Akshay Kumar Missing The Back-2-Back 100 Crore Box Office Club

February 25th, 2013 by Rachna Srivastava

The new dimension given to the Indian Box Office is the concept of the tantalizing and magnanimous "100 Crore Club" which is now sought as the most esteemed and prestigious benchmark for the films bombarding at the Indian Box Office. And the race is on to make it to the tableau at the fastest pace.

Even though Khiladi Kumar is a superstar not missing out from the league in which Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan,Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn fall, yet it seems that Akshay Kumar is having tough times in keeping the exclusive membership of the 100 crore club in the active phase. Akshay started 2012 with a bang, with Housefull 2 grossing 114 crores. Following this was Rowdy Rathore which collected 131 crores in 11 days, which created ripples in the tinsel town brand camps.

But Akshay's last two flicks Khiladi 786 and OMG Oh My God! collected around 70 crores and 81 crores respectively at the box-office; though OMG Oh My God! was more of aParesh Rawal flick rather being Akshay's, yet it missed the 100 crore waypost despite the affirmative reviews and strong storyline. Khiladi 786 was an entertainer yet the milestone was not surpassed and it was labeled an average fare. De novo, we see Special Chabbis (26) which has withstood a slow start and is lingering on after being compassed upon hearsay and parol, seems to breeze through at the box office. The movie is still running in cinemas but has received setbacks of late, reason being the release of Kai Po Che!, which is going real strong at the B.O and garnering attention hence in turn sidelining Special Chabbis (26).

But if we look at the bigger picture we can paint that others of the likes Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir and Ajay deliver a 100 crore flick as a piece of cake and with full ease without much ado. But such is not the case with Akshay.

Mr.Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, is the man who started the whole galore with Ghajni which grossly collected 114 crores and opened the doors of the 100 Crore Club. He then with 3 Idiots sidelined the 100 crore concept and brought into frame the 200 crore benchmark. Sadly, Aamir missed the mark with Talaash, but seems to dash in soon with Dhoom:3.

Ajay Devgn's Golmaal 3, Singham, Bol Bachchan and Son Of Sardaar made it to the list in a snap. And withHimmatwala looking as a promising entrant, Ajay might add another feather to his hat.

Shah Rukh Khan too holds the aristocratic membership with Ra.One, Don 2 and Jab Tak Hai Jaan which garnered 100 crores in 11 days if taken averagely. And his next Chennai Express is also viewed on the lines of expectancy to make it to the tally soon enough.

Now the unquestionable reigning king of the 100 crore club is our Dabangg Salman Khan, who has the maximum number of films in the category back to back. The saga started with Dabangg, following whichBodyguard, Ready, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 made to the tabulation. Dabangg 2 and Ek Tha Tiger made it to the list in the first six days of release, tagging them on being the fastest films to reach the 100 crore mark.

So we see some making it to the exclusive club with a snap and as a duck soup, and our Khiladi Kumar has gone missing from the kinship with his last three cines. We wonder what can possibly be the reason for such backslide with Akki's movies.

To note here as pointers; not that all the movies which made it to the coterie had great story content or had wondrous acting on the upfront. What can possibly be the bounds that Akshay Kumar, who is in the Superstar league of B-Wood is missing from the action, whereas others turkey shoot and cinch to the confederation of the 100 crore club?

Is it sheer luck that comes into foreplay? Or is it acting? Or is it the stardom? Or is it the dedicated fanbase's adamancy to make their favourite star's film an entrant to the 100 crore guild?

We speculate as to why be it so with our Khiladi Kumar that his films are not making it to the club, but of others of the same league he comes from are bombarding the B.O with their collections.

He hasnt lost his charm, its just too many releases. im sure if he carefully planned one release on holidays every year like srk and salman, he would come pretty close to the 100 cr club everytime if not cross it

OMG and Special 26 are better films than any of the 100crore films so it doesnt even matter!! I rather see him in such films than 100 crore ones! honestly the 100 crore club is so overrated... who cares if it's not back to back!

It is important to give the movies with substance even though they may not make a 100 cr...Special 26 and OMG are anyday better than Housefull 2 and RR which made 100 cr...
