Chapter-9

"His pathological reports confirm hypersensitivity reaction to a medication "bactrim" he was given to treat his pneumonia" Dr. Behl was apprising Ashutosh about findings of the pathological test of the patient Nidhi had diagnosed with SJS syndrome.

Ashutosh: Thank you Dr. Behl, and with that Dr. Behl leaves giving a concerned look and a tentative smile to Nidhi who was coming in. Nidhi was feeling anxious at the turn of events, not sure how he is going to react. Fearing the things may turn bad and expecting at the same time that she'll be able to hold out well. Malika was also present in Ashutosh's cabin, seeing her coming in Ashutosh calls the ward boy and orders:

"Make sure no body disturbs us... the ward boy nods and leaves the cabin and Ashutosh turns to Malika, "Dr. Malika please if you don't mind" indicating her to leave them alone.

Malika: Dr. Ashutosh please she is new in the hospital and... before she could complete he gives her a look that she didn't dare to utter a word further and left the cabin quietly. An unusual quiet prevailed in the cabin for sometime when he finally turns his back towards her and asks: "what is going on Dr. Nidhi?" she had no answer...they're alone and he was addressing her as Dr. Nidhi. When he didn't hear anything in response he asks "May I ask where were you?" she again had no answer she knew she took some extra minutes to come to his cabin due to the sudden shock. Sounding a bit agitated he asks one more question: "where is your phone?" hearing that her hands search for the phone in her robe and when she checks she finds ten missed calls and three sms' from him. The sms' were..."Where are you?"... "Missing you like hell"..."I just want to hear from you...where are you?" He felt she was checking her phone and remained silent waiting for her to answer. She knew he was angry and had every right to be but she was finding it hard even to utter a word. The messages moisten her eyes. She felt overwhelmed. Then a thought strikes her and she answers his sms' the answer to first one..." In Dr. Heartstone's heart" He was in no mood but after a few minutes he checks his phone. Seeing sms from her he frowns a bit and reads the message that smothered his anger. Then she answer's the second one..."I don't know how much I missed you but I know I felt alone when everyone was around and I hated being alone"... his anger melted she heard a sigh. He turns looking at her waiting for her to answer his third sms but she raises her hands without meeting his eyes and holds her ear lobes to express her sorry. She was looking very cute and he found hard controlling himself... smiling at her he walks up to her and takes her hands and kisses them. Standing very close to her he asks in a very soft voice, "You missed me" her eyes at floor she answers in a yes nodding her head. "Then why is it I didn't see any call on my cell when I came out from OT...then why is it I didn't receive any call from you since morning...why you didn't answer my calls and..and my sms'...you know how worried I was when you didn't answer my calls...my sms'...why?"

Nidhi: I came here to meet you yesterday when my shift ended...you're busy with accident cases in ICU...I waited for your call whole evening...and whole night...I called hospital in the mid-night and enquired about you...you're still here..I put my phone on silent mode...I thought you might call...then I forgot to change...my...ph...she stutters and falters uttering her words when he places her hands on his shoulders and locks his hand behind her waist locking her in his arms maintaining a space between their bodies "where were you since morning?"

Her breath gets caught she could hardly utter... "early morning I thought to let you have some rest and then I got busy with the patient here and..and"

Ashutosh: his voice turns husky "and you forgot me"

Nidhi: "No!!! I'm sorry"

Ashutosh: "I missed you badly and I got scared when you didn't answer my call...two hours Nidhi...two whole hours" He closes in and Nidhi's heart skips a beat

Nidhi: "please" she tries to move a bit away "we're in your cabin"

Ashutosh: still in his husky voice... I hope you heard what I ordered when you came in...nobody can disturb us. Nidhi's heart was thumping as he had his eyes glued on her...their thumping hearts were the only sound reverberating in the cabin. After some time he opens his arms to end her unease and takes her hands in his hands kisses them and utters:

Love! I'll have to go...I've patients to check this moment...but I want to say a few things...first and foremost...you can call on my phone any time...I repeat...any time you wish...you have every right to... I don't like you to ask others about the one you own...about the one you only should be knowing...and I'll try as much as possible to keep you informed...she asks: "but I think you leave your phone here when you go to perform surgery"

Ashutosh: "You don't have to worry about that in fact you don't have to worry about anything I'll take care of that. And yes we'll try as much as possible not to mingle our professional and personal lives?

