It was half past seven at night and Health Care Hospital was buzzing with activity. The hospital was the brain child of Arvind Raizada and his wife, Savithri Raizada who were doctors. They were also the proud owners of one of the prestigious medical colleges in Delhi. They helped youngsters who had the urge to study but did not have the financial strength to support them. Most of the good things come to an end sooner than we expect. Unfortunately, Arvind Raizada and his wife passed away in an accident.
Their son, Arnav Singh Raizada, followed their footsteps and studied medicine. He was one of the board of directors for both the hospital and the college. Even though he wasn't present in most of the meetings, his presence was always felt. One small wrong move on anyone's part and he would know about it. He loved and respected his parents so much that he would not tolerate any sort of mistake, however small it might be.
A door with the name board Dr. Arnav S. Raizada, Paediatrician, opened and the man himself stepped out of the room with two kids in his arms. The two kids, a little girl in a red frock and a boy in a white t-shirt and blue jeans, were giggling. Even though they weren't identical, the resemblance was there which told everyone looking at them that they were twins.
A woman, in her late twenties, got up when she saw them.
"How are they, doctor?" she asked him.
The two kids looked at him. He shook his head.
"Mumma, Arnav Uncle is very nice. He didn't give injections," the little boy told his mother.
"Haan, Mumma," the little girl said. "Uncle bahut achche hain. [Uncle is very good.] He even showed us how to use a stescop...."
Arnav went to her rescue.
"Stethescope," he taught her, pronouncing every syllable.
The girl smiled and pronounced the word. "Stethscope."
"Very good," Arnav congratulated her.
He walked to a nearby chair and let them stand on it. The girl took the stethoscope from Arnav's neck and put it in her ears. She asked her mother to come closer and she pressed it on her mom's chest. Her eyes widened when she heard her mother's heartbeat.
"Mumma, aap ki heartbeat sun raha hoon," she said in her sweet innocent voice. [Mumma, I am listening to your heartbeat.]
The woman kissed her daughter's cheek and said, "Uncle ko unki steth wapas dedho." [Give the steth back to Uncle.]
She did as she was told and got down from the chair. The boy jumped from the chair and caught his mother's hand.
The girl asked Arnav to bend down and he complied. When he bent to their heights, both the kids kissed him on either of his cheeks.
"Bye, Uncle," they told him.
Aman Mehra, a cardiologist, had finished the post operation check up for a patient and was on his way to meet his friend, Arnav. He turned around the corner and saw the happy scene in front of him.
The kids bid goodbye and left.
Both Arnav and Aman looked exhausted after the day's work. They greeted each other with a hug.
"Long day, huh?" Arnav asked Aman.
He nodded and said, "Very long."
"I'll grab my coat and come. We'll leave."
Aman looked at the latest addition in his table. It was a digital photo frame. He switched it on and looked at the photos while Arnav removed his white coat and put on his black suit.
"When did you buy this?" Aman asked him.
"Jiju brought it yesterday. The photos were Adi's work."
"You should accept, Arnav. Adi knows you very well. All your favourite photos are here."
Before Arnav was able to reply, the door opened and Lavanya entered in her skimpy clothes. Arnav groaned inwardly. She was a model but it did not mean that she had to wear those type of really, really short clothes everywhere.
"Hey ASR!" she hugged him and kissed his cheek. "You missed me?"
Aman rolled his eyes.
Before Arnav could answer, she said, "You know, ASR, I had a photo shoot today. It was just awesome. Payal's new designs are out of the world."
She stopped for a second and searched his coat pocket for his wallet.
Arnav grabbed her hand and asked, "Kya kar rahi ho?" [What are you doing?]
"Simple. Tumari wallet doond rahi hoon." [Simple. I am searching for your wallet.]
"Why do you want my wallet?"
"ASR, mujhe tumari credit card chahiye. Isliye wallet doond rahi hoon." [ASR, I want your credit card. That is why I am searching for your wallet.]
"Wait, I'll get it for you."
He took out his wallet from his coat pocket and pulled out a card. She plucked it from him before he gave it to her.
"Woh kya hai na, main ek bahut khoobsurat party wear dekhi thi. [You know, I saw a beautiful party wear.] I wanted to buy it. That's why. And the shop...."
Aman interrupted her. "And the shop said it would accept only Arnav's credit cards. That's why you came to rob money from my friend."
Lavanya gave him a dirty look.
Arnav glared at him and said, "Aman, wait in the parking lot. I'll be there in a few minutes."
Aman grumbled and left the room.
After Aman left, she turned to her same old self again.
She kissed his cheek again and said, "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye, Lavanya."
He looked at her retreating figure and took a deep breath. Before he switched off the lights, his eyes fell on the calendar. He scolded himself for forgetting Akash's son, Ankit's birthday. He grabbed his car keys from the table and went to the parking lot where a fuming Aman waited for him.
One look at Aman's face told him that he would receive silent treatment until he did something to improve his friend's mood.
