^^ Lets not be too hasty in thinking that the suicide was a result of any remorse felt by the main accused. It could very well have been the result of cowardice, inability to tolerate the harsh treatmet meted out to him by the other jail inmates. From a report I had read much earlier, the inmates seem to have their own code of conduct and justice delivery! The rapists occupy the ranks of most despicable followed by murderers. The juvenile too had been subjected to violence from the inmates of the "juvenile reormatory homes" and had to be shifted thrice to alternate places for his safety. Whatever, it is another example of the inefficiency on part of the law keepers.

when the society and its citizens are aloof at large then why govt. will felt anything.

The rapist got panishment?!?! Govt. passed any new law or new amendment in our leagal system for these all delaying tactics ?!... When there are criminals and rapists as law breakers then why the hell does the government and opposition look for a consensus. Didnt they hear public opinion loud and clear?!?!

Law will have to take its course Vinu. The cases cant be decided on public opinion. Though it seems to be a clear case it could very well go on for at least a year or two . After all, it took quite some time to hang a terrorist who gunned down people in broad daylight with thousands of eye witnesses!

Delhi rape case not unique, says CJI

Chief Justice of India Justice Altamas Kabir on Saturday said that the Delhi gang-rape incident on December 13 was not "unique," but one among many.

Nirbhaya's case was one amongst many and yet it assumed iconic status . Why? Worth pondering over!

For some reason it was the case that galvanized a complacent nation into an outrage. Could it have something to do with the fact the moral brigade in the country did not find much to fault her for that brutal incident? She was on her way back at an acceptable time of 8.30 PM, decently dressed on a wintry evening, accompanied by a male escort. The escort seemed to be a well built decent guy who tried his best to protect her till he was overpowered by six men in the bus they boarded.

Could it be the fact that the girl was a student and a brave one at that, made it easy for the vast student population in the capital feel a sense of solidarity?

Or could it be the fact that the brutality of the crime that was aptly highlighted by the media took the young gen by storm? They had put up with enough already and this case proved to be like the proverbial last straw . Winter vacation was close by and the students gathered in huge numbers at India gate and Raisina hill. The media saw the potential and played it to the hilt.

Could the stupid and insensitive comments that followed by several "leaders", the Indian President's own son included plus the police lathi charge and water cannons in the Delhi winter have further inflamed the situation?

Or does it have to do with the fact that the girl, her friend, parents all of them faced the situation in an exemplary manner instead of the usual shunning the media for family honour excuse that most people generally indulge in.

All of these reasons combined could have contributed to the case acquiring an iconic status. Or perhaps it's the spirit of Nirbhaya that is reflecting and fighting it out through a whole nation!

(Here;s a protestor in Delhi giving her reasons - https://in.lifestyle.yahoo.com/let-s-talk-about-it--why-i-joined-the-delhi-gang-rape-protest-181155525.html)
