Both internet as well as non settop viewing ( which btw is probably tripple of the set top box viewers even now ) needs to be measured ... And hopefully this like you said , would lead to some good quality seasonal episodic programs. However I beleive in India daily soaps will always play a big role ...its an escape / form of entertainment for a huge majority who due to financial / social reasons have no other form of entertainment.

Exactly my views. TV is a big escape/form of entertainment for the huge middle class and the housewives. That may be one big hurdle for India going the seasonal/episodic way. But in US too, we have day time drama like Bold and Beautiful/All my Children which have been running for years together and which actually make Ekta's shows look logical for the people who are at home. But in the evening and at night they have seasonal shows/dramas which come for 3-6 months and then go out with a Finale. I so hope we have this kind of system in India. Housewives and middle class bhi khush and intelligent viewers bhi khush.

Interesting discussion here ... I'm in complete agreement that the current evaluation system needs a lot of rework. One big stumbling block also is that viewership in India is very fragmented in terms of types of shows ... big town/small town/ urban/rural ... just a very simplified example - the popular shows on online forums rarely coincide with the TRP leaders ... is this genuine mismatch, or is it a reflection of different segments of the audience having different tastes.

Considering the size of TV viewing population of India, that is not surprising in the least ... it would be far more surprising if the audience tastes were similar across all age groups and social strata. But again, how would broadcasters measure this difference, especially in terms of ad revenues ... which is the bottom line for them.

And what about international viewers? Having lived in five different countries in the last twenty years, I can vouch for the fact that most expatriate Indians subscribe to Indian TV channels, either through official partnership with local broadcasters or through local private operators. And Indian population in foreign countries is a sizeable number, plus they probably pay higher subscription rates in their local currency ... do the channels tap into that revenue?

Interesting times ahead indeed.

Interesting times, indeed.
I am now very curious how all of this is going to play out.
