Mumbai: The Supreme Court has given actorSanjay Dutt another four weeks of freedom before returning to jail. The top court said the relief to Mr Dutt was granted on 'humanitarian grounds.'

The actor, who was convicted last month for illegally possessing weapons in a case linked to the 1993 blasts in Mumbai, was meant to return to prison by tomorrow. He had applied this week for six months before he began his prison sentence.

The supreme Court last month sentenced him to five years for possessing firearms supplied by men who executed the string of bombings in 1993 that killed 257 people in Mumbai.

Mr Dutt had already served 18 months of his sentence but was released on bail while his case was appealed. He now has to serve the remaining three-and-a-half-years of his term.

At an emotional press conference last month, he had said he would not appeal against his sentence.

Now in these 4 weeks, he can figure out more ways to extend his surrendering time or not having to serve any time. 👎🏼

I think it's so that he finishes his impending work in the movies he's part of else others will have to bear the brunt of his punishment too and face huge losses which isn't right tbh. Recently, Alert 24*7's work started too so I'm guessing it's this only.
But after this he should def. go to jail and complete his time period.

mr dutt was on religious tour where he was going to every possible temple for his "mannat" last few days ..i have nothing against touring temple or religious place but if he was so concerned abt others people loss he should have sticked to shooting rather than visitng religious places...he is just delaying as much he can for obvious reasons

1993 Mumbai blasts: SC dismisses plea of Zaibunnisa, others seeking extension of time to surrender

PTI | Apr 16, 2013, 12.03 PM IST

NEW DELHI: Three 1993 Mumbai blasts convicts' petitions for extension of time to surrender on the ground that their clemency pleas are pending before President Pranab Mukherjee, were on Tuesday dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Zaibunnisa Anwar Kazi (70), Issaq Mohd Hajwane (76) and Shariff Abdul Gafoor Parker (88) alias Dadabhai had moved the apex court seeking more time to surrender in order to undergo sentences awarded to them.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir rejected their petitions, saying extension of time to surrender cannot be given on the ground that clemency plea is pending before the President.

The apex court had on March 21 upheld the TADA court's verdict of five-year jail term to Kazi who is suffering from cancer.

It has enhanced to life imprisonment the five-year jail term awarded to Hajwane by the trial court. He spent five years in prison during the trial in the case.

The life sentence awarded by the TADA court to Parker was upheld by the apex court. He has already served over 14 years in jail.

Former Supreme Court judge and Press Council of India chief Markandey Katju had made a representation to the President on behalf of Kazi on March 18 and on behalf of the other two on April 10.

The writ petitions filed by them had pleaded that they they should not be asked to surrender till the representation made by Katju on their behalf is decided by the President.

The Mumbai serial blasts on March 12, 1993 had claimed 257 lives and injured over 700.
