They can talk about being 'ex', but it's meaningless even for them when they get pushed past wordplay.
Madhu was careful to be factual in her TV-interview. "We *were* (*did get*) married. We used to live as husband and wife, but we are now living separated."
She does not go melodramatic there and make any claims about the marriage being over, because it would be a legal misstatement.
Even now, when she says that RK is not her husband, she avoids any legal terms.
They have both been content to leave this situation midway. They can say 'ex' but can still hold onto the other.
