Kripa put her pager in the locker and pulled out her phone, checking the time. 8:42 PM. In about 15 minutes, Sahil would be closing down. She quickly grabbed her jacket and took off, not bothering to wait for Riddhima who most probably had a night shift. As she stepped out, she groaned finding herself standing in falling snow. She quickly ran across the street and into Starbucks where Sahil was on the phone with someone. She knocked the counter to get his attention and he automatically hung up the phone upon spotting her.
"Hey Kripa!" He exclaimed grinning.
"Closing down? Thought we'd walk home together." She said smiling at him. He nodded pulling out a birthday pop and handing it over to her with a grin. She took it biting in. Just as he took his hat off and grabbed his jacket, Madhu and Khushi walked out from the back.
"Kripa! Hey. How are you? Waiting for Sahil?" Khushi asked fixing her hair. Kripa merely nodded. "Sahil, go. Madhu & I will lock up." She turned and winked at Kripa just as Sahil's back was facing them. Kripa turned a beet red and shot her a glare.
"Let me grab my shirt from the back." Sahil said to Kripa before walking away. As Madhu and Khushi started talking about the coffee shop, Kripa's phone rang. She pulled it out and found Private Number flashing across the screen. Confused, she pressed accept and put the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" She said. Silence. What the hell? Kripa thought pulling the phone away to check if the other person was still on the line. "Hello? Are you going to speak or not?" Kripa snapped. Silence. She sighed and finally, hung up not choosing to bother herself over some idiot. But she had never gotten a blank call before. What the hell is going on these days? She bit her lip and watched Sahil walk up to her pulling his jacket on.
"Let's go." He said gently putting his hand on her shoulder. She slowly walked forward, still lost in her thoughts, confused about everything that had taken place. She snapped out of her reverie when Sahil nudged her shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Everything has been so weird the past few weeks. First the sounds I heard outside my house in the middle of the night.. And then last night, I went out of the club for some fresh air and someone was behind me. At first, I had thought it was probably someone out for fresh air like me but they started following me. And then they just.. disappeared. And now, a couple minutes ago, I got a blank call from someone." Kripa mumbled rubbing her forehead breathing in and out slowly.
"You have the number don't you? Report it to the police if you feel somethings not right." Sahil suggested stuffing his hands into his pockets.
"I don't have the number. It came as a Private Number." She mumbled scrolling through her phone to double check. Sahil checked over her shoulder and saw the same. Private Number.
"It was probably some teenager playing a prank on you." He laughed shaking his head. Kripa sighed putting the phone back in her pocket.
"I suppose. I'm so tired of all the crap that's been happening." She replied twirling a strand of her hair nervously. He nudged her shoulder grinning.
"You're such a worry wart. Loosen up a little Sharma." He laughed.
"Fine Kapoor." She giggled nudging him right back. He ran a hand through his messy hair and looked up at the sky, at the falling snow.
"I've always liked the snow." He said holding out a hand for a snowflake. Kripa shuddered kicking some snow out of her way.
"Hate it." She spat out venomously causing Sahil to laugh at her. "What's your favourite colour?"
"Black." He replied.
"Favourite movie?"
"Uh, 21 Jump Street at the moment." Kripa just looked at him and gave him a look.
"So much violence." She gasped. He laughed shrugging.
"I like action movies. You can call it violence. I call it action." He said winking at her rubbing his arm absentmindedly. He does that a lot, as if it's a habit. She thought smiling at him gently.
"Favourite book?" She asked.
"What is this, 20 questions?" He chuckled staring up at the sky again. "But to answer your question, I don't read books."
"20 questions doesn't go like that. I just like hearing about people." Kripa rolled her eyes extending her foot to skip over some ice.
"Ah, but you talk too much for people to tell you about them." He said with a serious expression on his face. Her mouth dropped open and she leaned down grabbing a handful of snow. He gave her a warning look which she ignored and threw the snowball right at his face. Laughing, she ran away from him and he grinned, chasing her. Unfortunately for her, she slipped on a patch of ice and fell right into Sahil causing them to fall into a pile of snow on someone's lawn. She turned to face him and watched him lay beside her staring up at the sky.
"My mom was really talkative. She said it was good to talk. Especially when you're upset or stressed about something." Kripa whispered staring at the sky along with him. She was so busy remembering the time she spent with her mother that she didn't notice him turn and look at her for a good 2 minutes. She turned to look at him surprised when he gently touched her cheek.
"What else did your mom say to you?" He asked her propping his head up with his elbow, staring at her. She smiled staring into his beautiful light brown eyes.
"No one's ever wanted to just, listen to me talk. I've always listened to others. It feels nice to just talk about anything and everything." She confessed. "Why are you so interested in knowing so much about me?" He grinned biting the inside of his cheek.
"I just like hearing about people." He teased standing up, cleaning snow off his jeans. He held out his hand for her, to help her up. She took it and smiled at the way he grabbed it tightly, his hands rough and strong. More like hands of someone who was used to holding weapons than coffee cups. There was something very mysterious and secretive about him and she for some reason, really liked it. She turned to look forward and realized they had arrived at her house.
"Well," she mumbled. "Goodnight then." He nodded rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. For a moment, he just stared at her and then hesitating, he leaned over and pecked her cheek. Transfixed, she watched him turn around and walk away with her hand on her cheek in a dream like state.
