The next day, the whole day Arjun found himself thinking about the stranger. She kept creeping up in his mind though he was very much involved in solving a case. He speculated on what drove her to the beach in the middle of the night and the reason behind her heart wrenching crying. The crying. He felt restless whenever he remembered his reaction to her crying. It unnerved him. And, to his utter disbelief, he felt anger at the person or persons - who were strangers just like her, who could be dead for all he knew - responsible for bringing this state upon her.
He found himself worried for her, unsure if she is alright and if she got home safely last night. He looked out the window at the setting sun, why did he feel this unexplainable connection with her? He does not know who she is, hell, he had never seen how she looks. He probably never would. Then why? He looked away from the window and couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever hear her again, if he'd ever see her, if she'd come to the beach again...tonight.
Few hours later, Arjun stepped onto the familiar soft sand and rolled his jeans up. Like every other night he walked to the end of the shore. Like every other night he stood there for a while, feeling the cold waves crash at his feet and the breeze on his face. He did not however, feel the calmness set inside him like every other night. He sighed turning to look at the rock a few feet away. Was she here?
Walking to the rock, he did not sit down at his usual spot. Instead, he walked around to the other side. Disappointment. To his surprise that's what he felt upon finding no one on there. Soon, the disappointment ebbed into anger, his fingers fisted to his sides and his jaws set tightly clenched. Anger, not at her but at himself for thinking about her the whole day, for thinking she'd come, for thinking tonight would be any different to the other nights.
Taking a deep calming breath, Arjun walked back to his usual spot and sat down leaning against the rock, stretching his legs. The sea was not so calming tonight, in fact it trashed around quite violently. Sighing, he crossed his arms across his chest and closed his eyes, resting for the first time in the whole day. Few minutes passed by and then suddenly,
"Thank you!"
He heard a soft whisper from the other side of the rock. Arjun's eyes instantly flew open and he stilled, did he really hear that? Was she here? He turned his head to the side and strained his ears. Few seconds later he heard her clear her throat and say a gentle 'thank you' again. He immediately understood she was thanking him for last night. For his silent company through the night, listening to her cry and not asking any questions...for just being there.
He did not reply.
A few moments passed by in silence.
"Aap...aap ho na?" Her soft and gentle voice, still trickled with pain fell on his ears. Arjun sighed, whole day he'd been thinking about her, wondering if he'd hear her again and get a chance to see her. Now that she was here, he was clueless as to what to say to her. Shaking his head, he decided on a simple, "Hmmm..."
Few more moments later she spoke again.
"Kal...woh...socha tha ki thodi der yeha baithke jaaungi...par jab aayi toh mehsoos hua ki kitni akeli pad gayi hoon. Ansoon mujhse rukhi nahi..."
She trailed off into silence.
Arjun smiled sadly hearing her. He was well aware of that feeling. "Yeh akelapan sabse sacha saathi hota hain. Chod ne ka naam hi nahi leta..."
Silence again. It wasn't awkward though it was a comforting silence.
"Kabhi aisa bhi waqt ho tha tha, jab mujhe iss ka matlab bhi pata nahi tha...par ab..." She said and he could hear her pain and anguish. Though he felt an unexplainable connection with her, she was still a stranger which is why it surprised him when the next set of words spilled out of his mouth before he could stop them.
"Par main isse bahut acchi tarah se waqif hoon..." Arjun said and paused, more sadness dawned on him, "...haan beech main kuch der ke liye laga ki shaayad akelepan ka saath choot gaya lekin...lekin ab mujhe pata chelgaya ki yeh mere zindagi ka ek bahut bada hissa hain...isse door nahi kar saktha..."
His words lingered in the air around them. They sat quietly for a while letting the sounds of the waves crashing wash over them. He heard her sigh heavily before she spoke,
"Do saal pehle jab meri maa...maa ghuzar gayi, mere baba ne mujhse kaha tha, ki ghum, akelapan yeh sab humari zindagi main ek prerna banni chahiye...to find something to live for"
Arjun rolled his eyes. Was he really getting the, you've got to live on, no matter what philosophy again. What her baba said and what everyone says is very nice to hear and so much harder to do. For the second time tonight he was disappointed. Again the reason for his disappointment was the stranger. For some reason he felt she's different, he felt she'd understand his pain better than others. Yet, here she was, drowned in her own sorrow and giving him the find something to live for philosophy.
He was wrong, she is just like everyone else.
"Ya? Well aap banayiye aapke akelepan ko aapki prerna...good luck..." Arjun said in a monotone. Suddenly finding her company suffocating like others', he got up to leave.
He took a couple of steps but halted when she spoke,
"Aap jaa rahe ho?" her soft voice sounded panicky.
"Haan..." Arjun said and took another step forward when he heard a shuffling and he knew she stood up, looking at his back from around the rock. He did not bother to turn around and see her.
"Aap achanak aise kyun? Maine jo kaha aapko bura laga? I didn't mean to hurt you...I just...I miss him...a lot. Woh humesha aisi philosophical baatein karthe the...ab bus unki yeh baatein aur yaadein hi reh gayi...aap please aise math jaayiye..."
The childish innocence in her voice was enough to make him change his mind and turn around. She stood behind the rock almost hidden, he could only see her shoulder up. A light breeze blew the hair off her face and thank heavens for the moonlight which was just enough to see her face. Like her voice, her face spilled innocence and simplicity. But, what drew him into her and held him firmly were her big doe like eyes. They twinkled, but with sadness.
They seemed oddly familiar.
She looked at him scared and panicked, as if a child lost in crowd and needed guidance. Their eyes met briefly before her eyelashes lowered and she looked down a small crease forming between her brows.
"Kya hua?" he asked noticing the frown and her suddenly stiffened shoulders.
"Main, main..." she hesitated,
"Kya?" Arjun prompted gently.
"Main aise kaise ek ajnabi ko...?" She paused thinking and he waited patiently.
"Aap jaayi ye..." She said suddenly much to Arjun's amusement.
He raised an eyebrow and stared at her, is she for real.
"Kya? Ek minute main jaa raha tha aur aapne mujhe rokha. Aap..."
"Rokha toh rukh gaye...ab jaane ke liye keh rahi hoon, jaayiye na..."
Arjun's brows stayed high up on his forehead. Seeing her pain stricken face suddenly plunge into panic, he understood the lines in which she was thinking. He had a sudden urge to explain that he was not going to harm her in anyway. So, he proceeded to explain himself, raising a hand up like people would when they are about to say something and took a step forward.
"Dekhiye main..."
As soon as he took a step forward she took one back, as if there wasn't a hundred ton rock between them shielding her from him. Rolling his eyes, Arjun took another step forward. And that's it. She turned around and started to sprint away from him.
He stood there in disbelief and watched her fast retreating form, which soon enough got engulfed by the nights' darkness.
