Scars ~ Part 1
Khushi sat on the bed. She was now married. Her new life had begun.
Indeed, she hadn't really wanted to get married, especially because she knew nothing about the man who was supposed to be her husband, but she had to, she had no other choice. It was either she got married into a loving family, or remain an unloved burden. She chose to get married. Anjali ma'am, now her di, had helped her so much over the last god knows how many years.
Khushi's thoughts were interrupted when she heard the door slowly open. Khushi looked down at her knees. Arnav pushed the door open and then shut it, locking it behind her. Khushi clutched her knees closer to her chest. He slowly walked towards the bed. Khushi saw from the corner of her eye that he was sitting down beside her.
"Erm, Khushi, I er… I think you should go and change into something you'll find more comfortable."
Khushi looked up, the veil still covering her face.
"But it's tradition that I spend my first night in my bridal attire."
"But it's not comfortable. Go and get changed, no one will say anything."
"Are you sure Arnav ji?"
"Yeah."
Khushi nodded and then slowly and carefully got off the bed. She went to where her two little bags were and opened the first one and pulled out her pink cotton salwar kameez. She then walked to the bathroom and shut the door behind her.
Arnav pulled his sharwani off and got into his track bottoms and hit t-shirt. He then sat on the bed. He was now married, a married man. He was married to a girl he's never seen before, never spoken to before, didn't know anything about.
Arranged marriages. Who in the world invented such a stupid thing? It was pathetic. How could someone expect him to just marry and live with a girl he knew nothing about? Arnav ran his hand through his slick black hair and lay down.
After about half an hour the bathroom door opened and Khushi walked out. Arnav got up and tried to smile, but he realised he failed.
"Are you ok?"
"Yes, thank you. Just was a bit of a challenge to get all the jewellery and then lengha off."
"Well it's late now and we've both had a long day, we should go to sleep."
Khushi nodded in agreement. She was glad that he didn't expect anything to happen between them.
Arnav lay down again and Khushi looked confused. Arnav got up again.
"What's the matter?"
"Where should I?"
"On the bed!"
"But…"
"Khushi, we're married, we can share a bed can't we?"
Khushi thought and then nodded. She didn't like idea of sharing a bed with a stranger, but this stranger was her husband. She slowly made her way to the bed and then got up and lay down. Arnav too lay down beside her. He switched the lights off and then lay down, shutting his eyes.
An hour or so passed and in all that time, all Khushi had been doing was toss and turning. Arnav too couldn't get to sleep. Arnav sighed and turned to face Khushi.
"What's the matter?"
"I can't get to sleep."
"Should I get you anything? Hot chocolate maybe?"
"No thank you Arnav ji. I was thinking, maybe we could just talk for a while."
"Yeah, ok."
Khushi looked around, not knowing what to talk about. Then Arnav spoke.
"Are you really only 19?"
"Yes, I am. Why?"
"It's just, not many girls you're age agree to get married so soon."
"I didn't really want to, but I had no choice really. It was either I married you and lived with your lovely family, or stay there where I had been hated all my life."
"Yes, di had said you'd had a hard time. Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not really."
"Alright then."
"Anjali ma'am said you're 24."
"Yeah, I am."
"How come you agreed to marry me? I mean you're THE Arnav Singh Raizada, all the girls love you. Why did you want to marry me?"
"Well I guess Nani and Di liked you, so I thought I might as well. They're everything to me and I would do anything to make them happy."
Khushi looked away and Arnav decided that he should tell her the truth about his feelings.
"Khushi, look, we've both got married, not because we want to, but because we felt that we needed to. I understand you don't see me as your husband yet and I can't accept you as my wife. Khushi can we be friends, we should start our relationship from somewhere."
Khushi nodded.
"I'd like that."
She smiled and then looked away. She couldn't help but feeling a warm feeling within her. She had never had a proper friend before. Her only friend had been…
She didn't want to think about that. She didn't want to think about her past. There was too much pain there. Pain, which didn't need to be remembered. This was her new life and she wanted to make the most of it.
