Interesting discussions. As a history student i hav always read tht the vedas have always been a tribute 2 the elemental gods like Indra, savita, gayatri. Indra had been the chief god of the aryans.
Vedic age as it is called is divided into 2 stages- early stage categorised by nature worship, discovery of iron etc. & later age- here the present trinity emerges wid their basic functions of creation, preservation & destruction. The various functions of the elemental gods were merged in these 3.
References of shiva's worship is found as early as 2500 BC.

The attempt to project the metaphor here is good, except that it fails as far as this para goes:

Also, the asuras had a policy not to enjoy alcohol - which the devas were just the opposite of (in this case, I endorse the devas 😆)

But your analogy abiove is reversed - the devas are who would represent the sensory system, while the asuras would represent the inner consciousness!

What you said @Red makes the point very clear.

If one experiences the inner self then he/she is immortal.If one does penance for fulfilling their desires then you can't conclude that they experienced their innerselves.Infact the one who realizes the innerself doesn't have any desires.

Coming to Samudra Manthan...

This tale is an allegorical description of what transpires during a kundalini awakening process. Kundalini is a latent energy that lays dormant in the spine. Upon awakening, it rises in a sensation akin to a slithering snake, up the spinal column (Spinal Column is represented by Mount Meru in the story).
The philosophical meaning of this episode is that the Devas in us (good vrittis) start churning the nadis with pranayama Kundalini shakti is awakened and it gives us the true knowledge that we become immortal.Kshir-sagar is here Muladhara chakra and kundalini is nectar and if our bad vrittis (asura) wish to take that energy for their use God intervenes and helps the devas in us.

The side of the Sura's represents the good forces and the side of the Asura's represents the negative energies and hence all the characters that played a positive role in these stories have been placed on the side of the Suras and vice-versa."The Devatas are immortal but the Asuras are mortal" meaning the good never dies but is only encapsulated by the evil,when the evil is destroyed then the good can be experienced.

No problem with what is shown in the serial,the more they confuse,the more we explore and the more we learn(sometimes practice)
