About colors being a paid channel...

Most of India opt for set top boxes offered by the cable guys...they are cheaper and have all GEC channels by default. Which means that colors is available too. The monthly charges are the same as one would have paid for cable..Rs 100 per month.

This means your set top box will also have many channels you don't watch and still pay for it but it won't hit your pocket too much. Ultimately, it comes to choice...you have the channel but you choose not to watch it.

For eg: My mom watches only two channels on her TV, But she still pays for all the others.

As for DTH boxes like Dish, Tata Sky, Airtel etc...these are hugely expensive and not everyone opts for it..at least not the aam junta in India. These boxes are very expensive and so are the monthly cost...anything between Rs 300-1000 per month depending on the packages you opt for...here, the GEC don't come as a default. One has to opt for a package which has the channel of your choice.

So, one can imagine which option the general public would take...the point is, the channel is availble in general but people may not choose to see it.
