Marriage vows assume a bigger role in the Indian context. This is because the concept of marriage is considered a sacred relation, lasting for a lifetime. Therefore the ritual of 'Sapta Padi' during an Indian marriage, where the bride and the groom exchange vows is crucial. The bride and the groom take seven pheras or steps around the holy homa making a promise to each other to stand by their seven vows forever.

These vows include the promise of respect, love, care, nurturing their children together and leading a healthy and peaceful life.

So, where does the question of modern marriage vows arise? Well, presently we are witnessing instances of divorce on the rise. Like Naitik from Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai explained to Akshara that Ajay and Jyothi were planning to break their marriage due to trivial problems. He told Akshara that both of them had already undergone such issues and yet were together. Indeed, Naitik had brought up a significant angle of their relationship. Further both of them confessed to each other that what is it then which is creating a distance between the two of them.

It is here that both of them realised that they weren't spending enough time with each other which was leading to misunderstandings and unwanted fights between them. Soon after they understood each other's shortcoming, Naitik and Akshara took the commendable step of repeating the 'Sapta Padi' ritual, this time with vows of their own.
