Hello all. This story has been giving me sleepless nights for sometime now and had made me write it down and pushed me to share it with you all. I am not a writer per se, so ignore any minor errors. Constructive criticizm is always welcome :)
Chapter One
The coolness of the window tingled the insides of her palm as she looked into the dusky sky of Seattle. The sky had a shade of dark purple, a velvety softness in the texture as she trained her eyes towards the sky from 27th floor of her apartments. The cool breeze that whispered in her ear reminded her of his rich velvety voice whispering sweet nothings in her ear, holding her close in the mornings, when she snuggled closer to him seeking his warmth. The darkening sky reminded her of his dark eyes that looked directly into her eyes whenever he spoke, which had always enchanted her. The cold glass against her palm reminded her of his cold lips that always tingled her skin, making her lose herself in the bliss that is his love.
Everything she saw today reminded him to her, and every minute without him had increased the immeasurable feeling of pain in her heart. She hugged her form closer as her forehead rested against the glass now and looked into the night sky again.
It was not the first time he had been away from her. It was a part of their jobs, and it was what they were doing ever since they had kept their foot in the corporate world, it was a part of their life even before they had known each other.
Then why, why now, why today was she feeling a sudden sensation in her stomach, a sudden hollowness in her heart, a restlessness that was in her body which suffocated her all the more with ever passing second? Why?
She closed her tired eyes as a tear drop rolled down from the corner of her eyes. She opened her eyes and touched the salty water on her cheek in wonder. She had been crying, and just because she was missing him?
The thought bought a smile on her lips as she remembered his parting words a week back.
"Make sure you don't miss me too much because if you do then lord save you when I am back. Because when I am back'" his voice lowered a notch and he whispered in her ear "'I would make up for all the separation, and then you shouldn't complain I don't let you sleep at all"
She had hit him on his chest then, embarrassed as she was, wondering if his PA, who was standing not too far away had heard them.
He had pulled her into his embrace then, not considering the presence of his employees beside him, and kissed her hair before his hands worked their way up and pulled the clip away, bringing her wavy hair down to her shoulders, like always.
When he pulled away from the hug, he kissed on her cheek and whispered "Till I am back this'll be my lucky charm" and showing her hair clip, he pushed it in his shirt pocket and patted it.
She smiled remembering his departure a week back to Chicago on a business deal, and how he had took off another of her clips from her leaving her open haired on her business attire in the airport.
Her hands moved up removing her hair band opening her bun, bringing her hair down, like he always liked.
Even in his absence his thoughts had always filled her heart with warmth, and though he wasn't here right now to lock her in his embrace, he would be here soon, his flight was due in the very night and he would be the first thing she would see the next morning.
She brightened up as she opened her blazer and dropped it in the loveseat in her living room and got tidying up kitchen, wanting to bake something. Switching on her answering machine, she got back to her cabinet and skimmed through the recipes to cook something special for him. She knew he would be hungry by the time he would be back and she wanted to do something special for him.
Smiling, she decided to make three of his favorite dishes. She listened to the voice mails of her close friends and relatives reminding her of the weddings and gatherings they need to attend this week.
When she was making scrambled eggs, had come a message from the answering machine which had made her freeze to the floor.
"Khushi"
She heard the rich velvety voice and turned around with her spatula in her hand looking at the device with her eyes filled.
"I have two surprises for you," she heard his voice now, which was filled with mirth.
She made her way to the device and kneeled beside it and touched it gently, as if that would allow her to caress the contours of his face.
"While the first one is that we have the deal signed, the second one is'" his voice drawled and she waited with her hand still on the device, as if caressing his voice. "'I am coming home Khushi. Actually I would step down into the city by the time you would listen to this message. So go and sleep to all your heart's content because you won't get any for the next one week. You realize you had haunted my dreams and left me sleepless for one whole week. Now it's your turn."
As the message ended with his deep chuckle, she closed her mouth with her palm as happy tears rolled out of her eyes inconspicuously.
Her spatula lay forgotten beside her as she felt the tears that poured out of her eyes flow freely as happiness overwhelmed her. Arnav, her husband was coming home, and she would see him in no time.
When it finally sunk in, she rose on her knees and opened the drawer of her table and pulled out the small white thing and held it in her hand that had her world turned since the afternoon. The pregnancy test kit lay in her palm showing two bright pink strips showing her test results which said positive.
After seven years of wait to have a baby, after seven years of tears and prayers, she was pregnant.
She looked at the picture on the table taken on their wedding day, which had their smiling faces staring back at her. She touched her husband's reflection as she mumbled "I too have a surprise for you Arnav. Come home soon"
