Debojit Saha writes about his new-found mission... Those feeble steps and those wrinkled faces which radiate warmth and wisdom… Yes, I am talking about the elderly citizens of the country — especially those who have been abandoned by their near and dear ones and are forced to stay at old-age homes. I had developed a close relationship with the inmates of one such home, J.J. Dharmasala, in Mumbai, during my stay there. Since then, the relationship has grown stronger and every now and then I go and meet my adopted parents. Taking time out of my hectic schedule, I make it a point to visit them and sing for them. Perhaps I find an unexplainable connection with every elderly man or woman, as I had lost my mother at an early age. The void created by her death still suffocates me. In every elderly citizen, I see my mother and aspire to extend my helping hand to him. Since I am a singer with little "clout", I am planning to use my music and celebrity status to help parents in distress, especially those abandoned by their children. I have begun saving some money from my shows, which I shall contribute for the cause of the elderly. The proceeds of my Silchar show, for instance, has been stashed away and will be donated to various old-age homes. I am also planning to help various old-age homes in Mumbai, Guwahati and Silchar. Besides the old-age homes, I would also like to do my bit for orphanages in different parts of Assam and Maharastra. It is my earnest request to the young generation of the country to respect their parents and look after them in their old age, when they need their children the most. Our parents dedicate their entire lives raising us in their best possible manner, but when we grow up we forget them. I am also planning to release an album dedicated solely to the aged. In 2007, I shall perform in various concerts where I will focus on the need for "need of love and care" of the elderly. Half the proceeds from my forthcoming concerts will be dedicated for the cause that is close to my heart. I want to thank Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani for this making path-breaking film Lago Raho Munnabhai, where they have brought into focus the plight of elderly citizens of the country. Art and entertainment can play a major role in sensitising the people about the needs of the elderly and help improve their condition. I, too, am working in my own limited way to make their life a better and brighter one. And what better way can it be than music. |
