Yes Sholay it is, I love this film, my entire family loves it , Drama, action, comedy, music, dance, got it all , the quintessential Hindi film. And the immortal characters Thakur, Gabbar, Basanti, Jai, Veeru, Dhanno, Radha, Samba, Kalia ect ...the most entertaining film ever.

Sholay is overrated? Ha!

Only a person with ZERO knowledge or deliberate attempt to ignore its importance in Indian cinema and Indian milieu will say it did not deserve this title!

Sholay showed what BO was capable of. Sholay held record for longest running film ever before DDLJ. Lagaan barely ran for 50 weeks. Sholay ran for 5 years no less! First ever film to run this long and keep collecting at BO all the while it ran!!

It won Best film of last 50 years at Filmfare's 50th award ceremony. It held record for highest selling DVD for any Bollywood film till 2007. It was declared film of the millennium by BBC!

Sholay represents Bollywood and our desi brand of entertainment. Sholay represents best of star power. Each character is memorable and imitated or referred to by Indians till date - including Dhanno the mare!! Is it shown only in TV serials, plays or films? NOPE! It's referred to in daily life too!

The dialogues, characters, scenes, situations are all epic!

Do you know even the cassettes of its dialogues used to sell like hot cakes in India?

It was the first film to be narrated on radio! And people used to listen to the entire film and its dialogues on AIR!

Even after nearly 40 years it still captivates imagination of people!

Lagaan would not be in this poll if not for the Oscar nomination. For all its finesse and achievements, it is not even toe nail of Sholay in terms of phenomena.

I agree with all other winners except AR Rahman for greatest music director. It is mainly due to Oscars won by him. In reality if there is one guy who changed the face of Bollywood music and whose songs were liked by masses and classes instantly - and whose music's magic continues to linger on after generations it is one and only RD BURMAN!

Even firangees remix his songs till date!

And Bollywood keeps copying him all the time. Pancham Da is the 1 to 10 in music, only then others come in picture!

In actresses I think voters were influenced by Mother India's Oscar hype again. Nutan ji is far more worthy of this title and way more versatile than Nargis ji. Seema, Sujata, Bandini alone are enough. No need to even refer to rest of her illustrous career. She's also the first actress to get popular on TV also with her serial on DD. And the harbinger of natural performances in Hindi cinema which was otherwise seeped in dramatic styles of acting.

Lata Mangeshkar also had once called her the greatest actress ever.
