Jeetendra to play Thakur in daughter Ekta Kapoor's Bhojpuri version of Sholay

Although Jeetendra is not working in too many films, his daughter Ekta Kapoor and son Tusshar Kapoor have their way of making him work. This is perhaps the reason why Jeetendra often acts in his daughter's films and television serials.

This time, Jeetendra returns to work in Ekta's Bhojpuri production Gabbar Singh. He will play the role of Thakur that was earlier played by Sanjeev Kumar in Ramesh Sippy's Sholay and is being played by Mohanlal in Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay.

A pleased Ekta says, "So far my director Mahesh Pandey has only decided that my father will play Thakur in the film. He wants to announce the other cast members as and when they are decided. Gabbar's character is the most important casting."

Apparently, Pandey has decided that Nana Patekar will play the title role? "My lips are sealed," laughs Ekta. "All I want to say right now is that my film is a very different interpretation of Sholay as we have known it. It is unlike Ramesh Sippy's and Ramu's Sholay."

Ekta also intends to let Mahesh Pandey have a free hand while directing the film. "I'm only financially involved with Gabbar Singh. All the creative decisions will be taken by Mahesh. He plans to change the story and characters completely."

Is she trying to compete with Ramu's Sholay? "No way!" says Ekta. "Gabbar Singh is targetted at the Bhojpuri market. Even I'd want to go and see Ramu's Sholay before seeing my own Bhojpuri film Gabbar Singh," says Ekta.

Jeetendra
Television czarina Ekta Kapoor, who is remaking a Bhojpuri version of Sholay under the title Gabbar Singh, has asked daddy Jeetendra to play Thakur.

The idea of roping in the yesteryear actor was the brainchild of Mahesh Pandey, who is producing the film with Ekta and Shobha Kapoor.

Mahesh says, "I wanted someone who was not only physically fit but also a big name to play Thakur. I couldn't think beyond Jeetuji."

Pandey says that Jeetendra agreed quite easily. All he said was, 'If Ekta has no problem, I have no problem'. Ekta confirms her father's inclusion in the film, saying, "Mahesh has fleshed out Thakur's character very well. I am very kicked about this idea."

Bhojpuri galore

Mahesh Pandey has written many Balaji's shows, including Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay.

Mahesh is also directing the film, and runs down the early reports that Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kissen and Nagma will star in his film. "We have signed Ravi, but he'll be doing a different film with us. The call on that has not been taken yet. But Nagma is not doing Gabbar Singh for sure."

The film will go on floors in February 2007. Most of the shooting will take place in Banaras.

ok, so lemme guess: Jeetuji will play Thakur, Tusshar will be Veeru, Eijaz will be Jai, and Ekta will play the new-age Gabbar.
