Will stricter gun control laws ensure that guns won't reach people who are or could become mentally unstable?

Or should we consider the NRA's argument that mental health is the issue and not guns. If so, what changes should be done to the mental health system .. what can be done to make it is more accessible to people? How can you tell if your kid or a family member is mentally unstable? How do you determine whether your kid has a violent streak? What stops a parent from taking measures to proactively help their kid and protect innocent civilians?

It has to be a combination of both. Such issues do not have an easy one size fits all solutions. Several areas have to be addressed and looked at from a very non partisan way.
In a country where Google can figure out when you blink and when you breathe, I am sure, there are several ways to figure out mental helath issues, get the stigma associated to it removed and government help in those areas, along with media becoming more responsible and reporting news instead of reporting "stories". When news reporting becomes a ratings ruled program, then, that is when media gets to bend the truth.
I personally think, there should be gun control and greater and broder help in diagnosis and treatment and effective cure for mental health issues.

True.. people who want to kill will find a way to no matter what. But I guess the government has to make an effort to reduce crimes that were committed because a weapon was easily accessible or because their mental condition went unnoticed!

The problem is not only people with mental health issues with guns, it's perfectly sane, law abiding citizens who own firearms and have kids who would happily take their guns and commit mass murder.

Adam Lanza is one such case, but there are many others. I don't know if psych tests for those who want to own a gun or renew their firearms licence would eek these people out. It's not going to be considered 'constitutional' if people submit their children for these kinds of tests so that the parents can own firearms. This is where parents come in. It is their responsibility to to do something if their child looks like it's going to go on a shooting rampage.

I know no one wants to think that their child is a danger to society or themselves, but in Adam Lanza's case there were signs and the parents ignored them...It's a tough one.

Not being able to buy ammunition so easily online would help too. Will any of these gun control measures for ordinary civilians crack down on criminals who have many illegally procured firearms?

But if they make it hard to buy firearms and need to undergo psych evaluation.. what about people who want to own for self-defense .. and quickly..

As for children, it annoys me to the core when people laugh off wrong things their kids do saying its cute.. a cousin's son destroyed the TV at his grandparents' house .. and everyone thought it was cute.. and I was like instead of scolding the kid for doing that, they thought it was cute?? Even the parents didn't scold the kid.. no one scolded the damn kid .. Why? Sure it was a TV.. I am not saying one day he will pick up a gun, but shouldn't parents be more careful the way they bring up their kid.. shouldn't they be stricter with their kids?? I think no sign should be ignored. It's like a disease.. if you can spot Asperger's and treat it.. you should spot other signs too.. and try to treat it.. you never know the kid could harm himself or you..

It is a combination of both.

I think mandatory background checks and banning of automatic assault rifles are a pragmatic step towards safety.

But in the end guns don't kill people, people do. Switzerland has the worlds highest guns per capita and some of the most lax gun laws in the world. But you rarely hear about gun violence in Switzerland. Even Canada is more libertarian when it comes to gun ownership, but they too have less gun violence than us. Guns are not really the problems in USA. Our bigger problem is our population on Prozac and Paxil and the likes.
