Many of our indian actors/actresses have several methods they use while acting. Style, Impressionism, Realism and many more. But which one is better? Does style influence the audience more than an actor that portrays real people and uses realism to conduct his acting? When we remember our favorite scenes from Sholay, do we think of the personality and style of gabbar singh ("kitne aadmi the") or are the realistic characters like amitabh and dharmendar more memorable for us? Is an actor's style more appealing or is it the way they represent real people more appealing?

I think it depends on the demand of the story and viewer's personal choice ofcourse! It is a pleasure to watch Shreyas Talpade as a simple guy iqbal rise and shine, who doesn't say "wassupppp!! / dude / wear abercrombie & fitch". however, zayed khan's character in the movie "main hoon na" suited all the above. There is parallel cinema and there are blockbusters such as Dhoom. There are style icons and trend-setters, while there are your simple actors that depict "you and your life" on screen and touch your heart. - Konkana Sensharma in Mr. & Mrs. Iyyer . Who appeals, depends on what the movie is about.

The same actress Kareena Kapoor can be a brilliant sad realistic Chameli as well as irritating dramatic Poo in KKKG!

Would a realistic Zayed Khan in Main hoo na / realistic simple Poo do the needful for the movies they acted in? perhaps not. Simple is great, simple is brilliant, but does it have mass appeal? Konkana Sensharma is superb as Mrs. Iyyer, but how would Mrs Iyyer fair as Sunehri in Dhoom 2?

"Realism was a style of theatre established before the turn of the 20th Century that attempted to put the theory of naturalism into practice. It looked at putting 'a slice of life' onstage. Realism focuses upon method acting, which means the actors became the characters, and creating a piece of theatre that rings true of life itself"

I find it very appealing and a true test of an actor. Yet, I appreciate its limitations. A realistic Baburao Apte may not make Herapheri so funny! Sometimes, drama is necessary. The same actor was very realistic and brilliant as Sardar Patel in Sardar !

Well.. you are right. it wasn't exactly very stylish to say "egggggjactly!" .. but we all remember Javed Jaffrey from Salaam Namaste. In fact, eventually, he'll be remembered more than the lead characters perhaps 😆 . However, we also remember Mrs Iyyer and Iqbal although they did not have a catchy phrase to cash on!

I prefer people who act by getting under the skin of the role...

Actors like Naseerrudin Shah and Shabana Aazmi in the yester years have done that...and it wasnt just in the so called parallel cinema...even when they acted in a "commercial film" like Massom...never for a minute did you feel it was Naseer or Shabana on the screen...it was always this couple....belonging to the high- middle Delhi society...

But look at say Shahrukh Khan....its always him that u see on screen...it was SRK in DDLJ, Veer Zarra, KKHH, etc etc..heck I dont even remember the names of his characters ...

Unfortunately with Amitabh too...his screen presence as a star always overshadowed the actor in him...maybe he was never courageous enough to do a" parallel" role..
AB and SRK havent even experimented enough with their looks to play a part...

I could go on and on but I think I'll put a stop to my ramblings for the time being! 😛

PS: one actor who has really impressed me in the recent times is Konkona Sen Sharma...from the pg3 journo to teh village belle in Omkara...she's damn versatile and good too!!👏

your rite an actor's presence on screen shud never overpower their acting , because then wat is the point??? i feel that amitabh and shahrukh have been overrated because they hv become some of the most popular kids in bollywood that its hard for the audience to resist their style and concentrate on their acting. but somewhere for shahrukh khan it seems he combines his style with his realness, which is good for him 👏

I do not know much about acting but the terms I have heard being thrown around are methodist vr improv actors (DeNero vs Jim Carrey)
It is said that id Denero is playinf a firefighter, he even goes to the length of finding out the brand of underwears the firefighters wear. Hoffman actually assisted in an Autopsy before taking role of Doctor in Outbreak. Most roles Jim Carry plays have no rolemodel in reality. There is a time and a role for each style though. Carry was brilliant as riddler in the Batman movie...something Hoffman could not have ppulled off.
There are also overstated and understated performances. Sometimes overstated performances are called for...and good actors pull them off without making it look overacting...like Gabbar or Mughambo or Bhikhu Matre. (not necessarily always villinous roles). Well rounded actosr like Amitabh can do everything from understated to overstated...but even they can end up lookind shoddy from time to time.
I should shut up now. I have already written more about acting than I know.

yes ure rite, immpressionism is in painting , sorry!

overstated or understated goes with the type of role and usually many roles r meant to introduce style but there r roles, like in black rani was an amazingly brilliant portray of realism and i think portraying realism is much harder than style but they r equally memorable