"She nods"

Ashutosh: "And you won't come here'...not so often... not until it really becomes necessary"

She frowns a bit

Ashutosh: " I'll explain that later...and yes one more thing...very important...she looks at him...you'll miss me" she lowers her eyes...he taps his forehead with hers...Look at me...please...Love...just one look..nidhi was blushing and he was losing himself, their hearts were thumping but he managed to control himself after sometime giving gentle squeeze to her hands he releases her hand. Okay! Got to go... she was yet in her dazed state and he was smiling but his heart was aching in that sweet quivering ache...he sighs...Love I forgot I bought something for you yesterday, take that...thatz in my jacket...okay? She only manages to nod. Shall I leave? She answers again in a nod...and he leaves. She calms herself moves to check his jacket hanging on a hanger and finds a fruit and nut chocolate...she smiles and leaves his cabin but the moment she came out she puts a serious look on her face and moves towards pediatric ward.

Nidhi was in the common room having lunch but her mind was occupied thinking about him she really didn't understand why she was forbidden to visit his cabin. Is he scared about the reaction of the world to their relationship...he definitely has many insecurities though he seems very strong and dogmatic as a man like him could be, but deep inside him he is like a child who got peeved feeling I didn't care for him. He craves for the love and care he hasn't got in his life...his orphan childhood is still haunting him. Her thought process got disturbed when she was joined by Dr. Ahana, Dr. Priyanka, Dr. Jyotika and others. All were concerned for her and every one was curious to know about Dr. Heartstone's reaction, the moment they saw her there, all voiced their concern asking "What did he say?"..."Are you Okay?"..."How you faced his anger?" that brought a little smile to her face but she managed to suppress the smile...when he is all love for her how can she get scared at his rage. She only managed to say... no he wasn't as bad as I thought him to be seeing his anger...I think...I was lucky that Dr. Behl was already there with the reports that proved my assumptions and owing to the findings I think his anger got subdued. He didn't reprimand but just told me to follow the hospital protocol. All the colleagues took a sigh of relief and she felt hard controlling her giggle.

The day passed and it's at 2 pm when she received a sms..."I've a surgery to perform not sure how much time it'll take...miss me" on reading miss me a smile forms on her face. After a few minutes she receives a call..."where are you?"

Nidhi:"I was in ICU to check the boy now I'm on my way back to ward"

Ashutosh:"Good! walk slowly"

Nidhi: "what? why?"

Ashutosh:"because I'm on my way to OT"

Nidhi: "So?

Ashutosh: "So what?" and she saw him passing by...he gave her a look that seemed quite somber'."I needed a glimpse I got...Bye" and hung up the phone. She was looking at her phone with awe...she shakes her head...she loved the quivering happiness she felt every time he showered his love on her. Her shift ended at three and she was leaving when she saw Rohan coming in. She was surprised to see him...you here!

Rohan: Yes I am here for two days...I reached here early morning and thought to finish my job first so that I can have free time to spend with you all.

Nidhi: Okay!!! Let us go home first.

Rohan: Fine! They were on their way to home when Rohan asked surprising her: why do I feel you have changed.

Nidhi: Changed how come

Rohan: I don't know...I can see something in your eyes but... I'm not able to comprehend.

Nidhi: Really!!! then she ponders do her eyes really reveal her heart and soul is brimming with...Let us call Anji.

Rohan calls Anji and she was already at her mother's place...they rushed to home and soon the verma's and solanki's were at solanki house. After a normal chit-chat...Rohan and Mr. Solanki played badminton, Anji and Nidhi were busy babbling and Dadi Bua and Mrs Solanki started dinner preparations...Dr. Rangnath was also invited for the dinner. Col. Verma also joins them after he was back from work. They were having tea laughing at a joke cracked by Rohan when Nidhi receives a call from him. She got up to answer her call saying a call from hospital and moved out.