"Aman, ankit ka birthday hai. Uss ke liye kuch kareedhna hai. Want to come to the toy store with me?" [Aman, it is Ankit's birthday. I have to get him something. Want to come to the toy store with me?]
"Okay."
When they were on their way to the toy store, Arnav asked, "Aman, for how long will you be showing me this attitude of yours?"
He gave Arnav an 'I-don't-believe-this' look and said, "Attitude and me?"
"Listen, I know that you don't like Lavanya. Why should you state it every time you see her?"
"Who am I to hate her? It is my friend who should hate her for the stupid character."
"Are we really having this conversation again?" Arnav groaned.
He crossed his arms and said, "You know what, Arnav? I am done. I am done with you and your crazy relationship with her."
Arnav stopped his car in front of the toy store and asked, "What's wrong, Aman?"
"Tum sach mein pooch rahe ho ki what's wrong? [Are you really asking me what's wrong?] Unbelievable, man." He paused for a second and said, "Everytime... Every single time you break up with someone, I would feel like scolding you. It would be as though you let someone slip through your fingers. And then.... Bang.... You find Lavanya. For the first time, I feel like killing you for not breaking up with her." He shook his head and said, "You believe that? Your friend wants you to have a break up."
Arnav placed his hand on his friend's shoulder and said, "Aman, I can understand. The only thing in Lavanya's mind is money. She is with me because I have lots of money and my siblings own a fashion house. She can use my name and di and Akash would give her first preference even if they don't like her. I know, Aman."
"They why, Arnav? Why are you still with her? You have never answered me this question. Give me one today and I will never ask you such questions again." After a small pause, he said, "But I will not stop pestering you to move away from her."
He leaned his head on the seat's head rest and said, "She is with me as she wants my money and the advantage my connections can give her. That is the exact reason why I am with her."
"Main samjhi nahi." [I don't understand.]
"She doesn't expect a personal space in my life, Aman. She just wants to tag along with me in public. As far as she doesn't invade my personal space...."
"You are not a person who will shy away from long term commitments," Aman interrupted him.
"Exactly. I want long term commitments. The previous girls in my life wanted to be a part of my life for a while and then they wanted to vanish. I am not ready for that sort of a relationship. When I see the symptoms of a live in relationship, I take the first step towards a mutual split."
"What do you actually want, Arnav?"
"I want what my parents had. I want what di and jiju share. I want what Akash and Payal enjoy."
"Why don't you tell di that you want to get married and settle down?"
"Remember what happened last time when di brought a girl home."
Both of them knew very well what had happened the first and only time, di brought someone home with the prospect of Arnav's marriage. The girl talked about nothing but a future collaboration between her fashion magazine and their fashion house. It had irritated Arnav so much that he had asked her to get out of his house.
The memory brought a smile to their lips.
They got down from the car and walked in.
"Saare ladkhiyan yeise nahi hai, Arnav." [All the girls are not like that, Arnav.]
"Aur saare ladkhiyan Shreya jaisa achchi bhi nahi hai. Even a small coin has two sides. Hume bas sahi side dhoondna hoga." [And not all girls are like Shreya. Even a small coin has two sides. We just have to search for the right side.]
An involuntary smile lit Aman's face when he heard the name Shreya.
There were a lot of girls in the store and Aman pointed at one person or the other.
He showed him one in a jeans and shirt and asked, "What do you think of her?"
"I think you have to stop."
He raised his hand in acceptance and said, "Okay. Okay. How about that one in the puzzle section?"
Arnav glared at him.
"Just look at her, man. Last one."
He didn't turn.
"Gentleman agreement. Last one. You have one look at her and I will stop."
"Last."
Arnav turned around to see the person Aman pointed at.
It was someone in a white salwar. The white colour made her look like an angel. She had a couple of boxes in her hand and she flipped it around to see what was written on the back.
Arnav stared at her without blinking. The girl in white looked around and finally went to an old man who wore the toy store's uniform. He looked at the way she moved her hands when she spoke with him. Her eyes and her actions spoke more than the words which actually came out of her mouth.
Her eyes oozed of innocence and genuineness. They created havoc in his heart. He had never seen someone like her before. Aman was right. She would be the last one. There would never be anyone after her. Her image was etched in his heart.
Suddenly he felt someone pulling his hand and calling out for him.
"Earth calling Arnav! Earth calling Arnav! Please report to base. I repeat, Arnav, please report to base."
"Hmm...." He didn't understand what was happening around him.
"Kahaan kho gaye ho?" Aman asked him with a teasing smile. [Where are you lost?]
Only then he realized that he had been staring at the girl in white for a long time. He looked in the same direction again. She wasn't there. He shook her head to clear his thoughts.
"Nothing. Main bas soch raha tha?" [Nothing. I was just thinking.]
"Kya?" [What?]
"Kuch nahi. [Nothing.] Come on. Let's get a gift for Ankit."
