Umm, sorry for sounding ignorant, but what exactly is new or novel about his marketing strategy?

Every team has an icon player, a theme song. The cheerleader idea is as old as professional teams. Every year the Lakers, the Dallas Cowboys and pretty much every professional team has a cheerleader event?

So again, what marketing genius?

He is a marketing genius, its all thanks to his education on buisness that too based on merits not mostly on parents money.

Even when his team didn't perform, his IPL team made more profit than the wining team. That says a lot about his involvement.