Nidhi: Hello! Ashutosh: How are you?

Nidhi: Fine! Howz Surgery? Ashutosh: Everything went well...can I see you?

Nidhi: what? Ashutosh: I'm missing you...I want to see you... please.

Nidhi: well...actually...I'm at Anji's house...Anji and Dr. Rangnath are also here...Aunty has invited us for dinner...so it'll be difficult to...he cuts her.. "No..Itz Okay...actually I'm going out tomorrow to check that patient...you remember the VIP... I operated upon"

Nidhi: Yes Ashutosh: I may have to leave early in the morning so we won't be able to meet. Tomorrow you're having off and I had a plan to spend a day with you. Nidhi could sense his disappointment and she tries to cheer him up

Nidhi: We can meet...may be in the evening. She heard a knock on his door Ashutosh: Aah! Someone on door... Can I call you late at night? Nidhi: Hmn

Ashutosh: Bye, my love. When she turns to get inside she saw Rohan on her back with his eyebrows raised. "Whatz going on?" "Whoz he?"

Nidhi: who? I told that's a call from hospital.

Rohan: yeah and "we can meet in the evening"...I give you five minutes otherwise I'm going to scream out "Dr. Nidhi is meeting someone tomorrow evening"

Nidhi: So whatz wrong in that can't I meet anyone..Eh?

Rohan: I have no problem if that person is just anyone and I'm amazed that 'anyone' has the power to light up your eyes...and then I find a slight blush...and I'm sure it was for this anyone you're constantly checking your phone.

Nidhi: Rohan!!! Rohan:Whoz he? Nidhi: Dr. Ashutosh Rohan: So he is a doctor. Where? at KGH? Hey wait a sec...the famous neurosurgeon?

Nidhi: yeah...but how do you know him?

Rohan: Hmn...I've not seen him but I have heard about him and you remember when my grand mother had some nerve related health issues...it took us one month to get an appointment and the great part is he has cured her...he is the best Nidhi...but he must be...

Nidhi: yes I know what you want to say...he is older than me...we've difference of fourteen years in our ages but I love him Rohan and he loves me too. Nidhi was waiting for his reaction and he was reading her too when after pondering sometime he said

"Nidhi what is important in any relation is love if he loves you, cares for you, and if he can keep you happy all your life what else do I need? If my friend is happy I'm happy. Age is just a number and I've heard he is a very handsome guy.

She nods shyly: That he is...very handsome... He gives her a side hug "I'm happy Nidhi".

Ashutosh was very tired when he reaches home he just plops himself in the couch in his living room; throws his jacket on one side when Hiraman comes with a glass of water... "Ashu beta you seem to be very tired" "Yes kaka where is Baba?" Baba was coming out of his room when he walks upto him and puts his hand on his head and speaks "I'm here Ashu...How was your day...Why are you so tired?"

Ashutosh: Baba you know those accident victims they kept me on my toes...nothing else.

Baba: Hmn...You go and change...have dinner and take some rest.

Ashutosh goes and freshens himself up and comes out for a dinner. He was having dinner when his all curious Baba tries to make his son confess his love.

Baba: Ashutosh I think beta you should marry now...I've decided on this and I think Malika is the perfect girl...Kyun Hiraman.

HK: Yes Dr. Sahab I love her she is a very sweet girl. She'll take care of this house and our son as well.

Baba: Hmn..So you too think shez the perfect girl...Nice I'll go tomorrow and talk to his brother.

Ashutosh: Baba I'm tired here and you are...you are too much Baba???

Baba: What too much? How long Hiraman is going to take care of us...Itz high time...this house needs a woman...who can take care of this house...and more how long we are going to live...you need to settle down in your life...and no matter how much you deny I know you are in love and who else that could be...you don't know any other girl...I'll go tomorrow and talk to Malika's brother...and I don't think he'll have any objection to this relation..I think Malika is also interested I've seen in her eyes...you get the Shagun ready Hiraman...this is decided now I'm going there tomorrow.

