'I didn't know where my rent would come from'

Ronit Roy on the lows and highs of life

ROSHNI OLIVERA

Apart from his acting commitments, Ronit Roy these days is making time for his security guards business as well. That's something very close to his heart. After all he'd ventured into this at a time when he was going through the roughest phase of his life. "That was a tough period," he says.
Ronit entered Bollywood with Jaan Tere Naam in 1992, after which he did 12 to 13 films, but his career dipped thereafter. "I was quite naive then. After my first film did well, I thought I'd arrived. I didn't approach anybody. I didn't know how to go about things," he recounts.
That was a time when he struggled for a living. "I had reached a low where I didn't know where my rent was going to come from. I was literally counting the coins to get Rs 15 to Rs 20 to order a vegetable dish." But, even in that phase he always stayed calm. "I didn't panic. In life, I always take things as they come. Whatever happens you have to deal with it."
And then came the better phase when he got into television. Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus changed his life getting him the tag of the 'Big B of the small screen.' But as Ronit says, "I didn't get depressed during my low phase. So also I have never been ecstatic about the good phase. I'm just happy with the way my life is," he smiles.
