The Ghosts that Haunt Us
CHAPTER 1
" Let Go of Me!"
"Hold Her Down, Hold her Down!"
"No, please, I'll do anything, please..."
"Hold her down DAMMIT!"
"Let Go of Me...please"
"Hold her dow...Aaargh!"
"MANNU!"
Ganga woke up with a start, drenched in her own sweat, shivering. For a minute she stared into the darkness surrounding her and then fell back into her bed with a sigh
She was safe. She was safe in her own room situated in a corner of a hostel belonging to one of the safest campuses in the country. Safe. The word felt so foreign
Probably because even here she was plagued by the memories she kept trying to run from, she thought bitterly. It had been 6 yrs since all that happened and even now she couldn't pass a single night without reliving it in her dreams. She shifted in the small narrow bed trying to block the memories which were flooding her brain hard and fast
You are safe, You are safe, You are safe she chanted trying to blank her mind, the way the therapist had told her to. She wasn't too surprised when it didn't work. After all the guy hadn't seemed exactly competent what with his habit of falling asleep in the middle of their sessions and the suspicious looking bottle that he kept taking swigs from
She sighed and slowly swung herself out of the bed. It was pretty obvious that she wasn't going to get any sleep now . Besides the sun was already up and rising. She went towards the window and took her first glance of the place she was to call "home" for the next 4 years
A vast green expanse met her eyes. Small grey roads crisscrossed their way through it lined by enormously tall trees whose branches tangled above forming a roof over the paths. At the far end she could see numerous white buildings dotting the green. The central building had a huge dome shaped roof which was at present scattering the sun's rays falling on it on to the green grass where it sparkled as it hit the early morning dew
It was beautiful, Ganga thought awed by the scene in front of her. For the 100th time she realized how incredibly lucky she had been to get a scholarship here, though this time the realization was more intense . With a ripple of excitement she hurried back into the small room to get ready for the day. She didn't want to be late on her first day as an intern in St. Thomas Medical School, India's biggest University and premier institute for Medical and Life Sciences
