struggle of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). People who come between them, most notably women, are seen as a "threat" both by the show and by fans, and are quickly disposed of after they have served their main purpose.

Whether this brother dynamic can be accomplished in a less misogynistic manner is for the writer's of Supernatural to decide.

Supernatural Season 9 Confirmed To Get New 23 Episodes Instead Of Just 22

Supernatural season 9 confirmed to get new 23 episodesinstead of just 22. According to a new report from Spoiler TV, CW Supernatural producer, Jim Michaels was asked on Twitter, how many episodes would the show be serving up for its upcoming 9th season, and he simply replied with: "23."

So, it turns out that CW loves the show so got damn much that they decided to order an additional episode, so we'll be seeing more of Dean and Sam, fighting off the crazy demon madness next season, yay! Unfortunately, the well for season 9 spoilers has run dry at the moment. I mean, we haven't heard jack about what they plan on doing, yet. It's kind of odd too, because we usually,at least, get some teaser details after the finale, but not this year.

Oh well. Hopefully, something will pop up in the coming weeks, especially since they got an additional episode this year. Stay tuned. Season 9 premieres this Fall 2013.

'Supernatural' Spoilers Season 9: Writer Ben Edlund Leaves for 'Revolution', Scribes Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder Are Back.

Writer Ben Edlund will not be returning to Supernatural for season 9, according to statements made at the All Hell Breaks Loose convention in Australia last weekend.

The first mention of Edlund's departure appears to have been made during a panel by Misha Collins (Castiel). Producer Jim Michaels later confirmed the news on Twitter.

"I will confirm that Ben has left us very amicably & will be missed but we do have Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder back with us!!!" Michaels stated.

Edlund will make his departure from the CW in order to rejoin Supernatural creator Eric Kripke over atRevolution on NBC, according to tv.com. Creator of comic book superhero The Tick, Edlund also has a lengthy resume of sci-fi television contributions, including work with Joss Whedon as writer, producer, and supervising producer on Firefly and Angel. His experience on shows with such dedicated followings could help to establish Revolution on better footing.

The writer and executive producer was brought in as a consulting producer for the second season of Supernatural back in 2006. Since then he has become in integral cog in a well-oiled machine and even had two runs as director ("The Man Who Would Be King" and "Reading is Fundamental")

Edlund's writing often tested the boundaries of the show, particularly in "The French Mistake" when he dropped the fictional Winchester brothers into the roles of real life Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. He is also responsible for the return of the Ghostfacers, exploding a fairy in a microwave, and the black and white Halloween episode "Monster Movie."

Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder were both responsible for three episodes in season 6, "My Heart will go On," "Mannequin 3: The Reckoning," and "You Can't Handle the Truth." In the interim the duo worked on the TV show Ringer.
