Slowly they are introducing layers to the story. Today they have told us about some court case going on and how Uma ben has been fighting it and helping to keep the fortunes of the family. She saved the Borasagar family from destitution. This can partially explain Uma ben's overbearing attitude, her over protectiveness, as well as why her family looks up to her and obeys her almost blindly.
"Almost"because they have also shown everyone are not entirely truthful to Uma ben, they just let her believe that.
This also explains why Uma ben feels dowry is OK, because the sale of land, which she got as gift from her father at her wedding, helped her family during financial crisis. This crisis could be the reason why she so status conscious and touchy about what society and her community thinks of her and her family.

Hope they bring more complexity to story and characterization as show progresses. People are products of their circumstances and life experiences.

I agree with you ... Today's episode had a certain finesse in it and the story a good balance.

Agreed. I like how they're showing Umaben as not just a plain negative character. She truly cares about her family and she wants what's best for them but because she's been brought up in a whole different atmosphere, she thinks her principles are right. She's not an evil character.

True.
Uma ben is an intriguing figure and being played well by Supriya Pathak.

I liked knowing about this further aspect of UB's character, it somehow makes her more relatable. I think the cvs have mada a concious effort to make her a lighter shade of grey than she seemed to be in the first couple of episodes I hope they will also give Chhan Chhan layers rather than just make her into a goody two shoes. My favorite CC characteristic was when she had a little hissy fit at the temple being opened for UB and Simple had to convince her to get prashad. I don't want CC to be 'perfect' I hope they will show her to have flaws like any normal girl.

I agree with you, ChhanChhan will be interesting if she also has certain flaws, certain quirks. Hoping they work on that.