Ashutosh: What is this Baba? You can't force me for a marriage...You never did...now why suddenly...all this ...I don't understand.

Baba: Yes Ashu I've understood my mistake...I'd have done this long back...every time you denied...I accepted. How long? How long you are going to stay like this? No not done...I too want to see my grand children now.

Ashutosh: I'm not going to marry and not to Malika...let me make this very clear.

Baba: Okay! Okay! You don't want to marry her...I've another girl for you...shez also a doctor... you are going to meet her tomorrow. Hiraman..get the phone..I'll tell her father...he's a very good friend of mine...tomorrow he is going to meet her...I don't want to waste a single moment now.

Ashutosh: Come on Baba...you are behaving like a child...I'm not going to meet her.

Baba: you are not going to meet her...you are not going to marry Malika...then what? Or you've decided not to marry at all?

Ashutosh: I never said that...that lights up baba's face ,in all these years this is for the first time he hasn't denied.

Baba: then what? How long you are going to wait? When are you going to marry? After you retirement? You've to give me answer now... else I'm going to fix you marriage with that girl.

Ashutosh: Raising his eyebrows...Is that some sort of a black mailing? I'm your son Baba and I understand well why you are doing all this.

Baba: If you understand then why you are doing this to your father...tell me the truth please beta...baba gets emotional...I never forced you all these years but now I really feel you'd get settled how long I'm going to be with you.

Ashutosh: Baba please. Don't say so...he gets up and gives him a hug...I can't live without you...his eyes were moist...yes Baba I love someone... happy? Baba screams in joy...I knew it..I knew it. Ashutosh shaking his head sits again to have his dinner...he could see the light his declaration has brought on the faces of Baba and Hiraman.

Baba: Whoz she? Whoz she? Tell me I'm going to meet her father? Does she work in KGH? Malika must be knowing her?

Ashutosh: Please Baba...not so fast...Itz not that easy...yes she works in KGH but no one knows about this not even Malika...so please don't discuss this with anyone...not till she decides..let her do the way she wants to do...I mean we have just confessed some three days back baba...itz too early.

Baba: How long you are going to take now with that? Talk to her.

Ashutosh: Itz not that easy Baba...a frown forms on Ashutosh's face...She is fourteen years...younger than me Baba. I don't know how her family is going to take this all. So we'll have to wait for her. Baba takes a sigh places his hand on Ashutosh's hand conveying everything will be fine and utters with child like desire...I want to see her...she must be very pretty..bring her here someday...or I can come to KGH to see her...please?

Ashutosh: I'll bring her here Baba...and his phone rings...he answers his phone "can I call you after ten minutes I'm having dinner?" and hangs up. Baba was all smiling he understood who the caller was but kept mum and thanked god for bestowing his son with happiness and asked a silent prayer for their relationship.

Ashutosh after having dinner and settling himself in the bed...calls her which she answers instantly indicating she was waiting for his call...when she said Hello! Ashutosh took a deep breath and asked: Howz my love? She answers in a "hmnn"

Ashutosh: Whatz this hmn? What does that mean? Nidhi: Had your dinner?

Ashutosh: Yes and you? Nidhi: hmn...you must be very tired.

Ashutosh: Yes...I was but now feeling better some one's soft voice is soothing and comforting me.

Nidhi: Can I ask a question? Ashutosh: You still need permission?

Nidhi: Why did you say I shouldn't come to meet you in your cabin?

Ashutosh: Yes I wanted to discuss that with you...you know I don't want people to know about our relationship not till our families know and approve of. I don't care about such things but I don't want people to talk and gossip about us and you know...when I say you belong to me I mean it in every respect...I won't like anyone to speculate and guess about our relationship seeing us intimately talking to each other...I hope you understand what I mean...I won't bear if anyone says anything against you...I'll rip that person apart...I can't bear that..never...you are my honour...I protect and I care for... I believe in self respect and I respect US. I've always respected everyone's personal space and I've not trespassed anyone's boundaries neither do I like anyone to trespass mine nor will I allow or give a chance to anyone. I've always balanced my work and personal life effectively. Infact I've never shared my personal life with anyone other than you, Baba and Arman.

