I tend to take these SBB/SBS segments with a pinch of salt. They provide half-baked information and are very misleading. Like for example before the ME in MArch, there was this segment about Zoe "seducing" Asad and Asad rebuffing her. Nothing like that happened in the actual episode.

Even here, I am quite sure that quite a bit of background info has been left out. I am doubtful whether Asad has himself called off the engagement because of anger.

In the SBB segment - Asad did not look angry to me - he looked sad. Your first theory is probably closer to what could have happened...

Someone should ban these SBB/SBS people from the sets!
