It's no secret that the Deols are one of the most respected families in Bollywood. Evidence of this was seen at the music launch of YPD2, where some of the biggest stars in the industry (SRK, Hritikh, Akshay, Aamir to name a few) came to support the Deols. There are good reasons as to why they are so respected...
Dharmendra: One of the biggest stars ever in Bollywood. Has the record for most number of Hits delivered by an actor. Starred in the biggest Blockbuster in Bollywood history: SHOLAY. And, today's number one star (Salman Khan) is often said to have similarities with Dharmendra, acting-wise and look/physique wise.
Sunny Deol: Been known to be a respectful and shy man. Has a very dominating on-screen presence. Has been apart of many successful films, including one of the biggest Blockbusters in Bollywood history: GADAR
As a matter of fact, the baap-beta jodi of Dharmendra and Sunny Deol are always talked about as competing with one another: competing for which one was arguably the biggest Blockbuster ever in Bollywood: SHOLAY or GADAR!
Bobby Deol: Not as successful as his father and brother, but still has some well-known successful films to his credit such as SOLDIER and GUPT. Has his share of friends in the industry.
Let's admit it. The Deols were going through a rough patch for a number of years from around 2003-till 2006. It was in 2007, when the trio united for the first time on-screen with APNE that they found success after a long time.
Then, of course, came YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA in 2011, which was also a success.
Now, in 2013, comes YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA 2. Can the film score at the box office like the first one did? That's the big question!
The trailer of YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA 2 was released a few months back. Seeing the trailer, one can see that this one is more modernized than the previous one. It has more of an urban feel, but it also seems as if the content and songs also have a massy feel.
The opening of the film will be good, especially at mass-dominated areas/ single screens (the Deols are massy stars) and in North where the Deols are extremely popular. It should be an excellent opening in the North. There is some concern though that YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, which is doing outstanding business, may affect YPD 2's opening. Personally, I think that the Deols will still get a solid opening in North and at single screens/mass areas around the country, whereas YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI will likely continue it's strong run multiplexes. YPD 2's business may be on the lower side in the South.
The trailer of YPD 2 received a good amount of appreciation. Even major stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan endorsed the trailer. Given the appreciation for the first part and for the trailer of this one, the film definitely has good chances of being liked. However, it must be mentioned again that the first part had a more Indian and massy feel to it whereas this one has massy elements mixed with urban feel. To what extent the masses (the target audience) take to the film remains to be seen. There is possibility of universal acceptance, but again it's a wait-n-watch situation. Also, the director of the film Sangeeth Sivan has a mixed track record. He does have Hit film KYA KOOL HAI HUM as a part of his track record, but he also has several flop films including Bobby's EK THE POWER OF ONE and Sunny's ZOR. Also, the track involving the monkey in the film brings memories of NO PROBLEM (they used a gorilla or something in that) which was a flop film. But, the Deols seem confident of the film.
My Box Office Predictions for Yamla Pagala Deewana 2:
Opening Day: 11 crores net
Opening Weekend: 33 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 80+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Hit
Some side notes:
The latest update is that the trailer of CHENNAI EXPRESS is NOT releasing with YPD 2.
In the promo of YPD2, Sunny asks "how much of difference in time is there between your birth and Prem's?". Dharmendra replies "2 minutes...I made maggie noodles, and Prem came out". Hmmm, perhaps Salman Khan special appearance?!
