Gayatri understands Yash alright. It's just that she is at the moment so overwhelmed with love for a long-lost son that she is not thinking straight. She thinks she has to prove to Aakash that she loves him and has accepted him...but she does not have to prove anything to Yash cause Yash knows he has her love. It's only when she takes sides and is about to lose Yash because of her favoritism that she will awaken to her folly.