Nidhi: Arman?

Ashutosh: Hmn..my childhood buddy a fashion designer lives in Mumbai.

Nidhi: Whoz the real Ashutosh the one I know or Dr. Heartstone. Infact the one you know is new to me as well. I haven't seen and known him before. You know long before I don't remember whether I've heard or read somewhere that "a man is not as world knows him when he is with his woman". The way you know me no one else can. You have me on my knees who else has that power. Nidhi giggles

Ashutosh: Laugh as much as you can Dr. Nidhi!...I've bowed down.

Nidhi: Sorry Sir...he laughs at that... and what was that chocolate for?

Ashutosh: A gift for some one you love!

Nidhi: How do you know fruit and nut dark chocolate is my favourite?

Ashutosh: I saw you buying that many times.

Nidhi: What!!! You used to follow me.

Ashutosh: Laughing out loud! How many times you bought that at a shop near hospital?

Nidhi: hmn..Sheepishly'... I sometimes have a craving for chocolates and noodles.

Ashutosh: Like I have for you. She finds hard to say anything in response when they remain silent for sometime he breaks the silence by asking her huskily...Love please say something.

Nidhi: I think you should take rest now you've to leave early in the morning.

Ashutosh: Feeling sleepy? Nidhi: No I want you to take rest...You're tired...please.

Ashutosh: taking a deep breath...Okay! Nidhi: Goodnight!

Ashutosh: hmn' Nidhi: Goodnight!

Ashutosh: hmn'

Nidhi: Goood night!!! I'm going to hang up now but she couldn't she hears a sigh...they remain silent holding their phones when Ashutosh breaks the silence: Love...Goodnight! She responds saying good night and hangs up.

Early morning Ashutosh thought to call her but dropped the idea feeling she might be sleeping and busied himself in getting ready. He was setting the knot of his tie when his phone rings his morning glows brighter than the sunlight had brightened' "Hey! Good morning!" '. "Hmn..Good morning!"..."you're sleepy"... "Hmn...Leaving?"... "Yes I's about to leave..you have your sleep...I'll call you later"... "It's okay!"... "No..It isn't...take your sleep..I'll call you later"..."promise!"' "Do you think I can resist calling you? Take care and sleep well"... "Bye...you take care too and drive carefully"...Ashutosh's eyes turn moist hearing her 'drive carefully''he wasn't used to hear the words of concern...he responds with an emotional "Bye".

Nidhi gets up at 8 in the morning after loitering sometime in two houses she gets ready for visiting a nearby temple with Dadi bua, she surprised Dadi Bua when she readily accepted her offer to accompany her to the temple. She cooked lunch for her family making her Dadi Bua to yell and scream in surprise and elation...She receives a few sms' from him informing her that the patient has developed some complications and he is busy...after lunch she goes out for shopping which kept her busy till evening..She was lying on her bed after her shopping expedition when she receives a call from him:

"So you resisted calling me"... "Please don't say so I've missed you badly"... "when are you leaving"' "I think in an hour...where are you? "' "at home but going out"... "out?" "hmn...Dr. Rangnath has invited us for a dinner"... "Okay! I'll call you later" he was feeling disappointed he thought he'll hurry and try to meet her he sighs looking at his phone.

Nidhi, Rohan Dr. Rangnath and Anji decided to have dinner in a restaurant that was in outskirts of lucknow, as the place was not crowded and food was good they thought they can also take pleasure of a long drive. It was seven in the evening when they were driving on a highway Nidhi made Rohan to stop the car to have a cup of coffee at nearby CCD outlet. Dr. Rangnath and Anji also stopped their car and offered to bring the coffee cup packs so that they can drive and enjoy coffee at the same time. Nidhi and Rohan were waiting for them enjoying the cool breeze when Nidhi's eyes caught a car stopped far away...she moved slowly to check the car and the person, to see if the person needs any help...Rohan tried to stop her yelling at her not to go there as the road was deserted and dark but she didn't stop...when she neared the car she was caught napping!!!
