Do audiences confuse characters w/ performance?

I was just thinking, that our Indian audiences measure how good an actor is by how much they like a character they play.

For instance:

Kareena may have performed better and in a more challenging role in movies like Chameli, Dev, Kurbaan, but it will always be Geet Dhillon that people associate with her best performance.

Kajol may have given a more electrifying performance in Dushman or Gupt, but people will always call Anjali of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai her best.

Shahrukh's more revered performances arent really the ones he performed the best in IMO.
Chak De India, Swades, Asoka, and the many shaded characters he did at the start of his career get over shadowed by the Raj & Rahuls he played in KKHH, K3G, DDLJ

Salman's performance as Chulbul is loved more than his restrained performance in Phir Milenge or more layered performance in Tere Naam.

What do you guys think?
I mean to say that if you ask a general audience which was an actor's best performance, they would most likely choose an endearing character over a performance that was better, but not the character itself.
Do you have other examples to either support this or maybe disprove it?

well..not me!
I m a priyanka fan..her best performance was in 7 khoon maaf...that was SOME performance...n even fashion n then barfi! but i like her character in dostana a lot ..coz she looks so good n hot in it..but i wont call that her best performance!
Contrary to popular theory..i m a huge fan of SRK from his darr, baazigar , chamatkar n raju ban gaya gentleman days ...but he killed the fan in me with those rajs n rahuls he has been playin since then!😭😭 i miss the old raw SRK!! i would rate his Raj Ban gaya Gentleman n Yes Boss as the best performances! they were sooo real!!
Salman..well..i m not his fan..but the only time i liked him was in phir milenge😊! n i till date havent seen those dabang series coz i ..well..cant stand that brand of cinema!
I m a Aamir kHan Fan ...but i m trying to think hard which is his best performance n for me ...all r equal!!⭐️
n look at hrithik,...i m his die hard fan...even though he looked sooo cool in KNPH ..i still feel his best performance was in Fiza..where he actually played a terrorist!!
So ...maybe i m different n dont think like the majority..but for me there is a clear distinction between the character n the performace!!
as for bebo darling ...well...the character of Geet is one of the most unique characters created in indian cinema...in a world where women were either virtous or vampish..n nothing in between...hers was a complete..full of life n a very multi -dimensional character..n a loud one at that!! so its coz of that... kareena will always be associated with Geet..coz the character is unforgettable n kareena played it well too!! both the character n the actor suited each other to a T!!

Yes they do.
At the end of the day it is all about entertainment.
Audiences want entertainment.
No matter how good the performance is if the character is not entertaining then audiences will never remember the performance.
Even an average performer can strike gold if the character he/she playing is well written.

Nice post Desi!

I agree with you to an extent, yes viewers do tend to get confused with performance of an actor to a character at times. If the character appeals to the audience, they relate the actor through the character. Besides not every good character is portrayed flawlessly by the performer since majority of movies have feel good, noble characters

There are also instances where people relate to the actor for their stardom more than their performance or characters in movies

yep..i think SRK is an exception...where ppl like him both offscreen and onscreen...

if u think about it..ppl don see stars in real life...so confuse characters with actors.....ind therefor whichever character they think the actor is more acceptable in..waaalaa...ppl like SRK in romantic roles...Anushka/Parineeti in bubbly roles...if u know wht i mean...thy recognise the chracter in which thy feel teh actor is more "suitable" in..i think ppl will alwys rememebr Kareena for her role in Jab we Met...whereas filmwalas liker in Chameli..

also...masses (which represents indian audience mainly.). r too naiive to diitinguish between actors and characters...

The kids do yeah! And some others as well.
When an actor gets stereotyped, especially then.
For example Emraan Hashmi. Majority consider him to be a pervert in real lifeas well and dislike him. Whereas the reality is something different.
And this misconception generally exists which is exactly why actors refuse to do roles which they think can affect their image, the gay roles being the foremost.

yeh i do tht a lot...i think its got to do with crowd pleasing...the characters which are more "out there" with one liners, punches n stuff, are more vibrant and charismatic will be better remembered because thts wht draws attention from the crowd...

applies to character actors too..

arshad gave a gr8 performance in ishqiya but hes always munna's sidekick circuit...

paresh rawal gave wonderful performances in varied roles (comedy, villainous ones) but ppl remember him as Baburao from Hera pheri...

Amrish puri was brilliant in viraasat n stuff, but ppl will always remember him as Mogambo...

Manoj bajpai is a pretty good actor and has done some credible work but ppl know him as "bhiku matre" from satya...

why even rajnikanth is infact a brilliant actor as seen from his work in the first 10 years of his career, but ppl love him for his punch lines, and OTT stuff so thts wht hes known for...

i think the bottom line is, a character which plays to the galleries etches itself better in the memory...
