Is anyone portrayed properly in Bollywood? Forget Bollywood is anyone portrayed properly in media?
I think we have to realize that the people we see in media are merely characters. They maybe Hindu, Muslim, Christian , they maybe Desi, NRI, foreigner, they maybe gay or straight, they maybe rich or poor, they maybe many things – but they are not representatives of any social group or community. They should be viewed as just solitary characters.
There is a need for authenticity and stereotypes should be avoided. We ought to point out when someone is stereotyped or over the top. However, I think we expect too much. Muslims are such a large group in India that no character can represent them completely. Even within two moderate Muslim families you will find many differences. Also liberal Muslims get offended at the conservative characters while conservative Muslims get offended at the liberal characters. No one will be happy. We just need to accept characters for who they are. What is portrayed is just how that one solitary character practices Islam – it has nothing to do with Muslims in general.
I think on the whole Muslims have better representations in Indian cinema. We are atrocious with minority portrayals. Orientals are slant eyed people who speak "Ching Chong Ching", Africans are just big gorilla men hired as bodyguards. White people are nothing but pretentious pricks with exaggerated accents and have no clue about India. Gay men are just effeminate jellyfish who sway their hips and hit on men all day. I've never seen any entertainment industry that is so grossly offensive or racist.
I dont know what Bollywood bases its Muslim portrayal on but sometimes it gets quite extreme. In real life people are normal looking and not everyone wears a cap and has a beard and talks religion all the time. This despite being religious in their daily life. So yes I agree.

Hi Guys,
So I just want to ask you if you think Muslims are properly portrayed in Bollywood? Many movies have come out about Muslim people. Now I want to begin with the fact , that I am Muslim too. I have grown up in a moderately religious family. My parents were never the most religious people, but my extended family is saying prayers 5 times a day but not wearing Hijab and dressing up normally like other people.I want to say that all Muslims are not the way they are portrayed in Fanaa, Qurbaan etc.We are not all wearing hijab, we should but we don't.We are not all praying 5 times a day, we should but we don't.We all have our own preferences and we are no different than other religions.^Actually Muslims are allowed to act and watch movies?? Just asking!!
