If there is an alien written into the story, an actor steps in by wearing a mask or prosthetic or CGI, because of course they cant cast 'real' aliens. If there is a role for twins, then an actor steps in n does both the roles. Rarely we see real twins playing the lead roles.

We have seen Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button, from a ripe old man to his early teens. In hairspray, I was shocked to see John Travolta in mother's role, because I spent half the time thinking the actor looked familiar, but unable to realize it was him.

Amir convincingly played as an engineering student when he was in his forties. Similarly Srk was convincing as a twenty something in JTHJ, even though I disliked the movie. AB also joined the league by playing an over-sized child in Paa.

In short, an actor's job is to convince us in whatever role he is playing. My question is, with the present technology, and prosthetic make up, is it ok for an actor to choose a role that does not reflect his real age. For ex, Can Sr. AB act as a college student if he could convince us he is a teenager after donning extensive make up? And Rekha as his teenage girlfriend 😛???. We have seen many actors playing a 70 yr old when they are actually in their twenties or thirties. Why can't it be the other way round?

In south, until almost two decades ago it was possible. I remember watching Sr. NTR (a veteran telugu actor) playing a college student in his sixties. Trust me, it was horrendous to see a visibly old man in bell bottom pants, carrying books, and romancing his classmate. But now, with the advancement in makeup techniques, one can easily mask one's real age. So, is it okay to play a teen as long as they can convince us with their performance? If not, where should an actor draw the line?

An actor's job is to perform, whether it is an opposite gender, or age, or different timeline. It's not a reality show after all. But why do we get so repulsive when we see an old actor playing young roles??

P.S... The only person I have accepted without any qualms is Rajnikanth Tongue Tongue... I find his movies entertaining... he's better than all other mindless comedy movies that I watch.

I disagree with that statement :P I was cringing at the fact that he thought he could pass off as being a 20-something when...he couldn't.

I think there is an extent to which you can mask stuff with makeup. Sure you can look maybe 10-odd years younger, but your body will give away your real age.

You are probably right... JTHJ was a snooze fest, and I fell asleep a few times, and caught up with the movie whenever my cousin nudged me to wake up.. 😛

I am just trying to understand why is it a turn off for almost everyone whenever an old actor try to pass off as a young man, but not the other way round. Their jeans fitting, or lack of one, that bothers me the most. 😕

If they are convincing about it, I don't see the problem - but the older you get the harder it is to convince the audience that you are 20-something because your body starts to give away your age.

Take Cocktail for example - Saif didn't convince me of his role, and honestly I didn't like his chemistry with Diana either.
Also there is a whole lot of good, young talent that's come into Bollywood, that would make these roles more convincing, so I don't see the point in Shah Rukh, Salman, Saif etc continuing to play the cliche heroes..
I would actually prefer for them to use the talent that they've got over the many years in Bollywood and do good films that will highlight their talent more :)

I would blame the movie makers. They are cashing in on the star's popularity to make their movie a hit. They know these folks have loyal fans.. and these fans want to see their favorite actors in lead roles.
Would these fans be happy if SRK or Salman did Ram Kapoor's role in SOTY? We need more non-romance movies.

As for South Indian films, I just refuse to watch such movies. Watching Mohanlal making seductive faces at a 20 year old made me want to puke! But if you go on YT, you can see his fans defending him. I had a friend who was in love with Chiranjeevi, who used to start blushing every time she talked about him, so yeah .. she loved seeing him act with actresses her age!

The only one I could watching romancing younger females was Sean Connery!

I don't understand why movie makers don't prefer the younger actors.. there is so much fresh talent out there! And fans should accept that its time for their stars to give up their roles to younger actors! But who am I kidding .. 😛

I just hope 20 years down the lane, we don't have to watch SRK with his arms wide open in a field, waiting for Kajol's daughter to run into his arms!

Maybe if he could do movies like Chak De .. and leave the romancing to the younger ones?

acting is a job where looks and youth are highly preferred, because looking good is the most important thing. We see actors in their 40s getting lead roles in hw all the time ,but truth to be told, they look good and also a 40 yr old guy does not try to pass off as a 20 yr old .

End of the day, there is a limit to make believe. I think lead roles can be made age appropriate. the problem is, in India, the majority contribution to movie watchers were youth, hence people even in their mid 30s could not relate to the college school romances going on, and most movies used to be youth centric and boy love girl stories. However, with changing times, fortunately, adult people, their lives, lives outside college life is also potrayed. I would have no problem if a 50 yr old guy tries to play a 38 yr old guy in some suitable role, if he looks like it. modern prosthetics can do it. But if you want a 60 yr old guy as a romancing college lover, then please use him as voice actor in cartoon or those stop gap animation movies, where a actors face and real like body movements are captured into animation( much like the movie bewoulf )

The question that keeps on troubling me is that why do actors have a longer time-span in Bollywood? The actresses have shorter time-span in cinema world. More expectations are laid on the shoulders of a heroine to look good and sexy even if she is hones no acting skills. Yes we do have actresses like Vidya Balan too who are taking the cinema world to new heights despite not being as sexy as Katrina but still a lot is to be done.

Madhuri Dixit bombed in Bollywood post her return but she's rocking on small screen while Amitabh B. is still rocking on big screen. There are no doubts that both are talented people then why is there this difference? Hema M. is not given as many roles as AB!!

SRK in the shoes of a 26 year guy in Jab tak... was hard to digest. There are fresh actors who should be given such kinda roles.

The moment a heroine becomes a mother she's no longer accepted in young roles on the Big screen.

Makeup can change your looks to an extent but the facts about the actors age keep on ringing some bells in the mind of audience.

Cinema is becoming stagnant in matter of casting new actors. While the waters are over-flowing in case of heroine casting. 😆

From actor's perspective.. this is his livelihood, he would do whatever he gets and as per his needs and choices..

We audience, are the consumers..

This is a simple commerical consumer-manufacturer-product debate..the way i see it..

Product- actor, consumer- you, manufactuerer- film world..

If you don't accept an old actor in young avatar, eventually people will stop casting them..if you do.. they will ocntinue casting..if you accept only a few ( who are gr8 performers and can convince).. then only those few would get recurring opportunties..

Don't think there is a moral choice here..

its a seller - buyer market..

The problem here is that the consumer(audience) is a male dominated society. Men in 40's are playing heroes and romancing heroines who are in their 20's.

In our society younger women are preferred by men for marriage, for romancing etc. etc. than woman of your own age or elder to you.
