Karan Wahi put his passion for cricket on hold to give acting a shot
Acting happened to me quite by chance. In 2003, I was a state-level cricketer and used to play for Delhi as an all-rounder. Cricket was a passion and I never thought of doing anything else other than play cricket. Then Lady Luck knocked at my door.
It all started with a phone call in 2004.
The gentleman who called me claimed to have seen my photographs on a social net- working site and wanted me to audition for a television show in Le Mridien hotel in Delhi. After much hesitation, I decided to give it a shot.
And to my surprise, I landed the part of Ranveer Sisodia in Remix, a serial which grew to become a popular show on Star One.
Over time, the character that I played became an extension of my personality and people began to identify me with Ranveer. I became an overnight star and loved every bit of my new-found stardom. I was bitten by the acting bug and this adulation further convinced me that I had to pursue films as a career.
Since I wanted to plunge into Bollywood, I stopped taking up offers for television shows for a while. Unfortunately, no substantial film roles came my way. Around this time, another of my shows, Mere Ghar Aayi Ek Nanhi Pari (2009) on Colors, flopped. People began to write me off as a one-show wonder.
Thankfully, Lady Luck smiled on me again and I got a call for Dill Mill Gayye, a medical drama in which I played the lead — Dr Siddhanth Modi. The soap proved to be a huge success and it catapulted me into limelight yet again. I was back with a bang.
One of the crucial turning points for me was getting to participate in the dance show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 5. On the sets, I met stalwarts including Karan Johar and Madhuri Dixit Nene, who applauded my talent each
time that I performed. Post Jhalak... I was bombarded by phone calls from filmmakers. I am still in talks with them and hopefully something will work out soon.
