In gujarati marriages when damad came to marry a girl, girls parents wash his foot and then only they start marriage.

ab kumud ke parents to kisi aur ki shadi me busy the.. so kumud thought to complete this rasam by her self by washing his foot

I am sure everything that has been shown before the N night was in some way related to the mariage rasams, so that what they did was not wrong at the end of the day.
