Relationships-New & Old May 14, 2013
Relationships are tricky business. Just like a tree in the backyard, they take years to grow with and a lot of work, effort, commitment and investment- in the right proportions and at the right time.
'Qubool hai' is one show where relationships are an essential component of the story. Some complex, others more straightforward, these relationships are what drive this show and what drives us to this show.
Gul and her team have a done a great job in portraying the complexities of all these relationships through the eyes of two families, interlinked with each other through blood, hatred, betrayal and love.
Today, we got a glimpse of some of these relationships- the old ones and the emerging new ones.
Asad & Zoya: One of their most beautiful creations; a unique relationship that has touched most of us and kept us glued to this show. Dilshaad's keen eye and her pledge to get her son married has given us a taste of what this emerging new relationship is about. While they might deny their feelings to each other; there is no doubt that each ceremony preceding the D day is helping them form a stronger bond. The two engagements, the Jashne Saugat, and now the Jashne Bahar have not only announced this new relationship to the world, but also given them tons of blessings from their well-wishers like badi khaala and Ayesha bi today. Each ceremony has a significance in their loves and will help Asad and Zoya stay bonded to each other through thick and thin.
Engagement- The ring that refuses to leave the Zoya's finger is a reminder that neither can be separated; they have formed a relationship for life and even if physically apart, will remain bonded forever.
Jashne Saugat- Asad's gift of the sari. As Zoya said, 'sari tho sirf kabhie kabhie pehni jaati hai, lekin yeh designer kurti tho main hamesha pahen sakti hoon.' Even though a lot of people, including Asad criticized Zoya for converting the sari to a kurti, I think it was one of the most beautiful gestures depicted in this show. It just validates Zoya's character once again. She really values relationships and she will do anything to preserve them even if the rest of the world criticizes her. I am glad she didn't give any explanation to Asad. Instead, made him realize why the kurti reflected her personality-progressive but attached to her loved ones. Hopefully, one day, Asad will realize what the kurti and Zoya really stand for.
Jashne Bahar: Another beautiful ceremony where the bride is adorned with flowers- the ultimate jewel of nature. I really loved the whole concept of the ceremony and I would like to thank Gul for introducing us non- Muslims to such a beautiful tradition from their culture.
The Imam-e-Zamin (the sacred thread) that Asad tied on Zoya's arm was another wonderful part of today's ceremony. Ayesha bi, an elderly well-wisher of the family gifted the couple this sacred thread that will always protect them from evil and keep them bonded to each other. Symbolically, Asad will always be there to protect his Zoya.
The garland around the couple was another symbolic bond. It seems that the whole world, barring a few (Tanveer) is helping Asad and Zoya bond in this new relationship. All these good wishes will not go waste. Tanveer should just set shop somewhere else. Leave these two alone as they have enough defenses around them- their love and best wishes from the elderly and well-wishers.
Ayaan-Humeira: Their relationship is a little tricky as it's more one sided. Ayaan is yet to accept Humeira as someone he loves from the bottom of his heart. He will probably grow into this relationship with time. He has certainly changed since his visit to the Mazhar Sharif J
Dilshaad's necklace ending up in Humeira's neck via Zoya is very significant. Just shows, that despite all their differences, they are all one big family. Dilshaad's blessings extend to her step son and his would be wife also. What better way to convey those blessings than through the girl's elder sister. This scene has reassured me that Ayaan-Zoya will NEVER be a couple. Ayaan and Humeira are meant to be.
While Dilshaad was a witness to Asad-Zoya bond, Rashid witnessed Ayaan putting the necklace on Humeira.
Ultimately, they will all be part of Dilshaad-Rashid's extended family with Badi B at the top. As Badi B said today, "khoon ke rishte se kuch oopar nahin hota." This foreshadows that one day they will all be united and Zoya will be the messenger- or the common link to unite the two families.
Great symbolisms today-
1.Asad will always protect Zoya- the taveez
2. Zoya will link the two familes- she helped get the necklace from Dilshaad's house to Rashid's house
3. Zoya will always value relationships over society. That's why I don't see her running away from her nikaah voluntarily. She will never betray Dilshaad and Asad.
4. With Dilshaad and Najma at her side, Zoya will always be able to counter any taunts from the society and her would be husband. Loved how she gave it back to Asad today.
5. No matter what, Asad can never resist her charm when he is close to Zoya. His love for her overpowers all his negativity towards her.
6. Shireen/Razia will be outsiders when both these families reunite
