"I was told I wouldn't last five years"
Ironically, success has never crossed his mind. But then, Aamir Khan is an actor with an unconventional approach. Following his gut obviously paid off and Khan is not only among the top actors the industry has today but is celebrating a silver jubilee – his film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, was released 25 years ago on April 29,1988. The movie, which also featured Juhi Chawla, set Khan on the road to super stardom and he's never looked back.
Khan began his career as a child artiste with Nasir Hussain's Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Madhosh. He made his acting debut with Ketan Mehta's Holi. But he went unnoticed till his next film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which he was offered by Mansoor Khan.
Among Khan's best work are films like Dil, Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots. He is just not a successful actor but also a successful producer and director, and a professional who believes in social work, which he proved with his TV show Satyamev Jayate.
The actor, who is shooting for Dhoom 3, took time out his busy schedule to chat with the media, without whom he says he couldn't have reached the hearts of his audience. Over to Aamir Khan…
Success never crosses my mind
I never thought I would be star and be successful. I believe in doing what I feel is right and I follow my heart. The two qualities that have brought me to this point are a passion and madness for cinema. But these qualities could be dangerous and backfire. I am ziddi and emotional but I never work with success in mind.
On completing 25 years
I am happy and surprised to complete 25 years in the industry. When I was new, I was not aware of how my career would shape up. I was told an actor's life lasts five years as the public gets bored with them after that.
One film at a time
My mantra of doing one film at a time has been questioned by many people in the industry. I remember being told that I would be out of this industry very soon due to this approach. I was told that my method was not right. People had lashed out at me because of the way I work. But that didn't deter me and I followed what my heart said.
Thankful to my colleagues
It is quite surprising that I have completed so many years in the industry. It seems like I started yesterday! I want to thank my family, friends, writers, directors, technicians, co-stars and everyone, not to forget my fans and God for their never-ending love and support.
On Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
I am happy that the film has completed 25 years. We are having a small get-together with family, close friends and associates related to the film. First, we will watch the film and then sit and eat, recollect the old days and have some fun. I still remember the first day of my shoot; it will always remain with me.
I learn from mistakes
I have made a lot of mistakes in my career and have unsuccessful films to my credit. But I have always learnt from my mistakes as they pushed me to do better and evolve as an actor and as a person. I don't regret doing any of the films I've done as the experience has taught me a lot. I am not afraid to walk a path that one rarely walks; I am not afraid to take risks.
